PRELIMINARY TASK
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM MY PRELIMINARY
TASK
I have learnt a variety of new skills in the process of making my preliminary task, some are
simple but effective things and another's a more complex. Some of the things I have learnt
are:
- Storyboarding
- Attaching cameras to tripods and setting it up for the shot
- Filming all the different camera angles
- Editing
- Creating + adding sound
- Group work
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM MY PRELIMINARY
TASK – ISSUES FOUND
There were various issues we found when conducting our preliminary task:
• Managing time – this was an issue as we didn’t always use the time we had correctly. Our
biggest problem we found was we spent too long filming and didn’t leave enough time to
edit the clip as much as we would have liked.
• Continuity – this was the biggest problem we had, as in our clip we are wearing obvious
different clothing in most scenes and therefore breaking rules of continuity. However
these mistakes occurred because of poor communication between our group revolving
around when we would be filming, so these mistakes can easily be corrected when it
comes to our actual piece.
• Group work – group work could sometimes be a problem as the members of the group
may have different ideas to others causing arguments. However we didn’t have this
problem very often and mostly agreed as there was only two of us.

TASK - SUCCESS
• Filming – Our filming was quiet successful as we only had two people in our group,
however we still managed to film and both feature in the film without any help from other
groups.
• Editing – To start off we struggled with the editing process as both of us had never used
the software before, however we soon managed to work it out and successfully edit all our
clips together as well as editing sound effects and music over the top.
• Finished Version – Overall I believe our finished version was successful as it was our first
piece and we included a variety of key things such as camera shots, sound effects/music
and editing.
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM MY PRELIMINARY
TASK – AREAS OF DEVELOPMENT
• What went wrong: Various things went wrong during the preliminary task such as
continuity, choice of location for filming and time management.
• What would I avoid: If I did this task again I would try to avoid making any continuity
errors.
• What would I do better: I would try to manage my time a bit better, so that I can have
enough time to effectively complete both filming and editing the best I can. I would also
change my location or do it at a different time as in my video you can here various
background noises coming from he kitchen and other students walking round at these
times.
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM MY PRELIMINARY
TASK – HOW DID I MEET THE BRIEF
• 180 degree rule: We managed to stick to the 180 degree rule when
filming. Frank was on the left whereas I was on the right, which meets the
main principle of the 180 degree rule.
• Shot / reverse shot: We tried our best to stick to this rule however when
using this shot there were a few continuity errors like the clothing change
from shot to shot due to the different days in which we filmed.
• Match on action: We managed to successfully edit all our clips together
make to make our final piece fluent in it change from shot to shot.

TASK – PEER ASSESSMENT
• I think that both Max and Frank contributed equally to their project, taking it in turns to film
and both starring in the video. The video was really good in my opinion, I think that the
storyline and the acting was of a high standard. I think that the only criticism I can make is
that the continuity isn’t very good, in almost every scene the characters are wearing
different clothes. Overall, I think that the Preliminary task that was completed by Max and
Frank was good for a first attempt.
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM MY PRELIMINARY
TASK – PERSONAL EVALUATION
I believe I did well in the filming aspect of the task and using all the different
variety of camera shots/angles. However I do believe I need to work on my
editing before I do my final piece because I wasn’t familiar with the software and
I wasted a large chunk of time trying to work out what everything does. But
overall I believe for mine and Franks first attempt with most of the equipment
and software, I would consider it a success and think our pieces can only get
better from now on.
