    Adobe Premiere

    CS6 Basics Tutorial

Tere are two kinds o people. Tose with messy sock drawers and those who organize their socks. Multimediarequires you to organize your socks or pay the price later. - Will Yurman

Organize your project Start out with strong organization

Create a Project Folder or every projectTis older will hold everything associated with your project. Be consistent with your project names.

    1) Create a project older name: It should include your name and a one-word description oyour story. I use the year at the ront to make it easy to find and sort2) Create an audio older within the project older: Any audio captured separately rom video. Tis could includeinterviews, nat sound, sound effects, music, etc.3) Create a graphics older: Any graphics that will be used in your project. Tis could include title slides or ele-ments created in programs such as Afer Effects or Photoshop.4) Create an output older: Where you will put your finished movie5) Create a stills older : Any still photos that are part o your project - they could be yours or archival imagesrom other sources

    6) Create a video older: All your video content NOE the two files at the bottom. Tese are created by Premierewhen you first save your project. MAKE SURE to save them to your project older. .prproj is your Premiere proj-ect file.

**********REMEMBER*******O ORGANIZE YOUR PROJEC. Tis will keep your files together and enableyou to work on the project rom anywhere. I you do not do this, inevitabley youre giong to lose files and yourproject will not work.

    Premiere Overview

Premiere is organized into our planes plus tool bars.

SOURCE: Tis is where you will look at all your stuff - video, stills, etc. and decide what you want to use in

    your story.

PROGRAM:Tis is where you see your story as you build it on the timeline below. Te Program window showsyou what is on your timeline, and will play back your video.

SEQUENCE: Tis is your story. It is also called the imeline. Tis is where you will edit and create your project.

PROJECT: Tis is where all your content and assets are stored. Premiere does not actually store your materi-al - it simply points to wherever your material is. Tat is why you need to stay organized and not move materialaround or leave it on the wrong computer where Premiere cant find it.

TOOLS: Te various tools youll use when editing on the timeline.

Importing ContentTere are multiple ways to bring your assets into Premiere. You can simply click File>Import. But this wont work or all file types and doesnt give you the most control. Te best way to import is to use theMedia Browser in the Project Pane

Select the Media Browser ab Navigate to your media: It can be displayed as either thumbnails or in list view Media Browser should automatically detect the types o files Select the clip(s) you want to use Control Click (right click) and select Import

Editing Basics1. Use the Project Pane and source window to look at your content2. Select which clips or parts o clips you want to use3. Place clips on the timeline (sequence)4. Cut, move, edit, arrange clips on the timeline

    6/18

o begin editing, start with the basics (Imagine Julie Andrews singing Do Re Mi)Use Te Select tool(V) to move clips around and shorten and lengthen them rom theends.Use the Blade tool(C) to cut clips, breaking them into parts or cut out a section in themiddle - get rid o that annoying um or longer sections that distract or go off point.Tose two tools (remember the keyboard shortcuts V or the select tool and C or theblade tool) will allow you to do most o your basic editing. In writing, words sentences and paragraphs are your building blocks. In video it is clips and sequences and edits.Te clips are your basic content - i you didnt shoot good material, or enough material, you will struggle, and do better next time.

Sequences are a series o clips that connect together the way words orm sentencesorm paragraphs It orms the narrative o the story. You need to avoid the basics mistakes such as jump cuts, but you also need to createsomething that makes sense narratively. And finally, the edit establishes the rhythm o your piece think about the sound, andthe narrative. Cuts between shots should eel natural and be invisible to your viewer.Te transition between shots and between scenes establishes a rhythm and eel or yourvideo.
