Preliminary Task- Using DTP (InDesign) and an image manipulation programme (Photoshop) produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close up plus some appropriately laid out text and masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a mock up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate your grasp of DTP (Desktop Publishing)

2. What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this product

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Page 2: Preliminary evaluation

In what ways does your media project use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media

products?Front Cover similarities

masthead

Cover lines

Dominant image

- rule of thirds and plain

image, both these images focus on the facial area.Barcode

and price

Bright vibrant colours

Page 3: Preliminary evaluation

Differences with front cover Different

background colour, different

colour theme throughout

More magazine uses a lot more

images

I have used a medium

close up and more has

used a mid-shot, more have

used a more

glamorous shot. My cover lines

refer to education

where as more magazines relate to fashion.

Page 4: Preliminary evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms or conventions of real media

products?

Contents Page Uses large

number to make it easy for reader to see

Uses sub headings to help reader

Layout of columns of features and categorizes the magazine Images on background similar layout to make the page look more interesting.

Page 5: Preliminary evaluation

Differences with contents page

ELLE magazine uses a variety of related images, I use 2 very similar images, ELLE looks more professional. ELLE has a colour scheme whereas my magazine looks more plain and boring as it’s is just two colours.

What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of

constructing this product?

Using Moodle

to get

resources.

Using digital cameras (shot, angle and type of shot).

Learning the features of In Design to create my contents and double page spread.

How to use Photoshop, to manipulate images

Page 7: Preliminary evaluation

By using a digital camera it made it easy to ensure that my image was an MCU which filled the frame. I put the image central which as a result didn’t give me much space for cover line, I should have placed the image more to the right so that the left hand side could have been used. I told the girl in the

image to look happy to show that the college has a happy environment. I didn’t observe the rule of

thirds as well as I could have, should of concentrated more on the rule of thirds and

therefore put my masthead above the main image.

I used adobe Photoshop to edit my image to change to contrast and the colour so that my image I used Photoshop to change the level of colour in the image, I darkened the background as well as correcting the red eye with the red eye tool.I used a variety of bright colours to make my magazine more appealing. I used a different range of font types and sizes so that the magazine looked more professional and interesting.

Page 8: Preliminary evaluation

Using in design for my contents page I used the same simple colour scheme that I used on my front cover, by using the colour black it keeps my contents page professional and tidy looking.

I think my contents page could look a bit more like a contents page, at the moment it looks slightly plain and boring. I inserted the two images in design and spaced and slanted them to make the contents page look more fun. The text I used in design is quite formal and makes the college look professional, in contrast to the more fun front cover I think this is acceptable. I have used the word ‘contents’ at the top of the page to ensure that the readers know that this is where they can find what they need in the magazine. To make it look more fun I could have had some unusual shaped boxes around my text. I used columns which I feel organised my page quite well, they are all aligned and the same font is used throughout the page.
