WAYS TO SUPPORT OUR HOSTS’ MINISTRIES

In addition to the $6 cost of each meal, the presbytery collects a Hunger Offering at every stated meeting. One half is sent to the Presbyterian Hunger Fund while the other half goes to a hunger ministry of the host’s choosing. Please give generously as you register.

We also encourage you to bring an item to the meeting to support a designated ministry. See more information inside this packet about both these initiatives that support God’s work through the host organization.

PRINCIPLES OF PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE

Courtesy to all - One item at a time - Majority rule Respect the rights of the minority - Justice for all - Partiality for none

“For us as Presbyterians, parliamentary law is a tool we use which is a servant to our theological understanding of the purpose of a governing body: to seek God’s will for our actions in the world, as we witness to our faith in Jesus Christ.”

- from “Parliamentary Procedures in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)”by Marianne L. Wolfe.

Southminster Presbyterian Church (SPC) was founded in 1956 and has worshipped at its current location since March of 1959. In 2018, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Easter Sunday dedication of our Sanctuary and the installation of our beautiful faceted glass window in the Narthex.

Beginning with sixty-three charter members, membership peaked in 1975 at one thousand five hundred and eighteen members. Current membership is four hundred and sixteen.

In October 2017, Rev. Dr. Nancy Birdsong was called as SPC’s sixth Head of Staff and the first woman to hold the position. Prior to Dr. Birdsong’s appointment, SPC was served by Dr. Fred McClellan (1960–1972), Dr. Allen Foster (1973–1984), Dr. Robert Smith (1985–1996), Rev. David Jongewaard (1998–2004), and Rev. Eric Pasanchin (2007-2015), and Interim Pastor, Steve Plunkett. In addition, SPC has benefitted from the service of a number of Associate Pastors over the years including Rev. Paul Masquelier, Jr. (1965), Rev. Donald Crank (1970), Rev. Mark Thomas (1980), Rev. John Warner (1987), Rev. Mark Greiner (1992), Rev. Faith Jongewaard (1998), Rev. Sue Hamilton (2007), Rev. Megan Collins (2008) and Rev. Jackie Nowak (2010). Rev. Steve Schumm currently serves the church as interim associate pastor.

SPC is situated in a highly visible location in the community and, at night, the symbols in our illuminated, faceted glass window “tell the story of the church” – the burning bush (a symbol of both our Scottish heritage and the call of Moses), the Celtic cross (symbolizing eternal life, Christian discipleship, and witness to the community), and the Calvin seal (a symbol not only of the early Reformed leader but also the proffering of the heart, alight with the power and spirit of God).

Our Vision is “To be the head, heart and hands of Jesus Christ, driven by God’s love for our church and the world beyond.” We are a mission-oriented church community that embraces learning, fellowship, worship, and inclusiveness, welcoming everyone. Our recent mission work has included parking lot house frame builds for Habitat for Humanity, which are now collaborative efforts with Catch the Building Spirit. Most recently, the church initiated “The Church has Left the Building,” sending teams out into the community or to work in-house on projects for underserved and needy populations at home and abroad. Future plans include mission trips and expanding community service.

TWO WAYS TO SERVE! HUNGER OFFERING

The Presbytery continues to collect a financial offering, received at the meeting registration table as you arrive, that supports both a local hunger organization that the host church chooses, as well as Presbyterian hunger assistance through the denomination. For this February 2019 stated meeting, the local portion will support Food2Go, which provides food on weekends for Centerville children in need. Please give generously to support young people in our area, as well as around the nation and world through our denominational hunger program.

MISSION AT EVERY MEETING In November 2018 we began a new initiative inviting presbyters to bring items with them to each presbytery meeting to support a mission of the host church. Our host at this February meeting, Southminster Presbyterian Church, requests that you bring the following items to support Brigid's Path, which provides in-patient care for drug-exposed newborns. Please bring one or more of the following items:

4 X 6 photo paper, 39 gal. trash bags, paper towels (rolls), tri-fold paper towels, K cups, cream and sugar, and juice boxes.

Each gift you make—to the Hunger Offering and to the Mission At Every Meeting initiative--is a sign both of our gratitude to God and of the covenant that links together all our presbytery’s churches in ministry and love. Thank you!

REPORT OF THE STATED CLERK February 9, 2019

Supplemental Packet

For Information: o Today’s Musicians – We are delighted that soloist Jacob McGlaun will offer “As

I Went Down to the River to Pray,” arranged by Mary McDonald, during today’smeeting. We are also grateful to organist Jim Pera and guitarist Art Nitsch for theirmusical contributions to our time together.

o Correspondence Received:o Letter from the Board of Pensions responding affirmatively to the presbytery’s

request that the Board grant relief from certain 2018 vacancy dues for the NewCarlisle: Honey Creek Church

o Minister Cards—Minister cards for Teaching Elders (Ministers of the Word andSacrament) for 2019 are now available. Please see Marge Morgan at the Februarymeeting for your card, or contact Larry Hollar afterward to arrange to receive yourcard.

o Financial Reports in packets—This Supplemental Packet includes the 2019presbytery financial reports through January 2019 (pp. 53-58). The AdvancePacket (pp. 45-50) contained the year-end 2018 presbytery financial reports.

o Statistics update--As of February 7, 35 of our churches had completed or wereclose to completing their statistical reporting for 2018. We ask remaining churchesto continue their efforts, since the annual statistics season ends for churches onThursday, February 14, 2019. In the 2017 statistics season that ended a year ago,our presbytery was one of only three presbyteries out of 170 across thenation that had 100% participation, with every church completing itsstatistical report. Thank you to all who made that happen, and let’s keep thatgreat record intact for 2018!

o Travel to Colombia—The Stated Clerk is very grateful to our presbytery forproviding continuing education time and funds allowing him to travel to Bogotá,Colombia Jan. 31 to Feb. 3 for a key meeting of the Colombia Mission Network. Formore than a decade the Network has helped link presbyteries, individuals, groups, and educational institutions in the PCUSA and the Iglesia Presbiteriana deColombia in a vital partnership that includes sister church relationships, a regularstream of delegations to and from both countries, events, exchanges, deeprelationships, and more. The conference in Bogotá, involving nearly 40representatives from both countries, began the process of envisioning newpurposes and creating a new bi-national coordinating structure for the Network.Stated Clerk Larry Hollar, Teaching Elder Darryll Young, and Ruling Elder Susan

Stewart (Springboro: Covenant) attended the discussions. Our presbytery’s Colombia Partnership Network and our participating churches were recognized regularly as strong, long-standing examples of approaches to equitable shared ministry among presbyteries, churches, and educational institutions in the USA and Colombia. For more information on ways your church can get involved in relationships with Colombia, contact the presbytery office.

MODERATOR’S REPORT February 9, 2019

I will be thinking of you as you gather on February 9th as the Presbytery of the Miami Valley in your stated meeting. Thank you again to Vice Moderator Bruce Saunders for stepping in for me during this time of recovery. I am grateful for all the staff of the presbytery and for the ruling elders and teaching elders who have lifted me in prayer and sent words of hope and comfort. I look forward to seeing you at our May 2019 presbytery meeting.

Since last we met in November 2018, I had the honor of moderating the ordination administrative commission for Rev. Anne Fyffe who was ordained on November 18, 2018 at Southminster Presbyterian Church. It was a great joy to be part of such a joyous occasion. Thank you to all who served on the administrative commission for Anne’s ordination.

Teaching Elder Kelley Shin, Moderator
