Dengue and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever Dengue fever, a very old disease, has reemerged in the past 20 years with an

expanded geographic distribution of both the viruses and the mosquito

vectors, increased epidemic activity, the development of hyperendemicity(the cocirculation of multiple serotypes), and the emergence of denguehemorrhagic fever in new geographic regions. In 1998 this mosquito-bornedisease is the most important tropical infectious disease after malaria, withan estimated 100 million cases of dengue fever, 500,000 cases of dengue

hemorrhagic fever, and 25,000 deaths annually. The reasons for thisresurgence and emergence of dengue hemorrhagic fever in the waning yearsof the 20th century are complex and not fully understood, but demographic, societal, and public healthinfrastructure changes in the past 30 years havecontributed greatly. This paper reviews control. A major challenge for public

health officials in all the changing epidemiology of dengue and denguehemorrhagic fever by geographic region, the natural history andtransmission cycles, clinical diagnosis of both dengue fever and denguehemorrhagic fever, serologic and virologic laboratory diagnoses, pathogenesis, surveillance, prevention, and opical areas of the world is todevleop and implement sustainable prevention and control programs that

will reverse the trend of emergent dengue hemorrhagic fever.

epidemic activity in new geographic regions.

The author states that the reasons for the resurgence and

    The New Woman in Victorian

    Literature

The Victorian era was defined as a series of changes in regards to thesocial, political and moral aspects of England during the nineteenthcentury. Many works during the Victorian period such as Sarah StickneyEllisThe Women of England: Their Social Duties and Domestic Habits,Coventry Patmores The Angel in the House, and John Ruskins OfQueens Gardens show a complex understanding of the intricatepractices constituting Victorian womens lives and reveal the domesticideology of the time. In Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Lady AudleysSecret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon and The Woman in White by WilkieCollins the reader is able to see the tensions of the era regarding the

Woman Question; in particular, the focus within these novels is on the

woman as working for or against the conservative principles of theVictorian Era. The characters of Jane Eyre, Lucy Audley, and MarianHalcombe work against the conventions of idealized femininity duringthe Victorian era as described in the majority of the works of the time.

Inhibitory Effects of Brazilian Propolis on Lipid

    Accumulation in 3T3-L1 Cells

We here investigated the inhibitory effect of Brazilian propolis onintracellular lipid accumulation. Seven ethanolic extracts of Brazilianpropolis were tested for their inhibitory effect on intracellular lipidaccumulation in 3T3-L1 cells. Among the seven Brazilian propolis, theextracts AF-08 and AF-18 had inhibitory effects on intracellular lipid

accumulation. In particular, the Brazilian propolis AF-08 exhibited apotential inhibitory effect on intracellular lipid accumulation. Thus, these results suggest that the Brazilian propolis AF-08 contributes tothe prevention of metabolic syndrome. In addition, five knowntriterpenoids were isolated from the Brazilian propolis AF-08: betulonic

acid, moronic acid, 3-oxo oleanolic acid, masticadienonic acid, andanwnweizonic acid. Four of the triterpenoids exhibited an inhibitoryeffect on intracellular lipid accumulation. Thus, these triterpenoids maybe important as antiobesity agents that inhibit the metabolic syndrome

    Plant genetic engineering for biofuel

    production: towards affordable

cellulosic ethanol Biofuels provide a potential route to avoiding the global

political instability and environmental issues that arise fromreliance on petroleustarch m. Currently, most biofuel is in the

form of ethanol generated from or sugar, but this can meetonly a limited fraction of global fuel requirements.Conversion of cellulosic biomass, which is both abundant andrenewable, is a promising alternative. However, the cellulasesand pretreatment processes involved are very expensive.

Genetically engineering plants to produce cellulases andhemicellulases, and to reduce the need for pretreatmentprocesses through lignin modification, are promising paths tosolving this problem, together with other strategies, such as

    Research on Teaching and Teacher

Research: The Issues That Divide Neither interpretive nor process-product classroom research has foregrounded the teacher's

role in the generation of knowledge about teaching. What is missing from the knowledgebase for teaching, therefore, are the voices of the teachers themselves, the questionsteachers ask, the ways teachers use writing and intentional talk in their work lives, and the

interpretive frames teachers use to understand and improve their own classroom practices.Limiting the official knowledge base for teaching to what academics have chosen to studyand write about has contributed to a number of problems, including discontinuity betweenwhat is taught in universities and what is taught in classrooms, teachers' ambivalence aboutthe claims of academic research, and a general lack of information about classroom lifefrom a truly emic perspective. This article proposes that teacher research has the potentialto provide this perspective; however, several critical issues divide teacher research from

research on teaching and make it difficult for the university-based community toacknowledge its potential. The article also proposes that in order to encourage teacherresearch, the educational community will need to address incentives for teachers, thecreation and maintenance of supportive networks, the reform of organizational patterns inschools, and the hierarchical power relationshipsthat characterize much of schooling.
