Christ is Risen

Hristos Voskrese

Parish News With great joy, reverence and faith we have

celebrated Pascha. For forty days we greet each other

with the affirmation that “Christ is Risen.” These

words summarise our whole faith. By raising from the

dead, our Lord opens for us the gates of Heaven and

restores the hope that had been lost.

This year our Church saw large numbers attending

and participating in the services. Our School was

involved in many ways during Holy Week. From Palm

Sunday, where our students made most of the palm

crosses, to Good Friday, where our students assisted

in both decorating the Epitaphio, and carrying it

during the night service. These experiences are a

unique opportunity to instil in our younger generation

the faith and practices of our Orthodox Church.

I pray that with the light and triumph of our Lord’s

Resurrection, you grow in your love for God. May the

Resurrection be your pillar of hope and salvation.

Independence Day

Celebrations The annual Independence Day celebrations were held

on Sunday 26 March. It was a most convivial event

whereby students from Prep to 12 proudly

represented the School at Martin Place and the march

to the Opera House. This was a historic event as it was

the first time that the new Prep class marched with

the whole school, making it the longest line with the

most students on the march.

The Principal, Mr Hirakis, thanked all the students

who participated in the march and congratulated

them on their excellent conduct, appearance and

support of the School. It was with great pride that

students and staff alike marched together on this

important day.

Primary News Welcome Back to Term 2 Term 2 is always a very busy term with NAPLAN,

assessment tasks, Semester 1 reports and

Parent/Teacher interviews. I wish all the students the

best of luck for the upcoming term.

Uniform change over date Students are required to wear their Winter Uniforms

during Terms 2 and 3. By Monday 8 May, all students

should be wearing their Winter School Uniform.

2018 Kindergarten and Prep Enrolments Have you enrolled for Prep or Kindergarten in 2018

yet? I would like to remind all our existing parents

that if you have a son or daughter, relative or friend

who is intending to enrol in Kindergarten or Prep in

2018, they must complete their application form as

soon as possible and submit it to the School Secretary,

Ms Kiahidis.

School Arrival Time Parents and caregivers must ensure that their children

arrive at School on time each morning in order to

develop a regular routine. The morning bell rings at

8:35am. Parents must ensure that their children are at

School on time to start the first lesson. It is extremely

disruptive to the class when students arrive late and

the teacher has to explain the learning activities

planned, several times in the first 15 minutes. A

reminder also that the names of students arriving late

are recorded and these late days are entered onto the

student’s School Report.

Student Banking School Banking is continuing in Term 2 with the

Commonwealth Bank. The program teaches children

about the importance of saving and money

management. Students wishing to bank must bring

their bank books to School and hand them to their

class teachers on Thursday morning. Happy saving!

Cocurricular Classes Our fantastic cocurricular program for Years 3-6 will

begin again in Week 2 (Monday 1 May). The classes

are as follows:

4pm.

Church Attendance Years 1 and 2 Church attendance has been scheduled

for Sunday 28 May for Years 1 and 2. Please meet

your teachers at the front of the church hall foyer by

9:55am for entry into the church. Please be advised

that students will need to be picked up straight after

church so we encourage parents to stay and take part

in the Sunday mass which should be finished by 11

am.

Greek Lessons As of this term, there will be some changes to the

homework requirements for Greek. All students will

be issued a homework plan on Monday, which details

the homework that needs to be completed for the

entire week. Instructions are written in English and in

Greek to help facilitate all parents and caregivers.

Please ensure that your children complete the

assigned homework and that you sign the sheet daily.

Reports The Reporting Template has also undergone some

changes for this term. The new report template will

include indicators explaining more precisely what

each child is achieving and what areas require further

assistance. Comments for each student will include

English, Mathematics, Modern Greek and a general

statement.

Debating As the new term begins, so does our IPSHA debating

competition. The first round will be held on Friday 5

May at our School. The topic of debate is that 'Today's

Parent/Teacher Night Thank you to all the parents who came to see their

child’s teacher on our scheduled Parent/ Teacher

Interview evening. These Parent/Teacher interview

evenings are scheduled at the end of Term 1 to help

facilitate meaningful communication between the

teacher and the parents and to address any issues or

concerns at an early stage in the year. I commend

each parent for taking the time to come and discuss

their child’s progress with the staff, and in this way

supporting their child in their studies. I encourage

parents to continue to monitor their child’s progress

and recommend that if they have any questions or

concerns, to contact their child’s class teacher.

25th March Performances Years 6 put on some excellent performances during

our recent 25 March National Day Assembly. The

afternoon showcased a variety of songs, poems and

dances. Congratulations to all our students and their

teachers for their fantastic performances.

Harmony Day Harmony Day is celebrated around Australia on 21

March each year. It's a day where all Australians

celebrate our cultural diversity. The day is also the

United Nation's International Day for the Elimination

of Racial Discrimination.

St Euphemia College celebrated Harmony Day and

used the day to help emphasise the importance of

unity, understanding and tolerance. Students from K-6

all had the opportunity to do some Harmony Day

artwork and also participate in a wide variety of

activities with their class teachers including singing,

drama and art.

Year 6 held a cake stall to raise money for a ‘buddy’

bench and sold a variety of delicious treats to the

students. This year each grade from Prep to Year 6

had the opportunity to perform a dance from a

country of their choice and present it at an assembly.

Infants Easter Hat Parade This year our School continued to showcase one of

the best Easter Hat Parades. The students, as they do

every year, sounded and looked fantastic with their

wonderful hats and their beautiful voices. But the best

part for the students was when the Easter Bunny

showed up to watch the parade too! It was the

highlight of the day which brought smiles to all our

faces. The students entertained the audience with a

selection of delightful songs and dances and paraded

their very creative Easter hats for all to see.

Teddy Bears Picnic Last month, another fun filled activity was organised

between Kindergarten and their Year 6 buddies. To

coincide with the Kindergarten students learning the

letter ‘Bb’, the students of Kindergarten and Year 6

had the opportunity to bring in their teddy bears and

have a Teddy Bears Picnic in the School playground.

What a great morning it was for all! The Kindergarten

students entertained their buddies with a

performance of a collection of bear songs and enjoyed

each other’s company during their picnic. It was a

wonderful bonding experience between Year 6 and

their buddies. We look forward to more activities in

the near future.

Incursion—NRMA Road Safety Students from K-6 got the opportunity to take part in

the NRMA Road Safety Incursion where they learnt

correct protocols and procedures for travelling in their

car and riding their bikes. The students really enjoyed

the hands on demonstrations and were astonished by

some very interesting facts. A thank you also to Mr

Year 4- The Rocks Walking Tour Last term, Year 4 went on a historical walking tour

through The Rocks to learn about the history of

Aboriginal people from an Aboriginal perspective.

Students heard the stories of the strong role models

in our past and discovered some of the important

milestones in Aboriginal political history and the

people, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, who have

made these things happen. All the students had a

wonderful time and left with a wealth of knowledge

on the Aboriginal people that inhabited Sydney

Harbour and The Rocks area before European

settlement.

origami, performed Tai Chi in the courtyard, ate

traditional Buddhist monk cuisine and observed talk

sessions in the main temple halls. All the students had

a great time!

Half Yearly Examinations Year 11 examinations will take place from Monday, 22

May till Friday, 26 May.

memorising and restudying.

We wish all students good luck!

Sports Report Krystian and Nikolas Papadopoulos have been

selected to represent the Sydney South region and to

play for the Sydney Rebels Touch at the state junior

regionals in April at Ballina. Considering both boys are

the youngest in the age groups, Krystian playing 18s

and Nikolas playing 16s, this is a huge

accomplishment.

SWISSA Swimming Carnival The following students performed exceptionally well

at the SWISSA Swimming Carnival on Friday 10 March

and have now qualified for the AICES Swimming

Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park on 30 March. They

will be competing against the best swimmers in the
