at Hayfield
At the Hayfield school we believe that Science is about discovery
To help you start you on your scientific journey we would like you to explore one of the most
fascinating areas of science…..Space!
The Universe
The Universe is made of billions of galaxies, each containing billions of stars!
Our solar system is a collection of planets, satellites and other objects that orbit our star,
The Sun.
We’d like you to find out a little more about our solar system
Learning Objectives
Expected Progress Good Progress Outstanding Progress
I can pick out key information from
text to put into my own words
I can pick out and summarise key
information and communicate the information in my
own way
I can select information and prioritise key facts
as well as demonstrating my own imagination
applied to key scientific facts.
Skills you will be developing
• Reading skills
• Prioritising information
• Locating and extracting key words/key information from text.
• Summarising information
• Communication
• Imagination and creativity
Choose a planet from our Solar System
To start with….
We would like you to research information about your chosen planet. Find out interesting
facts such as: • What distance is it from the Sun?
• What distance is it from the Earth?
• Is the planet visible from Earth without a telescope?
• How big is the planet?
• Where did the planet’s name come from?
• When was the planet discovered?
• How long is its day?
• How long is its year?
• Does it have any moons?
• What’s its surface temperature?
• What is its atmosphere made of?
• What are the unique ‘must see’ features of the planet?
• A poster
• A leaflet
• A PowerPoint
• A podcast
• A video
• A song or a poem
• A 3D model with a fact sheet.
