Preface

Preface This manual contains preinstallation information for theAVIA 355/355-X Diode-Pumped Laser.

Read the operator’s manual carefully before operating the laserfor the first time. Special attention should be given to SectionOne, Laser Safety, within the operator’s manual that describessafety features built into the laser.

Use of controls or adjustments or performance of proceduresother than those specified in this manual may result inhazardous radiation exposure.

Use of the system in a manner other than that described hereinmay impair the protection provided by the system.

U.S. Export Control Laws Compliance

It is the policy of Coherent to comply strictly with U.S. exportcontrol laws.

Export and re-export of lasers manufactured by Coherent are subjectto U.S. Export Administration Regulations, which are administeredby the Commerce Department. In addition, shipments of certaincomponents are regulated by the State Department under the Inter-national Traffic in Arms Regulations.

The applicable restrictions vary depending on the specific productinvolved and its destination. INSTALLATION

Introduction The purpose of this document is to assist the user in establishing asuitable location and operating environment for optimumAVIA 355/355-X performance.

Installation Initial installation should be performed by an authorized Coherentservice engineer or by Coherent trained personnel.

Receiving and Inspection

Inspect shipping containers for signs of rough handling or damage.Indicate any such signs on the bill of lading. Report any damageimmediately to the shipping carrier and to Coherent Order Adminis-tration Department.

Retain shipping containers. The containers will be required ifthe system is returned to the factory for service. The containersmay also be needed to support a shipping damage claim.

Coherent recommends that at least three people unpack and trans-port the AVIA 355. The power supply which weighs 85 poundsshould be lifted by two people while the laser head which weighs 48to 56 pounds can be lifted by the third person. The laser head andpower supply are connected by the umbilical.

External Interlock The system will not operate with the interlock open. An interlockconnector is located on the power supply rear panel. The interlockstatus is monitored by the CPU. If the interlock is open, a messagewill be displayed of the power supply front panel.

An external interlock circuit can be connected to the laser systemand wired to a door switch or access panel to provide additionaloperating safety. When the door is opened, the laser will shut down.The fault must be cleared and the diodes turned on to restart thelaser.

To incorporate an external safety interlock circuit into the lasersystem, turn off the laser and remove the jumper from the interlockconnector on the power supply rear panel. Attach a user furnishedexternal interlock circuit to this connector. Any external interlock

circuit should be equivalent to a mechanical closure of the circuit.Under no circumstances should an external voltage or current sourcebe connected to this circuit. External interlock circuitry should beisolated from all other electrical circuits or grounds.

Shutter Interlock The shutter will not open unless the shutter interlock circuit isclosed. If the shutter interlock circuit is opened while the laser isoperating, it will cause the shutter to close but will not turn the laseroff.

Installing the Power Supply

Locate the power supply in a convenient location, preferably awayfrom heat producing sources. Ensure the cooling intake and exhaustare not blocked or obstructed.

In some cases, the power supply is shipped without a connector onthe power cord. Each locality should inspect the power cord andinstall the proper connector if necessary. The connector should beinstalled in a properly grounded outlet with a maximum of15 Ampere service for proper overcurrent and earth fault protection.

Installing the Laser Head

Mounting screws and pin/slot locations for laser head installationare shown on Figure 3. Four M8 or 3/8-16 screws are used to mountthe laser head to the mounting surface.

Remove the shipping cover plate from the front bezel of the laserhead before operating the laser.

The temperature of the laser head baseplate is monitored by theAVIA power supply and is displayed on the power supply frontpanel. The baseplate temperature is used to monitor the effective-ness of heat dissipation. Maximum heat dissipation through thebaseplate is 65 Watts for the 355-3000, 80 Watts for the 355-4500,110 Watts for the 355-7000, and 150 Watts for the 355-X. Thesurface to which the laser head is mounted must be thermallyconductive and well heat sunk to the ambient air by means of it’sthermal mass or by forced air cooling. In most cases, the mountingsurface and structure will be adequate to provide cooling for thelaser head. However, if the mounting surface is not sufficient toconduct heat away, some form of cooling must be supplied. Thiscould be in the form of fins with forced air cooling; or, a watercooled base structure. For air cooling the laser head, the maximumambient air temperature is 35°C for the model 355-3000 and model355-4500. It is recommended that the model 355-7000 be used witha water cooled base structure, available as an accessory. The model

355-X has a built in water-cooled base structure. In all cases theAVIA lasers will operate properly over a wide range of operatingtemperatures, but for maximum power and pointing stability thetemperature of the base plate should vary no more than ±2°C. TheAVIA laser will shut down if the baseplate temperature exceeds40°C.

External Equipment

Connection of optional user furnished external equipment is illus-trated and described on Figure 1.

Umbilical Bend Radius

Ensure the umbilical has a bend radius of 5 inches or greater.

Excessively tight fiber bends (less than a 5 inch radius) can causepermanent damage.

Installation Procedures

After installing the laser head and power supply in accordance withparagraphs titled, Installing the Laser Head, and Installing the PowerSupply, complete the installation as follows:

1. Connect power supply to facility power.

2. Perform the cold start procedure located in Section Three,Operation, within the operator’s manual.

10 Shutter State Output signal indicating shutter status. The output is an optocoupler that conducts when the shutter is open. Positive current flows into pin 10 and out pin 11. Minimum optocoupler current is 2 mA at 0.6 V when asserted. Maximum current is 0.4 uA at 5 V when off. Do not exceed ±10 V across pins 10 and 11. When the shutter is open, the laser beam is allowed to exit the laser. A closed shutter blocks the beam.

20 Pulse Trigger In Input signal that triggers the Q-Switch and produces a laser pulse. Apply more than 3.0 V referenced to pin 21 for a high level signal. Open circuit or apply less than 1.0 V for a low level signal. Pulses are triggered on the low to high transition. Input current will be less than 13 mA. Do not exceed ±10 V across pins 20 and 21.

21 Pulse Trigger In Refer to pin 20.

22 Alert Output signal indicating a fault condition. The output is an optocoupler that conducts from pin 22 to pin 23 when there is an alert. Minimum optocoupler current is 2 mA at 0.6 V when asserted. Maximum current is 0.4 uA at 5 V when off. Do not exceed ±10 V across pins 22 and 23.

23 Alert Refer to pin 22.

24 Reset Fault Input signal to acknowledge cleared faults. Apply more than 3.0 V referenced to pin 25 for a high level signal. Open circuit or apply less than 1.0 V for a low level signal. A low to high transition will acknowledge the faults. The laser will shut down in the event of a fault. When the fault is cleared (not active), the fault must be acknowledged, either through pins 24 and 25 or on the front panel, before diode current and pulsing can be again enabled.

25 Reset Fault Refer to pin 24.

EXTERNAL COMPUTER CONTROL

AVIA Computer Interface

This section provides information on interfacing the AVIA 355 laserto an external computer through the RS-232 connector on the rear ofthe power supply.

The RS-232 interface is based on a set of laser control instructions,consisting of commands that affect laser operation, and queries thatrequest the laser to return status information to the host. The instruc-tion set is sufficient to support user-written programs that emulatethe functions of the power supply front panel.

RS-232 Command Language

RS-232 Command Syntax

Communication with the AVIA 355 is by two types of instructions:commands which set the values of laser operating parameters, andqueries which request the laser to return the value of an operatingparameter.

Any instruction to the laser consists of a command or query writtenas a string of ASCII characters and terminated by a carriage returnand linefeed (<CR>) or a semicolon (;).

For example:

REPRATE=nnnnn<CR> Sets the repetition rate in Hz.

The laser will always respond to an instruction by returning amessage terminated by a carriage return and linefeed. Table 9 liststhe possible responses from the laser.

For proper handshaking, communication programs should waituntil the <CR><LF> has been returned from the laser beforesending the next instruction.

ECHO Mode The AVIA 355 provides an echo mode in which each character trans-mitted to the laser is echoed to the host. This feature can be turnedon or off using the ECHO command (refer to Table 11).

PROMPT Mode The AVIA 355 provides an prompt mode for terminal operation inwhich the laser returns “AVIA>” after each command. This featurecan be turned on or off using the PROMPT command (refer toTable 11).

RS-232 Port Configuration

The RS-232 port configuration is described in Table 10, and typicalcable requirements are shown on Figure 5. The 9-pin female RS-232port is configured as a DCE (data communications equipment)device using only pins 2 (serial data out), 3 (serial data in) and 5(signal ground). Handshake lines RTS, CTS, DTR and DSR (pins 4,6, 7 and 8) are not used and have no connections inside the powersupply.

Setting the Baud Rate

The baud rate of the 9-pin RS-232 port can be changed by means ofthe BAUDRATE=NNN command described in Table 11. After thebaud rate is changed, the new setting will be used until it is changed(even if the system power is switched off).

To set the baud rate from an external computer, send theBAUDRATE=nnnnn command to the laser at the currently setbaud rate. After sending this baudrate command, host computercommunications port must be reinitialized to the new baudrate.

The baud rate can also be set from the front panel screen labeledRS-232 Baud Rate Setup. Follow instructions on the screen tochange the baud rate.

The factory set baud rate is 19200.

Instruction Set Table 11 and Table 12 describe the instructions (long and shortforms) for use with the RS-232 interface.
