FORE THOUGHT
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
At the end of the session the participants will be able to
State the concept and importance of session planning
Explain the process of session planning
Design the session plan as per the norms.
SESSION OUTLINE
Introduction of session plan
Components of session plan
Purpose of session plan
Developing a session plan
Tips for preparing the better session plan
Examples
WHAT IS OUR UNDERSTANDING ABOUT SESSION PLAN?
WHAT IS SESSION PLAN?
A set of notes in logical order
A systematic structure of teaching/ learning activities
A checklist of the resources required conducting a session.
A kind of map guiding the total process of a trainers activities.
A training Manual for trainer.
WHAT SESSION PLAN SERVES AS?
During Session development: Planning tool
Before conducting the session: Guide
During the session: Roadmap
After the session: Document
Entering a classroom without planning is like heading cross country without a map.
SESSION PLANNING
PURPOSE OF SESSION PLANNING
Structure the session
Prevents from deviation and save time
Organize its contents/materials
Determine method of its delivery
Clarifies roles of trainers and learners
Evaluate its application/effectiveness
Acts as resource checklist
WHAT POOR PLANNING RESULTS?
Frustration for the both trainer and participantsAimless wanderingUnmet objectivesNo connections to prior learningDisorganizationLack of needed materialsA waste of timePoor management
SESSION PLAN PHASES
1.Pre-assessement
2.Objectives setting
3.Plan the Methodology
4.List of materials
5.Time each activity
6.Evaluation
7.Closure and reflection
LETS BEGIN……..
The format of a session should…
Go one step at a time
Have a picture for every step
Have a minimal reliance on words
An effective session plan is a set of plans for building something – it “constructs” the learning.
The greater the structure of a sesssion and the more precise the directions on what is to be accomplished, the higher the achievement
rate.
Harry Wong, The First Days of Teaching
1.PRE-ASSESMENT
i. What are the characteristics of learners in terms of level, experience, and expectations ?
ii. What do the participants already know and understand?
iii. How do my participants learn best?
iv. What modifications in instructions might I need to make?
2.OBJECTIVES SETTING
………..are the learning outcomes of a lesson i.e. what the trainees should be able to know or do at the end of the session that they could not do at the beginning.
Objective should have the impact on either or all of
Head- cognitive ( Knowledge)
Heart- Affective ( attitude )
Hand- Psychomotor ( skills
OBJECTIVE SETTING CONTD….
Use of action/behavioral verbs
Learning level Objectives
1.Remember(recall, memory)
•State,list,describe,recognise,identify
2.Knowlegde(understanding)
•Explain , interpret, select, discriminate,link
3.Application(able to put new learning into practice)
•Demonstrate•Analyse•Conduct•Perform/write
4.Invention(add new learning, usulally needs on attitude change)
•Invent•Create•Adapt•Design•modify
3.PLAN THE LEARNING METHODS
The choice of method is based on the following
Session objectiveContentLevelsLocationResourcesAbility of facilitator
No. of methodologies are available like Lecture discussion, Games, Brainstorm, Role play, case study, syndicate method etc….
4.MATERIALS/EQUIPMENTS
Plan! Prepare! Have on hand!
(Murphy’s Law)
Envision your needs.
List all resources.
Have enough manipulative (when needed) for groups or individuals
5.TIME EACH ACTIVITY
Allocate time for each major (group of) activity depending on their weight in contents and learning objectives
Allow adequate time for participation and discussion according to the nature of facilitation
6.EVALUATION
Evaluation is important to know
How far the objectives set have been met?Deviations from the plan if any?Future modifications or improvements ?
Kirkpatrick’s four levels model
Reaction
Learning
Behavioral
Outcome
7.CLOSURE
This gives participants the opportunity to reflect
on what they have learned, which is
important for retention.
Summarize what has been learned. Relate it to previous learning.
Tell them what they will learn next.
8. SELF-REFLECTION
What went well in the lesson?
What problems did I experience?
Are there things I could have done differently?
How can I build on this session to make future lessons successful?
Session plan is the answers for 5Ws and 1H question.
Who? Participants
What? topic
Why? session objective
When? Time
Where-? Location
How? Delivery methods and
TIPS FOR PREPARING AND IMPLEMENTING SESSION PLAN
Check whether each learning step leads learning objectives.
Effective time management is necessary while taking session. All the steps of the session plan must be completed within given time
Check before the session that equipment and other training aids are rightly placed and are in order
If there is hesitation on conducting session, rehearse the session plan once or twice in a closed room.
CONTD………..
Prepare audio- visual aids for main points, which can be highlighted during the session.
Modify the session plan, if necessary once implemented or on the basis of feedback from the learners or professional
Keep the session plan for the future use.
Try to develop the session plan on one page of a paper.

FINAL THOUGHT Every teacher teaches three lessons:
1. The one we plan to teach2. The one we actually teach,
and3. The one we wish we had
taught
