GETTING READY

SOCIAL: PROVIDING TIME FOR FUN INTERACTION (Choose one or both of these activities.)

Early Arriver• An offering container

Slapjack• Deck of normal playing cards; if you typically have more than 8 kids in each

group, provide an extra deck per group

GROUPS: CREATING A SAFE PLACE TO CONNECT (Choose as many of these activities as you like.)

* If you don’t have time to do all these activities, be sure to do activity #1.

* 1. Working at the Car Wash (application activity / review the Bible story)• Latex gloves• Paper towels• Cleaning materials• Have a pre-arranged area in your parking lot set aside for people who will

volunteer to have kids clean the reflective surfaces and wheels of their cars. This could be where parents park, where staff park, or you could have signs or parking volunteers inform people about it as they arrive.

• Note: If cleaning actual cars is not feasible, provide a different way kids could serve during the ministry hour. This could be cleaning the toys for the preschool environment, prepping a particular supply for an upcoming Sunday/Wednesday, etc. If none of these things is possible, kids could make “coupons” for ways they can serve, and hand them out to family members, teachers, or coaches.

• Note: If you plan to use latex gloves, consider posting an allergy alert in your environment.

2. Chore Chart (application activity)• Print the “Chore Chart” Activity Page; one for each kid• Markers, crayons, pens, or pencils

SOCIAL: PROVIDING TIME FOR FUN INTERACTION Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today’s story.

Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Ask God to show kids some opportunities where they can put others first. Pray that your few would have hearts of humility, allowing them to serve others with eager attitudes.

1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEAWHAT YOU NEED: Offering container

WHAT YOU DO: • Invite kids to put their offerings in the container.• Talk with the kids and compare stories of the dirtiest, smelliest, or grossest jobs anyone has ever done. (Examples could

include: really dirty dishes, pet mishaps, storm damage, food that got left out, etc.)

2. SLAPJACK GAMEWHAT YOU NEED: Deck of cards

WHAT YOU DO: • Gather the kids together in a circle. (If you have more than eight kids, divide them in half and give each half a deck of

cards.)• As the cards get dealt out evenly between players, explain the game of Slapjack. o Players will go around the circle, taking turns each laying down one card face up in the middle of the circle. o Whenever a jack is laid down, all players try to slap their hand down first. o The first person to slap the jack or the person with his or her hand on the bottom of the pile keeps all the cards

below the jack. o That player adds the cards he won to his original stack, and play resumes again. o If a player runs out of cards, he is out. o The game is over when one person ends up with all cards or if time runs out, the winner is whoever has the

biggest stack.

WHAT YOU SAY:“Usually when we think about winning a game, we think about being ‘on top.’ But in Slapjack, to win you have to get on the bottom faster than anyone else. Being on the bottom of a pile usually isn’t associated with good things, but today we are going to learn why it is better for people who follow Jesus to be the first to take the worst position to serve others. [Transition] Let’s go into Large Group to find out why that might be.”

Lead your group to the Large Group area.

GROUPS: CREATING A SAFE PLACE TO CONNECT Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions.

*1. WORKING AT THE CAR WASH (application activity / review the Bible story)WHAT YOU NEED: Latex gloves, paper towels, cleaning materials

WHAT YOU DO: • Escort the kids out to the pre-arranged, designated parking area and explain to them that when reflectors, headlights,

and brake lights get dirty, it is harder for cars to be seen on the road. Cleaning them regularly helps everyone be safer.• Assist and direct the kids to clean the designated areas of the cars.• As you clean, remind the kids that in Jesus’ day, people traveled by walking most of the time and their feet would be

covered in dust and dirt from the road, just like the areas of the cars they are cleaning.• As you return to your small group area, make sure kids get a chance to wash their hands. Remind them that in the story,

Jesus washed the disciples’ feet and it was not a fun job, but He did it to set an example of serving others.

WHAT YOU SAY:“In our story today, Jesus showed the disciples that no one is above serving someone else. In their culture, washing the feet was reserved for the lowest-ranked servant. So for Jesus himself to wash the disciples’ feet, He was making a pretty powerful point about how we are to serve others. And when we follow Jesus, He can help us to change our hearts. When that happens, we can become willing to give up what we think we deserve in order to help others. [Make It Personal] (Talk about a time you gave up something that you deserved.) Once we are willing to give up what we think we deserve, serving others becomes far easier for us. [Bottom Line] I can put others first by serving them.”

2. CHORE CHART (application activity)WHAT YOU NEED: “Chore Chart” Activity Pages, writing utensils

WHAT YOU DO: • Hand out the “Chore Charts” and ask kids to fill them out with chores they are assigned to do at home and how often

they have to do them.• If kids don’t have assigned chores, then ask them to think of some things they can do this week. Some examples might

include: set or clear the table, fold their clothes, make their bed, vacuum, take out the trash, clean the countertops, clean the baseboards, or offer to do a job that is normally a parent’s or older sibling’s responsibility.

• Once you are finished with the charts, instruct kids to cross out the word “Chore” at the top of the chart and write “Serve” to replace it.

WHAT YOU SAY:“This started as a chore chart that listed tasks and jobs and duties that you have to do around the house. But that’s not the attitude Jesus had about serving others. The disciples thought of washing feet as a chore, but Jesus thought of it as a way to serve others and put them first. That’s why I had you cross out the word ‘chore’ and write in ‘serve.’ Stop thinking about these as tasks you HAVE to do and start thinking about them as ways to serve your family and those who live with you. aren’t serving others like Jesus did until we cross out the word ‘chore’ in our hearts and serve others from a heart of love. [Bottom Line] I can put others first by serving them.”

3. HAVING A BALL (memory verse activity)WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, prepared soccer ball with “Memory Verse Cards” attached

WHAT YOU DO: • Help your few to look up Philippians 2:3 in their Bibles. Then read it out loud together a few times.

Finding verses with 4th-5th graders: Our verse is from Philippians. Ask kids to tell you whether that’s in the Old Testament or the New Testament. (New) So we know it’s toward the back of the Bible. It’s one of the letters written by Paul. When they find Philippians, explain that the big numbers on the page are the chapter numbers. Tell them to find chapter 2. Explain that the small numbers are verse numbers. Tell them to them find verse 3 in chapter 2.

• Leave the Bibles open to the memory verse and ask kids to line up shoulder to shoulder, facing you.• Stand opposite the kids and hold the soccer ball.• Toss or kick the ball to one of the kids in the line. • That kid has to pick it up and read out loud whichever word is pointed directly toward him.• Then he has to try to remember what the next word of the verse is and say it out loud. • If kids have trouble remembering they can look at the open Bible for a hint.• Continue until all the kids have had a turn or two.

WHAT YOU SAY:“This verse tells us not to do anything just to get ahead. What are some things we do to get ahead of others or to put ourselves first? (Be the first in line; try to get out of doing something we’re responsible for; put all the best people on your team for a game or sport) But God asks us to flip that! He asks us to think of others first and ourselves second. [Bottom Line] I can put others first by serving them. And when you focus on serving others, you start to naturally put their needs ahead of your own, which ends up making you more like Jesus!”

Optional Additional Discussion Questions• Why do we think we deserve things? Why is it so hard to give them up to serve others?• Why do you think Jesus washed the disciples’ feet? What was their reaction? What do you think would have been

your reaction?

PRAY AND DISMISSWHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed

WHAT YOU DO: • Instruct the kids to stand in a line with one hand on the shoulder of the person in front of them.

• Ask the kid at the front of the line to move to the back and pray a short prayer for the person who is now in front of her. Kids should pray for their peers to have opportunities to serve someone this week.

• Be prepared to help them with suggestions: I pray that Billy will help someone else in school this week; I pray that Mary will serve others this week; I pray that Joey will put others first.

WHAT YOU SAY:“To put others first sometimes we need to move ourselves to the back of the line. This is one way of following the example Jesus gave us of serving others. [Bottom Line] I can put others first by serving them.”

As adults arrive to pick up, ask the kids, “How did we learn to put others first today?”
