INDUSTRY UPDATE
POWER. KEY TO INDIA’S FUTURE GROWTH
The growth of the Indian power sector is crucial for the overall economic prosperity of the country. India is tentatively remerging
as an economic power - the economy expanded at a rate of 4.8% in the July-to-September period last year, up from 4.4% in the
previous quarter. The acceleration was faster than analysts had been expecting.
With the growing economy, expanding population and increasing demand for power, India is an attractive destination
for the power industry.
POWER-GEN INDIA & CENTRAL ASIA
According to a RNCOS research report, ‘Indian Power Sector Analysis’, the Indian power sector will add nearly 45,000 MW to its
total installed capacity by 2014.
Further to this, the Ministry of Power, India has set a target for adding 88,000 MW of electricity capacity in the 12th Plan
(2012-17) and a forcast 93,000 MW in the 13th Five-Year Plan (2017-2022). During this period, an investment of about US$122
billion is expected in power generation projects.
RENEWABLE ENERGY WORLD INDIA
There is a strong opportunity for private developers to expand and tap into impending infrastructure developments and advances
in small/large scale renewable energy and small hydro projects. India has taken a signifcant step forward in implementing its green
growth agenda by increasing its installed capacity of solar power from around 30 MW to more than 2,000 MW.
DISTRIBUTECH INDIA
To meet the demand for power, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited PGCIL, India’s state-controlled transmission and
distribution utility, has confrmed its commitment to invest $5.1 billion on 12 transmission infrastructure projects in the country.
South India has already joined the national electricity grid, completing the integration of the entire country into one seamless
network for delivering power to consumers. It has become one of the largest operating synchronous grids in the world with about
232 GW (gigawatts) of installed power generation capacity.
DELHI
Welcome to the city of Delhi, the traditional and current capital of India, as well as its commercial/political hub. With a population of 22
million, Delhi is the world’s second most populous city and the largest city in India extending over an area of 1484 sq km. Situated on
the banks of Yamuna, the city is bordered by the Haryana in the north, west and south and Uttar Pradesh in the east.
During your stay, we encourage you to explore the fascinating culture of this multifaceted city, visiting historic landmarks such as the
India Gate, built as a memorial to the Indian soldiers who were killed during World War I, the 16th century Humayun’s Tomb, as well as
Qutab Minar, a soaring, 73 m-high tower of victory, built in 1193. Other historic and cultural attractions include Parliament House, the
Presidential Palace, the National Museum, the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Nehru Museum.
And don’t forget to check out the boutique shops and street markets, and sample Delhi’s wide selection of cafes and restaurants
where the favours of the world come alive. Delhi is also the best place to experience India’s broad range of arts & culture including
Bollywood flms and the seamless blend of traditional and ultra-modern dance and music.
Whether it is food, shopping, or cultural activities, the city has no shortage of variety - here trends and traditions go hand in hand.

WELCOME FROM PENNWELL
WELCOME TO THE PRE-EVENT GUIDE FOR THE PREMIER POWER EVENTS IN INDIA:
India’s economic growth appears to have bottomed out, with growth conservatively forecast to rise to around 6% this year. This is
obviously good news, but it is its fast-approaching national election, which is widely anticipated to produce a change in government that
hopefully will mark the rebound of Asia’s third largest economy.
Interestingly, despite the slowdown in India’s economic growth in recent years, the demand for electricity from its population, particularly
its emerging educated middle class, has continued to rise. Undoubtedly, this growth in electricity demand informed the ambitious target
for new generation capacity that the Government of India set for the current Five-Year Plan, which runs up to 2017.
India relies heavily on fossil fuels, in particular coal, for its electricity production and it will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
However, fuel supply issues continue to plague projects in its much-needed thermal power capacity development pipeline; topping the
agendas of many professionals in the Indian power sector.
Over this decade, natural gas’ share among the major fuels is still expected to grow. Although, once again, concerns over ensuring
reliable fuel supplies for gas-fred power projects exist. India, however, remains keen to diversify its generation mix away from fossil fuels,
encouraging greater development of what are seen as low-carbon resources, such as hydroelectric power and nuclear power. In relation
to the latter, India is aiming to supply 25% of electricity from nuclear by 2050. This is an ambitious goal, but if Kudankulam’s second
reactor enters commercial operation at full load later this year, as expected, it will represent an important step forward.
However, the low-carbon resources that offer the greatest potential for India’s diversifcation are renewable energies. India has one of the
highest installed capacities of variable renewables of any developing country and has adopted ambitious targets to further increase the
capacity and related shares of renewable energy consumption with its 12th Five-Year Plan calling for a doubling of current renewables
capacity to a total of 54 GW by 2017.
India has added over 4.2 GW of renewable power capacity in the last 2 years, including about 0.7 GW of hydropower and 3.5 GW of
other renewables (mostly wind), for a current total exceeding 24 GW across the country as a whole. With renewables accounting for
1.4% of total installed capacity, India is committed to renewable energy on a large scale but has a lot of work still to do.
Policies to provide energy access through renewable energy are being integrated increasingly into broader rural development plans with
India developing large-scale programmes that address the dual challenges of energy access and sustainability. However, for energy
access targets to be met, institutional, fnancial, and legal mechanisms must be created and strengthened to support large-scale
renewable energy deployment.
Renewable Energy World India will be looking at the future of renewable energy across India and the ways these ambitious targets
can be achieved.
Exciting news for this year is the launch of DistribuTECH India, Building on PennWell’s highly-respected DistribuTECH brand, this new
co-located event will cover the latest advances in transmission and distribution technologies for the Indian market, as well as discuss
many of the key issues facing the T&D sector, as India works towards its goal of ‘electricity for all’.
The Indian Government is taking several measures to technologically strengthen the grid and prevent future failures following the
country’s massive blackout in 2012 which left more than half the country’s population in the dark due to electricity grid failure. With India’s
demand for electricity expected to reach 900 GW by 2032, the Ministry of Power and Smart Grid Task Force Government of India has
implemented a Smart Grid Vision and Roadmap for India that calls for a nationwide rollout of smart grids by 2027.
The DistribuTECH India conference will include sessions covering topics such as: Smart Grid & Smart Metering; Market Policies &
Regulations, IT security and how India with achieve a Modern Distribution Grid for the future.
Thus, POWER-GEN India & Central Asia, together with Renewable Energy World India and the newly-launched DistribuTECH
India, truly refect one of the most exciting electric power markets in the world.
Taking place from 5-7 May at the Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, this annual event is widely recognized as one of the region’s most important
forums for the power industry and is ultimately the premier event for meeting major players in the Indian and international power sector,
learning about the latest technologies, exchanging ideas and developing new contacts.
Bringing together for the frst time leading power industry companies from across the entire power generation (both conventional and
renewable energy) area, as well as the T&D sector, this is an event NOT TO BE MISSED!
We look forward to seeing you in New Delhi in May.
