Handicraft is an art, skilful activity in which domestic or decorative objects are made traditionally byactivity involving hands and simple tools rather than being made by machine in a factory.Nowadays, handcrafted items have become must haves when we talk about home decor. The trendsof interiors and decors speak high about Indian handcrafted and handmade decorative items.The country offers a beguile gamut of traditional decorative items. Some of the most commonlyused Indian handcrafted products are gemstone jewellery with enamelling, clay & pottery items, lachandicrafts, bone and horn decorative, wooden items, hand woven wall hangings and carpets etc.Each of the handmade piece is unique as it is made by human and not machine. The craftsmen usedifferent media to express their originality. The diversity of the handicrafts is expressed on textiles,metals – precious and semi-precious, wood, precious and semi- precious stones, ceramic and glass.It is a beautiful example of ancient art and craft that is still alive. The source of designs are classifiedin various nature of art where they use different elements to produce simple yet beautiful piece ofart with simplification and imagination and are meant for general customers.Today, handicrafts and handcrafted gift items manufactured and exported from India are muchsought after and have established an unsurpassable reputation in the international market.According to provisional data, the exports of Indian handicrafts in the period of April—August 2014-15 has shown an increase of US$ 256.32 million, which is about 18.06 per cent over the same periodin 2013-2014
Introduction to Handicraft:
Introduction to Indian Culture - Festival:India is anciently known as Hindustan or Bharat where majority of citizens are Hindu by religion.India is a country popularly known for bravery, food, hospitality and intelligence. Also, India is acountry of natural beauty, colourful celebrations and festivals. Diwali, Holi, Makarsanranti,Rakshabandhan, Krishna Janmashtmi and Navratri etc... are major Hindu festivals people celebrateacross India throughout the year. Moreover with love and affection, Indians celebrate festival ofother religions too. In our Hindu culture, lighting a lamp denotes dispelling away darkness.The lamp is, in most Indian languages, called as “Jyoti”. When we pray to Goddesses by lighting alamp, the belief is that we will be richly rewarded with tremendous prosperity. Married women orgirls of marriageable age are always advised to light a lamp and pray for the welfare of their family,pray for marriage to a good man, pray for motherhood. In reality, it is said that GoddessRajarajeshwari resides in the lamp – she represents the combined form of three Goddesses- DeviDurga, Lakshmi and Sarasvati. Lamp or “Deep” is the symbol of knowledge. Lighting the lamp ofknowledge within us means to understand and reflect upon the significant purpose of each of thefive days of Diwali festivities and to bring those thoughts in to our day to day lives. Diya is a smalllamp and it is also known as 'Deepak' or 'Deep'. We may call a deep, the traditional replacement ofcandles. The Diyas could be of made of metals and blue pottery also as designer Diyas have beenintroduced in the stores, but usually the Diyas are made by clay and then baked. In the Hinduculture the Deepak made of clay have special significance, as they are preferred in all the holyrituals and worship of Gods and Goddesses. The small clay Diyas are heavily in demand when it istime to celebrate Diwali. The bond between Diwali and Diyas is just as unique. Diwali is a festival oflights and the Diyas exists only to give light to the world.

We can make and trade variety of Handicraft items – Clutches, Batwa or Potlies,Decorative Divas, Envelopes, Papers holder, Jute bags, organza bags, paper bags, handmadejewellery items and many more decorative.As a professional The founder is - an IT recruitment consultant- working for a reputed US company.On the other side she have and always had a strong passion & aspiration to be an active contributortowards the society in order to bring out strength hidden within the most powerful resources"Women". Prerna is a group of women and Prerna Ramesh is founder – of this group based inAhmedabad - Gujarat.
Why Prerna:
I kept walking barefoot on rocky roads. A deep sigh always felt as if I was breathing. In fact, I wastired searching. Everyday I rise, go to work, sleep and rise again. Days begin and end every moment.Everyday I rush to get things done. I earn and I spend. I eat and I live. Though, every moment I feltempty within. Always felt, Life is way bigger than rushing behind worldly material. I certainly knew Iwas searching something. I didn’t know what and where that was till the time I decided to takeupon the project “Prerna”. The strength of creativity helped. Day by day things started to shape up. Ipicked up those rocks. I felt their fragrance. It was the soil of India my Motherland. It said: “You goanywhere but you will have to come back to only me”. Today I only know, there was some certainforce directing me towards every step I took towards “Prerna”. My name is Prerna and now, I wantto say I am a part of “Prerna”.

Our Story:Our story is unlike those Happy Stories. We all are - women carrying one or other pain withinourselves. Yet, we all smile and cheer throughout the day. Many times we have troubles in runningour household expenses. Throughout the month we wait for the paycheque to come. In fact, wehave list of expenses ready before the pay cheque is due even. We don’t have money to pay thefees of our kids, we cannot go for holidays with our kids because it’s expensive. Sometimes we mayhave ration for whole months and sometime we may not. Our kids are beautiful but they don’t haveenough facilities. Most of the time we struggle due to lack of money, sometime we fight but most ofthe times we smile because we are United. We are one in Every situations. We never had Teamwork trainings but we always share our food with others, we care for our families and one another.We remain united in good and bad in every situations because, Team work is in our veins. Morethan anything else, we have great self-esteem and strong – WE CAN DO desire.We work with women coming from different backgrounds and capacity. We work towardsstrengthening their skills - by supporting and training them for the production of Decorative Diyaand other handicraft items. We work towards finding a potential market for their production inorder to make them Emotionally, Financially and socially independent.We may everyday meet with new struggles, hurdles and rocky roads in our path but we aredetermined to work till we are succeeded because we all are Puppets of inspiration.
