PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Year 12: Last night we held our Year 12 Information evening.

This is a very important evening to support our current Year 12 students as they embark on their final months of secondary education. This evening outlines post-secondary key information and support relating to University/TAFE providers and employment opportunities. Students begin to develop their final pathway plans including completing their VTAC applications (Tertiary admissions process).

Welcome back to Term 3. I would also like to welcome new staff: Spike Matthews (P-6 Sport/Music Specialist) and Joy Morden (Canteen and Home Economics Assistant).

Over the holidays we again had to have a number of trees removed (see pictured below) to support our new secondary building. These works were made possible through the kind donation of time and resources to our school. A big thank you to Paul Fowler and Mick Arundall for their assistance in this process. Our School Building project continues to take shape with the rapid construction of our 7-12 Secondary building (scheduled to be completed by November 2017). Our commercial kitchen upgrade is taking shape. Continued work is taking place in readiness for the refurbishments to existing buildings to create P-2, 3-4, 5-6, canteen, P-6 Arts and woodwork areas.

A school Youth Worker – We continue to have access to a school youth worker, available at the school every second Wednesday. Bec Horgan will be on-site from 9am-3:30pm to provide additional support to both primary and secondary students regarding their health and wellbeing. To make an appointment please contact the school on 5598 3381

Congratulations to: Heidi Stansfield and Emily Morden who are competing at the State Cross Country in Melbourne today. Tuesday 1st August will be a student free day. Staff will be continuing their work on developing formative assessment procedures. A term 3 calendar has been provided in this week’s newsletter

There are a number of uniform items available to support this including: a warm waterproof school jacket, a school beanie and scarf. All items can be purchased through LOWES in Warrnambool. Layby options are available. School beanies and scarves can be purchased through the school canteen. Alternatives to this are not acceptable, follow up from your classroom/form group/ Year level coordinators will occur on a regular basis. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to Term 3 to all students and families. This term has started quickly with students settling into their classes and second semester courses. We welcome Tiffany Jones and James Kerr who are replacing Ian and Anne-Maree Harris who are on three weeks long service leave from the start of this term. It has been fantastic to see how well planned our staff are in leaving detailed lessons in their absence. A great big thanks to all parents who attended our end of term assembly on the last Friday of Term 2. This is turning into a valuable celebration of success for our students. It seeks to reward students for improvement in their academic studies and their attitude and effort. The recognition of success and fostering this culture is one way in building a high performing school culture, one focused on each student doing their best to succeed. There are a range of VCE information evenings, excursions and parent teacher interviews coming up this term. Please keep abreast of the events. We invite all parents to come and discuss the progress of their children with our staff and be aware of the options students have when making decisions for their VCE subject selections. I wish everyone a successful term and look forward to classroom visits discussing the progress students are making in their learning. DAN WALKER, 7-12 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Welcome back to another packed term of exciting opportunities and experiences. Basketball Hoop time, Cultural Performances, Debating, Science Week, National Literacy and Numeracy Week and Kids Matter Day are happening this term and provide a wide variety of extra-curricular activities for students to participate and shine in. Final Assembly I’m still on a high after our final assembly for last term. It was terrific fun and a wonderful way to finish off a long term. Thank you to the many parents who attended, it means a lot to the students to see you there. Well done to Pam Hawkins and her willing Year 3s on putting it all together. Highlights were many, but I can’t go past Tayne Berry cutting up the dance floor to “Happy”. At the assembly, we said farewell to Kevin and thanked him for all his work as our maintenance man. We all appreciate how neat and clean he kept our surrounds and everything he did to keep our kids happy and safe in the yard. Kevin will be missed, especially by the gardening crew pictured below with the new equipment they received in appreciation for the work they do. Replacing Kevin is Charlie Glendinning, who I’m sure will do all he can to fill the big shoes left by Kevin. Welcome Charlie.

Student of the fortnight Congratulations to Hannah Brown for her terrific persuasive piece written to convince her peers that fidget spinners should be banned at school. Please read her piece below and I’m sure you will also be convinced, if you are not already.

Fidget Spinners Should Be Banned! I strongly believe that fidget spinners should be banned at school, because they are irritating and very noisy. Everyone knows they help people with ADHD, but do they really? Scientists say that fidget spinners might not help because the design has changed. So do they actually help with anything? In addition, fidget spinners are a safety hazard. Too many people are swallowing the bearing and choking. However, that’s not all – the bearings that people are swallowing contain lead and mercury. Now do you think they’re just a fun toy? If you didn’t know already, fidget spinners are just plain aggravating! Try working with the sound of fidget spinners spinning everywhere. They are just so loud! People also do stupid things with them. For these reasons, I strongly agree that fidget spinners should be banned during school time. By Hannah Brown

Kangaroobie Camp The Year 3s were very excited to be spending the Wednesday to Friday at Camp Kangaroobie this week. Pam Hawkins and Linda Ludeman have them very well-prepared and excited to be hut building, visiting the Loch Ard Gorge, challenging themselves in the obstacle course, eating yummy food and scaring Mrs Hawkins in the night walk. I look forward to visiting them on Thursday and hearing about their adventures when they return on Friday. Kinder Transition The calendar is busy this term with our Prep teachers, Mandi Poustie and Natasha Krueger, spending time getting to know our prospective 2018 Preps and their families. Next Tuesday, an enrolment briefing will be held in the library from 9:30am. This is a great opportunity for all new families to learn about what needs to happen to enrol their child/ren and ask any questions they may have. Anyone that can’t make the day will receive an enrolment package through the kinder, but if you know of other prospective families, please tell them to contact the school.

What’s happening in your child’s class? Next week I will publish a brief outline of the curriculum being covered at each year level across Prep to 6. The purpose is for you to be able to create conversations with your children in regards to what they learning. Please understand that teachers may change their program from time to time to suit the needs of the children in the class. If you are at all concerned or require more information specific to your child’s learning, please don’t hesitate to ring and speak with the classroom teacher or myself. Lost property I have been harping on this a bit, but there are a large number of jumpers hanging on the hooks outside the Art room, most with names of past students. Please come in a check that one of them is not yours, before I take them to use as spare clothing for students who get wet or dirty in this cold weather. GILL HAMPSON P-6 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
