• 10% of all schools experienced one or more serious violent crimes that were reported to police or law enforcement officials
• Physical attacks or fights with a weapon led the list of reported crimes in public schools [190,000]
• 45% of elementary schools, 74% of middle, and 77% of high schools reported one or more violent incidents
closer to home
• In the 1992 Center for Disease Control Youth Risk Behavior Survey, administered to a non-representative sample of Michigan high school students, 26% of the students reported having carried a weapon of some kind at least once in the last 30 days.

• Hire and train a master trainer
– This person will train others in the Second Step curriculum [Saturday seminars]
– Master trainer will also serve as a support to the other trainers and will also be used for equipment backup

• The curriculum contains approximately 20-30 lessons which vary in length from 20 to 50 minutes
