PREPOSTIONS
DEFINITION
A preposition is a word that expresses a relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in a sentence.
A preposition is generally placed before its object. Some exceptions are following :-
EXCEPTIONS
When the object is a relative pronoun that, the preposition is always placed at the end of the sentence.
For example:-
This is the house that I am in search of.
When the object is ab interrogative pronoun, the preposition is often placed at the end of the sentences, as:-
What are you working at?
EXCEPTIONS
Sometimes the prepostion is placed after the object for the sake of emphasis, as:-
Quaid-e-Azam is known all the world over.
THE USE OF PREPOSITIONS
At, In:
When we want to refer to the time, “At” is for a point of time and “In” is used for a period of time in which something happens. When we want to refer to a place , “In” is used for large
countries and big towns.
EXAMPLE
He will here at sunset. I shall leave for karachi at 6 O clock in the evening. He died at an early hour this morning. He went to England in 1942. He was born at sukkur in Pakistan.
IN ON AT
We bought the flat in 1942. The race is on Saturday. The film starts at seven thirty.
In + year/ month / season On + day/ date At + clock time/ meal time
In 1998 On wednesday At three O clock
In September On 15 April At lunch
In winter On that day At the moment
In + a week or more On + single day At + two or three days
In the holiday on christmas Day At the weekend
In + part of day On + day + part of day
In the morning On Friday morning

EXCE[PTIONS
We do not use in, on or at before every, last, next, this, tomorrow and yestarday.
We go to karachi every summer. My brother came home last christmas. I will se you next Friday. I leave school this year. The party is tomorrow evening. The group set off yestarday morning.
IN TIME OR ON TIME
“In time” means early enough.
We shall have to hurry if we want to be in time for the show.
I was about to close the door when just in time I remembered my key.
IN TIME OR ON TIME
“On time” means “at the right time”, “on schedule”.
The plane took off “on time”.
I hope the meeting starts “on time”.
Ali is never “on time”.He is always late.
WAY AND END
On the way = during the journey In the end = finally, after a long time In the way = blocking the way At the end = when something stops.
GOOD AND BAD
To talk about a person’s ability, we use good at, bad at. good at tennis, brilliant at mathematics bad at games, hopeless at cooking To talk about whether something makes you healthy or
ill, we use good for, bad for. Oranges are good for you, smoking is bad for you.
GOOD AND BAD
For behavior towards another person, we use good to, kind to, nice to, polite to, and rude to.
My friends have been good to me. You were very rude to me.
BETWEEN AND AMONG
Between is used while speaking of two persons or things.
Among is used for more than two persons or things.

BESIDE AND BESIDES
Beside means “by the side of” Besides means “In addition to” For example:- The dog is sitting beside its master. Besides a pen, he gave me a pencil.
ON AND UPON
On is used before the nouns at rest. Upon is used before the nouns in motion.
He sat on the floor. The dog sprang upon the fox.
FOR AND SINCE
For is used to say how long something has continued.
Since is used to say when something began.
I have been waiting for forty minutes.
I have been waiting since ten past six.
