CHARACTERISTICS

The DHW Module "Prepac" is adomestic hot water production systemconsisting of :

A plate heat exchanger withdemountable plates, with a highexchange coefficient.

A single-phase 230V circulator,simple or double.

Stainless Steel pipes.

Two isolation valves.

This system will provide an importantquantity of domestic hot water at atemperature of 45 to 60°C.

PLATE EXCHANGER

Convention

As with any plate exchanger ingeneral, there is a hot fluid which isbeing cooled and a cold fluid which isbeing heated.

Throughout this document we will referto the hot water fluid circuit as thePrimary Circuit, and the cold waterfluid circuit as the Secondary Circuit.

Composition

The plate exchanger is made up of aseries of plates held together betweentwo supporting plates, one fixed, theother mobile. The supporting plates areconnected by braces and held inposition by two tension rods.

On the fixed plate there we find theconnecting orifices:

The two fluids flow between the plates, whose judicious combination, usingjoints, allows the perfect partitioning ofthe circuits, fully guaranteeing theirindependence.

Materials

The Plates :

The plates are made of AISI 316 Lstainless steel [Z6 CND 17.12], soproviding excellent resistance tocorrosion (for Cl- 70 mg/l contents).

The gaskets :

These have two main functions:

● To ensure that the exchanger is water tight.● To separate the primary and secondary circuits.

A double gasket around each plateorifice prevents mixing of the fluids. If agasket is faulty, the liquid will leaktowards the exterior of the exchanger.

PLAKEO exchanger plates areequipped with Nitrile (P) gaskets whichare regularly used in heatingappliances for temperatures 100°C

The circulatorBrand Grundfos type UPS operates upto 100°C.

The Frame :Made of S235JRG2 carbon steel, covered with 2 coats of epoxy paint(thickness 15 mm).

number).Nc intermediary plate (odd number)

We have the following equalities :

Number of plates "EVEN" :

Na = 1Nb = Nt/2 - 1Nc = Nb

Nd = 1

Number of plates "ODD" :

Na = 1Nb = (Nt – 1)/2Nc = Nb - 1Nd = 1

Tightening Code:

The spacing of the plates must be:

Remark :

Only in case when the number ofplates is odd the distribution of primaryand secondary channels is identical. Inall cases, it is necessary to ensure thatthe entries and exits of each fluid arecorrect.

To know the exact characteristics ofthe model supplied, please consult theidentification sticker (nameplate)placed on the heat exchanger(example below). Please note that this is only anexample.

Indicative diagram for connecting the PREPAC Module

Feed the Module with primary fluid inaccordance with the nameplate(minimal flow and entry temperature).

Connect electrically the secondarycirculator (pump) with a cable with asection adequate for the powerabsorbed (see motor nameplate).

Warning :In all cases we specifically do NOTrecommend the use of the contactfor regulation of the thermostat tocommand the circulator because itmakes sense to maintain thecirculation of water between theplates even in the absence ofwithdrawal, to prevent scaling of theexchanger.

Provide line protection followingstandards and / or regulations at theplace of installation.

Connection to a grounded outlet(earth) is compulsory.

It should be noted that the suppliedcirculator is provided with anembedded thermal protectionIpsotherm within the motor. Thisthermal protection is generallycomplemented by a fuse protection(short circuit).

COMMISSIONING /

MAINTENANCE

Commissioning

It is essential to provide isolatingvalves on the 4 exchanger outlets.

It is also necessary to provide anexpansion system for the fluids used ina closed circuit (primary circuit).Always provide safety valves for eachof the circuits.

The air must be bled from the pipes. We advise you to fill the two circuitssimultaneously. Always avoid filling thesystem too rapidly and the ‘waterhammer’ effect, which could affect thestanding to pressure of the exchanger.

Check the entry and exit temperaturesfor each of the two fluids. If necessary, adjust the respective flows by using theregulation valves, in order to obtain therequired temperatures. Note the valuesobtained for temperature and headloss (decrease in pressure) in theexchanger maintenance booklet.

Warning !

Before closing theisolation valves « 5 » ofthe PREPAC, make surethat the feed on Primaryis stopped !

Maintenance

The system is unlikely to becomeclogged up as long as fluidscompatible with plate exchangertechnology are used (water TH<15°F). Systematic maintenance of theexchanger is not necessary if this ruleis followed.

However, regular monitoring of the airvent valves and safety shut-off devicesis necessary.

Careful monitoring of exchanger headloss and the respective temperaturesof the In /Out fluids is essential.

In fact, if clogging occurs, there will bea noticeable increase in head loss(P), due to reduction of the section ofthe fluid passage, as well as animportant variation in the T for theoperating conditions of thecorresponding clogged circuit (variationof the exchange coefficients).

Please note however that variations inexchanger performance do not alwaysmean that it is clogged. It is alwaysnecessary to check the entrytemperatures of the fluids and the flowrate before reaching a conclusion, asthey have a great influence onexchanger performance.

It is strongly recommended that theinlets and outlets for each fluid areequipped with thermometers andmonometers which indicate the correctfunctioning of the appliance as well asflow meters on each of the inlets.

If clogging is discovered, the exchangesurfaces must be cleaned

Before opening the exchanger, ensurethe following instructions are observed:

● Let the exchanger cool down for as long as necessary. Make sure youisolate hydraulically the primary andsecondary circuits.

● Open the exchanger and mark the plates.

When removing the plates, wearing ofgloves is recommended!!

If two or more plates are stuck to eachother they need to be separatedcarefully, so that the gaskets remainattached to the correct plate. Theexchange surface should then berinsed with a water jet and scrubbedwith a nylon (or equivalent material)brush. Take care not to damage thegasket. If necessary, use a nitric acidsolution at 5%, then rinse abundantly.

Important : Concentrated nitricacid can seriously damage the skinand mucous membranes! Great careis recommended when handlingthese solutions as well as thewearing of protective goggles andgloves.

● A partially or completely detachedgasket must always be glued backbefore replacing the plates.

.

● Reassemble the plates in the same order and same position(top/bottom), respecting thetightening values given (see"Exchanger").

● Tighten the plates in a regular manner (symmetrically and inparallel). In practice, the 4 tensionrods at the extremities should beremoved first and replaced last.
