Message from Chancellor
"Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself" says
John Dewey. At PES, we believe that rigors of the contemporary
world require professionals not to end their quest for knowledge
along with their stay in the campus. The dynamics of the fast-
changing world urges the academicians to give the right impetus for
making life-long learners out of students. Thus, academia is
expected to sketch the outline of this future society and mark the
path to reach that goal. At the PES University, students enjoy
personal attention, state-of-the-art technology, quality classes and
faculty who truly care about the quality of education each student
receives. The combination of high quality curriculum and cutting-
edge technology makes for satisfied students with high job
placement rates.PES's founding principles – Perseverance,
Excellence and Service – have remained strong through the years as
our academic focus has expanded from teaching-learning to
research. PES University's fundamental mission, in addition to
education and research, is to ensure that our scholarship, when
appropriate, can be brought to bear on the complex challenges
facing society. In addition to creating fertile young for professional
and personal success we have committed ourselves to create
responsible citizens with ethics and good social conduct. This has
been laid out in the vision of PES University “To create
professionally superior and ethically strong global workforce”. I
congratulate the efforts of all stakeholders on successful completion
of first year of PES University and brining out its First Annual
Report.

University is that professionalism should be
built on strong ethical foundation. All PES
University programs shall strive to create
professional manpower with global perspective

PES University
A Brief Profile
Annual Report 2014Annual Report 2014
one of the most sought after technical
institutes by students, parents and
employers. Most of the seats get filled up on
Day-1 of the Karnataka state's admission
process. More than 70% of the eligible
candidates are placed within 3 days of the
start of the placement season every year.
PESIT was granted autonomy by University
Grants Commission (UGC) in 2007 following
the recommendation by Government of
Karnataka and Visvesvaraya Technological
University (VTU), Belgaum. The institute has
utilized the autonomy granted to it effectively
by initiating comprehensive academic and
non-academic reforms. These programs are
getting into a phase of maturity and now
poised to scale these programs to increase
the quality and quantity of education and
research. This has led to the establishment of
PES University as a State Private University.
PES University believes that Faculty,
Students and Infrastructure are the three
pillars on which the university rests,
supported strongly by the foundation of top
management's commitment to excellence.
The top management has shown its
commitment by providing matching grants
for research, encouraging international
participation and establishing state-of-the-
art labs. The university believes in the
comprehensive development and inclusion
agenda for gifted as well as slow learning
students. While the gifted students have to be
encouraged to break new barriers, the slow
learning students have to be supported and
brought up to higher levels through academic
support programs.
Labs and industry-led Centres of
Excellence are created on the university
campus to provide an environment that
encourages research and development to
finally result in helping the economy of the
region. These centres shall germinate
innovative ideas on the campus to blossom as
start-up companies which help the innovators
focus on the technology while the university
takes care of infrastructure and establishment
overheads. We believe that this is a very strong
commitment by the university to encourage
innovation.
SPIRIT Framework: PES University has
developed SPIRIT framework (acronym for
Students, Processes, Identity, Research,
Infrastructure, and Teachers) for continual
improvement in the university.
Students - Methods to attract quality
students year after year, mechanisms to
enhance the learning experience of existing
students and ways as well as means to engage
the alumni to bring back their experience to the
campus is the primary goal of PES. Attracting
prospective and merited students to University
fold will be a serious exercise that everyone at
PES strives for. Organizing quiz events, science-
experiment competitions, meeting high school
students and making them to visit the University
are a few among many to attract incumbents.
Enhancing experience of existing students by
through specially designed special topics,
seminars, assignments, designing and
developing prototypes, industry internships,
encouraging to obtain international internships,
participation in competitions are few initiatives
that continually expose students to challenges
and problem solving and induce them to create,
share and apply and achieve results. Regular
Alumni contacts and fostering programs
involving them to mentor their juniors is yet
another initiative that is successfully practiced
in the University.
Processes - University implements the
following processes to enhance stakeholder
satisfaction:
Annual Report 2014
Campus Wide Quality Improvement
Program (CWQIP): This is about optimizing
teaching and learning methods across campus.
CWQIP works on three distinct fronts: (a) it sets
up systems for accountability and continuous
improvement in the classroom through supply
of course information, teacher evaluation and
progress monitoring; (b) it creates an
environment where each student is constantly
motivated to excel and reach greater heights by
offering incentives in the form of assistantships,
rank awards, distinction awards and
scholarships; and (c) it provides proactive
career management facilities that help students
find internships and permanent jobs through a
variety of channels;
Total Student Development Program
(TSDP): PES University believes that to be
leaders in the real world, the students must
develop intellectual breadth and creativity to
tackle the challenges of increasing complexity,
globalization and rapid change. The Total
Student Development Program focuses on every
aspect of student personality, helping them
develop interpersonal, technical and business
skills;
Gifted Student Development Program
(GSDP): This program envisages selection of
highly merited students and making them to
associate with faculty involved in research to
solve intricate problems and carryout research
projects of high quality;
Student Academic Support Program
(SASP): This program has been designed for
those students with learning difficulties. These
students will have the benefit of teaching &
guidance from experienced faculty, alumni as
well as senior students in identified difficult
subjects;
Student Teaching Assistantship Program
(STAP): Exceptional students are awarded
student assistantships and an opportunity to
work closely with their teachers, assisting them
with their research and teaching. This
experience helps students to perform better.
Community Development Program (CDP):
Under the program, select students would
engage in imparting education, promotion of
sanitation and hygiene among the down-
trodden children, indulge in National Service
Schemes and in environment protection in rural
areas.
Identity - The brand identity of PES has
improved, year after year, as multiple career
options (such as higher studies, placement in a
company, and entrepreneurship) have been set
out for students joining PES institutions.
Placements to all eligible students - has been the
focus of PES institutions. The quality
enhancement in scholastics has facilitated
achieving bigger and better placements to
students. Over 80 companies approach every
year to have PES students into their fold and the
brand of PES is gaining momentum in view of
outstanding performance of PES Alumni
working in these companies. The adoption of
government schools in the vicinity of the
University is another initiative that is building
the brand of PES. Industry on campus helps
easily accessible but highly productive initiative
that helps students and also builds the brand.
Research - PES University intends to attract
better quality faculty to be part of faculty team to
take forward the research agenda of the
University. This shall be supplemented by
forging relationships with reputed industries,
R&D organizations and international
universities. The relationships of PESIT with
Maastricht University-Netherlands, National
University of Singapore, Swansea University-
UK, Old Dominion University-USA, University of
Wyoming-USA, Dalhousie University-Canada,

and Siemens. UG student research is at high ebb
in the University, ably supported by highly
qualified faculty derived from both industry and
academia. Good number of impactful journal
publications, sponsored projects and consulting
assignments has been carried out by the faculty.
The University follows ART model for faculty in
the form of Administration, Research and
Teaching in the ratio of 40:40:20. The University
encourages and incentivizes all its teachers
engaged in research, innovation and patenting.
Infrastructure - The University shall
augment infrastructure on a continual basis to
meet the norms and standards of the regulatory
authorities as well as requirements of conducive
learning. PES University besides having highly

Annual Report 2014
eaching and research are the primary functions of the PESU faculty and
are nourished by efficient administration. Administration, Research, TTeaching (ART) — are essential features in the PESU programs and make
comparable demands on ability and devotion. When the performance of a faculty
member is appraised, consideration will be given to high achievement in any of
these areas, and the value of the faculty member's total contribution will be
measured not only by the extent and nature of his or her other activities, but also
the effectiveness with which they are pursued. The responsibilities of the faculty
members with respect to ART are:
Administration: Participation in the administration of the University and
departments, including serving as members on University / department
committees, planning of campus-wide functions, and contributing to
departmental administration, to the development of the junior staff, and to
interdisciplinary collaboration.
Research: Research in all forms carried out to advance knowledge, to develop its
practical applications, or to improve an art, and thus of immediate or ultimate
societal benefit; contributions to scholarship resulting from research and study,
including publication of books, articles, and reports; contributions to journals,
meetings, or other activities of professional organizations of such a nature as to
advance the profession.
Teaching: Teaching students happen in formal classes and laboratories, in
informal groups and conferences, and by collaboration on research projects.
Preparation for such teaching by keeping abreast of current developments and
studying ways to present subject matter more effectively and to improve
teaching skills; participation in curriculum development and in preparation of
laboratory manuals and other material written primarily for their value to
teaching; providing counseling, guidance, and example to students in relation
not only to their academic programs but also to their professional standards and
general welfare; participation in student life to aid students in broadening their
experience and in preparing them to be responsible citizens.

At PES University, research is an integral part of
higher education - it enriches all aspects of
teaching and learning in the PES curriculum. We
have several well-established research
laboratories and Centres of Excellence (CoEs)
associated with various departments, where
our faculty and students come together to
create and apply knowledge in building
solutions that engineer a better life. Students
and faculty are encouraged to question, deep-
dive into and push the barriers of research
actively, in their day-to-day lives.
Research is energized and driven through a set
of recognized domains. Many of these domains
are interdisciplinary, and each provides unique
research experiences and comprehensive
exposure to undergraduate as well as post
graduate students. Domains such as cloud
c o m p u t i n g , k n o w l e d g e a n a l y t i c s ,
environmental biology, composite materials
and satellite technology are aligned with the
University's vision of being a globally ranked
University by 2020.
Domain Research Centres
Departments at PES focus on conducting
research in their selected domains. Students
select and research a topic of interest within a
specific field. Knowledge sharing between
undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate
students ensures enhanced learning. The
outcome of the research translates into

OUR BRANDING
PES University placed seventh on the list of 'India's Most Trusted Educational Institutes – 2014-15'
As featured in The Hindu.
Only one educational institute in the State made
it to the list of top 10 most trusted institutes in
the country. PES University was placed seventh
in the list of 'India's Most Trusted Educational
Institutes – 2014-15', a study conducted by
brand analytics and insights company TRA
(formerly Trust Research Advisory).
Hindu College, New Delhi, was voted the most
trusted educational institute in the study
conducted among 7,710 respondents across 40
cities. The Indian Institute of Technology, New
Delhi, was ranked second, followed by Loyola
College, Chennai; Anna University, Chennai; and
Hansraj College, New Delhi. TRA's study came
up with more than 30,000 institutes of which
the top 1,000 are listed in the report.
The first school that made it to the list at
number six was Delhi Public School, New Delhi.
PES University stood at seventh position
followed by Ramjas College, New Delhi; DAV
School, New Delhi; and Agarwal Siksha Samiti,
Jaipur. A release said that for the research, each
of the respondents (comprising students,
parents and faculty) were asked over 700
questions, of which 582 were 'thinking'
questions directly related to the educational
institute itself.
The study yielded over seven million data
points on various aspects of the institutes over
20,000 hours of fieldwork. The report lists
India's 1,000 Most Trusted Educational
Institutes, India's top 200 institutes on
Academic Parameters and 120 of India's Most
Preferred Courses.
As for the 'Education Quotient' of a city (the
report says it is not necessarily a measure of the
education density, as the size of the city
automatically warrants a larger number of
institutes), the results, the study says, are
skewed in favour of the top ten best ranked hubs
in India which contribute 67.1 per cent of the
1 , 0 0 0 m o s t t r u s t e d i n s t i t u t e s . N e w
Delhi/Mumbai top the list (89 institutes each)
followed by Bangalore with 77 institutions.
Course preference-wise, each of the 7,710
respondents had to name five courses, a
specialization for each course, the name of the
institute which offered the specific course and
the city where the institute was located. A total
of 22,857 unique courses emerged from a total
of 38,550 responses to this question.
The preferred courses include commerce, IT,
engineering, arts and law. IT moved to the fifth
position (with nine per cent preference) in a list
topped by commerce (19 per cent of the
respondents choosing it), followed by
engineering (16 per cent), management (14 per
cent), arts (12 per cent), law (six per cent), and
medical and science (five per cent each).
