The story captures a real life tale of a Year 1 boy in the United States who demonstrates many of the attributes we hope to develop in our learners. The video recounts his learning journey as he attempts to create a scientific drawing of a butterfly. Like most Year 1 boys, his first attempt looks rather simplistic and fails to include the necessary detail. However, perhaps unlike many Year 1 boys, he sought the feedback (specific and constructive) of his peers before trying again, and again. In fact, Austin has six attempts in all, before he is satisfied. Austin’s tenacity, perseverance, openness to feedback and eye for detail are essential in the overall outcome. I discussed the story with the boys and reflected with them on these qualities and reminded them that failing (or falling short) is an essential part of learning. If we never fail then it is safe to assume that the things we are attempting are too easy. However, the key to failing well is the ability to bounce back, learn from one’s mistakes and strive for greater success each time. My hope is that we are creating an environment that encourages boys to fail well, reflect on specific feedback from others and then continue to strive for excellence. This is certainly an integral part of the Primary Years Programme; a commitment to rigour and excellence as well as a focus on developing our students as lifelong learners. If you would like to watch the short video it can be found here. Our commitment to excellence encompasses all areas of school life. This week a number of our boys in Year 5 and 6 ventured to Knox Grammar School to participate in this year’s Da Vinci Decathlon; an event designed to celebrate the academic gifts of our students by providing a stimulating and challenging competition run in the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon. WHITSUN TERM | BULLETIN VI FRIDAY 29th MAY 2015

At the conclusion of this week’s Year 3 to 6 Chapel I showed the boys a short video about a little boy named Austin.

My hope is that we are creating an environment that encourages boys to fail well, reflect on specific feedback

from others and then continue to strive for excellence. This is certainly an integral part of the Primary Years Programme; a commitment to rigour and excellence as well as a focus on developing our students as lifelong learners. If you would like to watch the short video it can be found here.

through and the boys’ achievements are brilliant! Congratulations to all of the boys on their achievements. Today all of the boys from Pre-K, Kindergarten and Year 1 had the opportunity to travel to Summer Hill to be part of the ‘Kindy Proms Annual Concert’. The concert is a celebration of music led by senior boys from the High School. Throughout the concert there were confused conductors, dizzy drummers, clumsy cymbalists and lots more. The boys had a fantastic time and were highly entertained.

Everything is shaping up well for tomorrow’s Rugby Gala Day at Bressington Oval for our Year 3 boys. The Gala Day is a perfect opportunity for the boys to put into practice all of the skills they have been developing over the course of this term. If the younger boys are looking for some inspiration, the Gala Day is immediately followed by our 2nd XV and then our 1st XV.

NEW PROCESS FOR LOST BOOKS:We are updating our method of receiving payment for lost books, previously you have been given the option of paying in cash, or adding the charge to your school account. We can no longer accept cash, so now for any books that are deemed lost by the end of each term, we will add the relevant charge to your accounts at term’s end. If the book is returned within a reasonable period of time in the following term, we can reverse the charge.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIMEThis week on Wednesday at 11am we as a school stopped to read the Brothers Quibble by Aaron Blabey. It was a time that all boys across campus engaged in the shared reading. It was an absolutely delightful experience, one in which many of our boys could relate to! We would like to say a huge thank you to all boys and staff for their collaboration and enthusiasm for the morning. It was a true success!

LIBRARY NEWS

After a long period of service to the school we say goodbye to Mrs Jo-Anne Gallop as our Library Technician, and we welcome Miss Courtney McLeod. Miss McLeod will be helping the boys with their borrowing, assisting Miss Hexton in supervising the boys in the library and making sure our wonderful library runs as smoothly as possible. Feel free to come in to say hello to the new addition to our team, and of course to peruse the many new books we have available to loan!

REFUGEE GUEST SPEAKERCuc Dang

On Thursday 21st May, Year 6 had the pleasure of listening to and interacting with a special guest. Cuc Dang, the aunt of Nathan Dang (6C), gave up her time to talk to the boys about her experiences fleeing Vietnam in a fishing boat after the fall of Saigon.

The talk supported the current unit of inquiry - Where we are in Place and Time.

Cuc spoke in great detail and compassion about her remarkable escape from Vietnam, her treacherous journey and her first impressions of life in Australia.

Cuc also fielded an array of mature and thought provoking questions from the boys, with expertise and sensitivity.

The boys thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to hear about the refugee experience from a primary source, and thanked Cuc for allowing them to inquire into her remarkable life.

OUR NEW LEARNING SPACEMAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!

Central Idea - Unseen forces can have an effect on the physical world around us.

Year 2 boys challenged their thinking as they brainstormed their understandings on our new whiteboard tables. This learning space enabled the boys to reflect on their understandings individually and then allowed them to process their ideas as they explained what they had written.

We took two words from their central idea- ‘Unseen Force’.

This is what the boys shared:

Last weekend saw Sydney’s wet weather play a part in the cancelation of all home fixtures of Rugby and Football that were to be held at Bressington Park. However, Football fixtures for the Under 10’s and 11’s did go ahead against St Ignatius College Riverview and Grammar St Ives respectively. Our teams have been training hard, with a concentration on fundamentals and simple game play, and although the results may not always show it, our teams and individual players are showing gradual improvements. Although sport at Trinity is about fun, being active and team work, it is important to also address individual achievement and improvement. Having spoken to coaches about weekend games I would like to highlight the performances of certain boys for their improvements. Mentions go to:

> Christian Farr U/11 A Football

> James Mallios U/11 C Football

> Edmund Baker U/11 C Football

> Ryan Barclay U/10C2 Football

Tomorrow we will be having our second Year 3 Gala Day for the year which will be for Rugby. Our Year 3 boys have been training to develop their skills in all aspects of Rugby since the beginning of the winter season. There are many objectives to this Gala Day including the development of skills and to encourage boys to give Rugby a go, but the main objective is for the boys to have fun and enjoy themselves with their housemates. I wish all the boys the best of luck for the day and sincerely hope that they enjoy themselves.

We also have fixtures against Knox, Redlands, St Patricks, Barker, Newington and Waverly in Football, Rugby and AFL going on at different venues around Sydney. Best of luck to all our teams and boys. I hope the hard work you are putting in at training is evident in your performances on the field. Also, I would like to recognise our swimmers, led by Mrs Spork, who train early every Saturday morning at Enfield Pool. Keep up the good work so that Trinity’s strong aquatic traditions and success are maintained.

Finally I would like to wish Theo Kidd the best of luck at the CIS Rugby trials on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Theo isn’t the only representative from Prep. Congratulations to Mrs Burke who has been appointed CIS Rugby Team Manager for this year.

CUB AND SCOUT NEWS

Region Camp is getting closer and the Scouts are starting to plan for a fun long weekend. Even though it is only three days, the Scouts will come home from Region Camp more capable and mature than the boy you waved goodbye to on the Friday night.

Outside of the normal support structure of his family, away from the solitary distractions of modernity, a Scout must both take care of himself and cooperate with his peers. He does all this in a supportive environment that permits failure without compromising safety. He’ll be challenged to expand his abilities, to accept and offer help, and to function cooperatively in everyday tasks.

Here’s some of what your Scout does at Camp: > Gets up in the morning on schedule. > Shares a tent with other Scouts and keeps it neat and clean. > Shares chores to maintain the campsite. > Shares three meals a day served family style sitting at a table or around a campfire with seven other people.

> Serves as a waiter for his table setting, helping to cook, serve and clean up after meals.

> Sets and follows a schedule of activities according to his interests and the interests of his Patrol.

> Is responsible to find his way to and from these activities and manage his time.

> Builds character and values by attending campfires, ceremonies and reflecting on his activities.

> He is complimented by adults and peers. > His opinions are valued and heard by other Scouts and adults. > Has the opportunity to take on real responsibility and lead others.

> Makes a new friend. > Strengthens existing friendships. > Learns new skills. > Tries something he has never tried before. > Learns about the environment. > Challenges his critical thinking skills. > Puts what he learns into action. > Works with others to establish and achieve goals. > Uses his time to contribute to the goals of others. > Trades T.V., video games and cell phones for actual social interaction.

> Finds healthy resolution of conflicts. > He benefits from positive peer pressure following the good example of older Scouts and leaders.

Region Camp is challenging, adventurous, it’s full of possibility. Camp is an opportunity to let him go a little – let him stand on his own two feet, it’s an expression of confidence, of trust in his

abilities and a test of your parenting.

There are three simple things as parents we can do to help our Scouts prepare for camp (and boys prepare for School camps too!).

1. Put your Scout’s name and troop on EVERYTHING! If they are attending an event with dozens or hundreds if other Scouts an misplace a piece of clothing or gear there is a much better chance it will find its way back to them if it is clearly marked with their full name and troop. There will be over 700 Scouts at this year’s Region Camp!

2. Please DON’T pack for your Scout! If you pack for your Scout, they won’t know what they have or where it is. Letting Scouts pack for themselves is a little trying for some parents. Work with them instead: start with a list, lay everything out and check it off as they pack. Will they forget somethings? Almost certainly! Building self-sufficiency is an important part of Scouting, and packing your own gear is a great way to do just that.

3. Help your Scout keep track of their gear. I can’t tell you how many times a Scout has told me that they are without some key piece of gear because they couldn’t find it at home. After every camping trip see that your Scout unpacks, checks their gear is clean and dry, and stores it in a storage tub with lid so it is there for the next trip.

Congratulations this week to Rohan Shetty for completing his Scoutcraft badge, as well as Dan Bellero for achieving proficiency badges in Collecting and Team Sports, and Harrison Brown for also achieving proficiency badge in Collecting.

All students interested in Scouts are welcome at 3rd Summer Hill (Trinity Grammar) – the Group is currently running programs for all Trinity boys from 7.5 years up to 10.5 years (Cubs) and 10 years up to 15 years (Scouts). Older students, including those interested in service projects for IB and Duke of Edinburgh, are also welcome. The Group meets in the old gymnasium at Summer Hill Campus on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 7:30pm.

OSHClub School Holiday ProgramOur School Holiday Programs are jam

packed with exciting activities and

awesome excursions in a safe and

friendly environment for primary

school children aged 5 – 12 years of

age. (Some programs cater for 3+4

years olds)

All our Team are fun and friendly and have relevant qualifications and background checks (WWC). Bookings are now open Log on to www.oshclub.com.au and complete the online enrolment form, but be quick as places are limited!

For more information please contactOSHClub on 03 8564 9000 or 1800 460 870

Children with additional needsOSHClub supports all children including children with additional needs. Please contact the Holiday Program Manager on 03 8564 9000 at least 4 weeks before the program is due to commence. Each case will be looked at individually and in some cases we will need to apply for funding for extra staff to support your child’s participation in the program.

BehaviourIf a child’s behaviour seriously affects the safety and/or enjoyment of others, parents will be contacted and asked to make alternative arrangements for their child/ren.

What does my child bring? Please bring morning and afternoon tea, lunch and a refillable drink bottle. Make sure you don’t bring any food that needs to be heated or cooked, and remember not to bring anything containing nuts.

Don’t forget your hat, sunscreen and comfortable clothes and shoes. Sorry but no Crocs or Thongs! Remember: no hat means no outdoor play! We’d hate you to lose something valuable, so please leave your money and electronic toys (including iPods, iPads, iphones, smartphones and DS).

CancellationsUnfortunately, for planning and staffing reasons we are unable to accept cancellations or give any refunds once a booking has been placed.

PaymentsPayment for holiday program will be debited from your nominated bank account or credit card weekly.

CCB/CCR:If you wish to claim Childcare Benefit (CCB) and the 50% Child Care Rebate (CCR) you must be registered with the Family Assistance Office. PH: 13 61 50

Late BookingsTo avoid a late booking fee of $5 per child, book online at least 2 full weekdays before your child’s attendance.

Activity Cancellations In the event that an Excursion or an Incursion is cancelled, the activity will either be postponed or an alternative activity of equal value will be provided where possible.

Important information before making your bookings: Incursions are an additional cost to the daily fee. Incursions are provided and charged for each child that attends that session whether they choose to participate or not.
