Preparing you for the new ECDIS regulations
Are you prepared for new ECDIS standards?
The latest revision to the Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems
(ECDIS) were introduced in August 2015. The rules state that previous editions
were still valid for 12 months - and the IMO extended this deadline by another
12 months. That means by August 2017 any ECDIS previously installed must
also meet the latest legislation.
"Any newly installed ECDIS by August 2017 must comply with new IEC and IHO
standards - but also any previously installed systems must also comply."
Why Have ECDIS Standards Changed?
The IEC and IHO consulted users of ECDIS in order to improve usage, training,
and safety standards.
Reporting is now much easier with the new standards, for example. Rather
than a lengthy cell-by-cell analysis, the Master can pull a report of all updated
cells in one go. This not only speeds up the process, saving much time overall,
but ensures no updated cells are missed and all information in the report is
fully accurate and up-to-date.
The new regulations also encourage standardisation, which benefits ship
operators twofold:
1. Any ECDIS system can be operated by any ECDIS-trained crew member
2. Updates across a fleet are standardised, more manageable, and can be
implemented across ships without difficulty.
Finally, there are two safety elements included in the new changes. First,
increased data security means there is much less risk of an accidental upload
of a virus, malware, or corrupted charts. You'll no longer be able to auto-run an
update from a USB stick - which means greater system protection. Operations
will not be brought to a halt with corrupt ECDIS systems, and information can
be kept secure at all times.
The second safety element is that of reduced alarms. Why do we need fewer
alarms? Surely that's a backwards step! Actually, bridge watchkeepers can
end up 'tuning out' ECDIS alarms as they sound continuously or frequently,
meaning they could ignore critical alarms.
How Do I Benefit From These Changes?
The latest ECDIS standards mean you’ll have:
• Reduced need for crew training thanks to standardisation, simplified
language, and common symbols
• Faster integration with other on-board systems including Bridge
Navigational Watch Alarm Systems (BNWAS), Voyage Data Recorder
(VDR), and Bridge Alert Management (BAM) as standard
• Safer updates with reduced risk of data corruption
• Up-to-date charts for safer navigation as standard
• Simplified transfer of data between vessels in your fleet with standardised
charts, symbols, and language
• Overall improved operational efficiency with greater functionality and
reduced safety risks.
The Technical Details
What's been updated?
The main documents changed that affect ECDIS installation, operation, and
testing include:
• ECDIS operational and performance requirements, methods of testing,
required test results (IEC 61174 ed. 4)
• Specifications for chart content and display (IHO S-52 ed. 6.1)
• IHO ECDIS presentation library (IHO S-52 ed. 4.0)
• Test data sets for ECDIS (IHO S-64 ed. 3.0)
With further changes to additional relevant documentation including:
• IMO Resolution MSC.232(82)
• IEC 61162-450
• IEC 62288 ed.2
• IHO S-58
• IHO S-63 ed.1.2
How Does iECDIS Meet The New Requirements?
Martek Marine’s iECDIS system meets all the new requirements as
standard, with the NEW patented 4G antennae allowing any vessel to safely
automatically update charts from any dock. No need for USBs here!

All symbols, language, and connectivity to on-board systems (VDR, BAM,
BNWAS) comes as standard. Alarm systems on the iECDIS have manual
operation to avoid alarm fatigue. Charts are provided by Jeppesen, a Boeing
company - with training delivered by world leaders, Safebridge.
