Preface

Hello, my name is Kyan Valipour. I am currently a graduate student at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. I will be graduating in May of 2019. I’m extremely excited about that!

My journey has had many ups and downs, as all of us have had. In the past, I believe that I switched majors about six to seven times my entire undergraduate career. Scary, huh? Well, I agree. I was one of those students who had no idea what to do as soon as I left high school. I often questioned myself. Should I work full-time, or should I go to college or university? I felt as if some of my friends went straight in to the workforce, and there were those who had already taken AP classes in high school and were ahead of the game. I was sort of in limbo. I was neither ahead, nor behind. I was just there. Let alone, I had no idea how to prepare for my college and university during the last of my high school years.

I started out by taking everyone’s advice on what to do when graduating high school. What did they say again? Ah, yes, take your basic courses once you go to college and get it out of the way. You will get an idea of what your major will be once you start taking some classes. That is what electives are for!

Well, let me tell you. Their advice helped me somewhat, but not entirely. It took me a while to understand what was right for me. Don’t get me wrong, I did seek advice from academic advisors and career counselors in my colleges, but that didn’t do the trick. It only helped me think of things in a more intense manner. Yes, I did say colleges, by the way. I did make that plural on purpose. I went to three different community colleges! You are probably wondering why I went to so many.

Basically, long story short, I started my journey at Collin College, taking my basics. I then had this strong urge to pursue the medical field in Brookhaven College, but it wasn’t for me. I thought to myself, maybe I chose the wrong program within the medical field? So, I went to a different medical program in El Centro College in Downtown Dallas. Right then and there, I had decided that the medical field was not for me for whatever reasons. So, I went back to Collin College to pursue a career in music because I had this crazy idea that since I played the tuba in middle school all throughout high school, I may be musically inclined to become a musician. I was wrong about that. I then tried computer programming,

5

Page 6: Preface - kyanvalipour.comkyanvalipour.com/assets/files/Dream Big and Achieve Your Goal…  · Web viewCloud 6—Learning About Yourself22. Cloud 7—Researching Majors and Career

but that was also not for me. I was burnt out of ideas. I thought to myself, maybe college is not for me.

I had given up hope at the time. I had to take a semester off to gather my thoughts on what to do. I remember spending countless nights awake, trying to figure out what to do. I was thankful to have a supportive mother and uncle that wanted me to finish my education, or else I would not have made it to where I am today. After much research, I came across Office Systems Technology at Collin College. I found something that I had actually enjoyed doing, and still do today. This program focused on primarily administrative duties. I graduated Collin College in 2014, and found out that the University of North Texas offered a Bachelor’s degree to my workforce program. So, I applied and had got automatic entrance due to my Associates of Applied Science degree. I had entered to a program called Applied Technology and Performance Improvement. In a nutshell, this program showed me how to use technology to make a business more efficient, as well as other useful skills. The best part was that it was all online!

I recently graduated in December of 2016, and I am truly blessed and happy with what I have chosen as my career. As cliché as this may sound, it only took hard work, dedication, and not giving up to do this. I know that there are many people out there who have recently graduated high school or are currently in the process of finishing up, and feel like a deer caught in headlights. I am here to help you. I know there are some out there that are not as fortunate to have parents to support them as I did. Also, those who are older than I am and want to return back to college or university to finish up. I am here for you guys.

I will give you the strategies and tips that helped me progress in my education. I will give you this formula so that you can become successful. I know that I am on cloud 9, so why don’t you come and join me on this journey there?

Getting Started

In order to be successful in the following training modules, you will need to download a free QR Code Reader from either the Apple Store or the Google Play Store. There are many that are for free on the mobile market. We will be using QR Codes throughout several of the modules to bring up either a webpage, blog, PDF, or video on YouTube. Be sure to be in a location that will allow you to use WiFi. This way you will not be using mobile data on your phone.

If you have never used a QR Code Reader before, let me explain how it works. Basically, once you download the QR Code Reader of your choice from the mobile marketplace, you are able to scan the code on the document by waving your phone in front of the code using the app. Once you have scanned it, the application should redirect you to correct location, or you may need to press the download button on the application.

For example, let’s do a practice scan! Please can the QR Code below using your QR Code Reader:

It should read, “Welcome to Cloud 9” when opening the PDF file.

Cloud 1—Making a Decision

1.0 Learning Goal 1:

Once you complete this module, you will be able to make a decision on what job opportunity you will be pursuing based on your current living situation.

Learning Objectives:

1.1 Learners will understand the meaning of the word, Empowerment1.2 Learners will have knowledge of budgeting application resources1.3 Learners will know what to do and what not to do with Financial Aid1.4 Learners will be able to identify ways to save money1.5 Learners will be able to decide on an entry-level job opportunity1.6 Learners will be able to decide on whether to become full-time or part-

time for both work and school

It is often difficult whether you would like to pursue a full-time or part-time job opportunity as soon as you finish high school. Ultimately, the decision is up to you. Some people choose to work full-time, meanwhile taking full-time or part-time classes. There are some people who choose to work part-time, meanwhile taking full-time classes. Then there are some that choose to just work full-time and not pursue an educational career. This is perfectly fine too, but I regret to inform you that this e-book may not be for you. Although, you may find some useful life changing information that even you can take into consideration.

It all depends on you. You need to think about what is happening in your life right now. Do not let others influence your gut feeling on what you feel is the right amount of workload that you can handle. Some may suggest that you do it a certain way because that is what worked for them, but what works for someone else may not work for you. Empower yourself to make the right choices. What is empowerment you ask? Basically, what that means is being able to make the right choices based on your current situation. Life will always present you with unexpected scenarios, but it is up to you to make a wise decision on what is best.

Task:

On a blank sheet of paper, write down your current living situation.

Do you have a family to support? Do you live on your own or with parents?

How do you plan on handling a job and school at the same time? Do you plan on working part-time or full-time during college/university? Why?

I understand that you are now just exiting high school. This means budgeting and saving up money as much as you can. Don’t fall for the student loan death trap! See if you can find ways to cut back. Just because you have some sort of financial aid assistance does not mean that you should spend that money. This money is money that you need to pay back. THIS IS NOT YOUR MONEY—Plain and simple. It is there if you need it for school expenses, but that is it.

Since you are now just out of high school, a good way to cut back would be making smart decisions on what you spend your money on. For example, do not go buy the latest gaming console because you see that the school accepted your financial aid loan. This is a no no. The more you spend, the longer it will take to pay back in the future.

Another good way to cut back is if you are working part-time and under the age of 26, you can still get health insurance through your parents. I understand that health insurance at the moment is ridiculously expensive for a student, especially if you’re only working part-time hours. Therefore, this would be the best solution for now. If you have a full-time job, you will more than likely have the offer of health

11

Page 12: Preface - kyanvalipour.comkyanvalipour.com/assets/files/Dream Big and Achieve Your Goal…  · Web viewCloud 6—Learning About Yourself22. Cloud 7—Researching Majors and Career

insurance there. Both of these ways are good ways to avoid buying health insurance directly from the health insurance company.

Another thing that I would like to point out is not to be lazy. If you have the option to pack your lunch or dinner, do it! I’m not saying to not eat lunch and dinner at restaurants anymore, but limit yourself to how much you spend outside. Learn how to budget! Most people nowadays have a mobile phone. So, here is a great website to find a mobile app for budgeting (Smith, 2017):

http://www.gottabemobile.com/best-budget-apps/

You can download any of these that are listed on the list within your mobile app store. I’m sure that the next thing you know, you’ll be saving so much money! That doesn’t mean you should spend any of it, though! It is important to save some money for an emergency fund. Emergency funds can be useful in the case that your car ever breaks down, or an unexpected medical bill for an unexpected accident.

When you do decide whether to work full-time or part-time, you will need to know how to balance your classes, work, social and private life. This requires some time management skills. Please continue your journey and jump on Cloud 2.

Cloud 2—Time Management

1.0 Learning Goal 1:

When the learner completes this module, the learner will be able to effectively use time management skills.

Learning Objectives:

1.1 Learning how to track their time1.2 Learning how to prioritize what needs to be done1.3 Utilizing resources to aid in tracking time1.4 Learning how to balance school, work, social and private life1.5 Learning the 80/20 Rule1.6 Demonstrate the ability to plan, track time, and record their activity

Time management is an important skill to learn in life. If you don’t manage your time wisely, you may end up hurting yourself more than anything. Everyone is usually busy doing something. Whether it may be school, work, social or private life. Finding the right balance is necessary, and also prioritizing what should be done first is key. Part of that is knowing your current schedule, and knowing how to fit in certain activities within that schedule. For example, you cannot avoid missing work once you have a job. So, that is unavoidable and is something that is set in your schedule. If you are a traditional student, you cannot miss a class or you will fall behind. Therefore, that is also something that is permanent on your schedule (or at least until the semester is over). If you are an online student, you will still need to manage your time by setting time aside to read the instructions, material, and to do the assignments. The rest of your time is up to you and how you manage it.

There are several ways to keep track of how you manage your time:

1. Write it down: Grab a sheet a paper and write down what you need to do for the day/week/month. Keep an idea of what needs to be done to meet deadlines.

2. Buy a Calendar: If you are a visual type of person, grab a calendar and write down what needs to be done on the dates that they are due.

13

Page 14: Preface - kyanvalipour.comkyanvalipour.com/assets/files/Dream Big and Achieve Your Goal…  · Web viewCloud 6—Learning About Yourself22. Cloud 7—Researching Majors and Career

3. Digital Reminders: If you prefer writing down on your desktop/laptop/mobile device, you can set your settings so that the device reminds you when to do the task. There are also neat products out on the market today that can take note when you are doing something. Such as, the Amazon Echo.

These are just some options that you have to manage your time. I am sure there are more ways. Some people have worked out a system of their own on reminding themselves when something is due. Keep in mind you should do whatever works best for you. If you have your own way of doing something, by all means, do it!

Everyone has a social or private life. Unfortunately, sometimes they need to be put off to the side to study or complete a task that needs to be done. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have any fun. It is important to keep in mind that you have deadlines to meet first, though.

Please scan the QR Code using the QR Code Reader to watch the video and read the material on the webpage:

Task: Sit down and plan what needs to be done this week. This can be school assignments, work, or any activities. Prioritize what needs to be done, and set yourself a deadline to finish it.

For this entire week, I would like you to keep track of everything that you do using any method listed above, or your own personal way. Keep record of the things that you do throughout your day.

For example: Today I woke up at 9:00 a.m. Then I ate breakfast at 9:30 a.m.

14

Page 15: Preface - kyanvalipour.comkyanvalipour.com/assets/files/Dream Big and Achieve Your Goal…  · Web viewCloud 6—Learning About Yourself22. Cloud 7—Researching Majors and Career

Once you are done keeping track of the things you do for one week, I would like you to write a one page paper describing how things went. Did you stick to your plan for the week, or was it a little off? What went well, and what can you improve on when it comes to your time management skills?

Cloud 3—Organization Skills

1.0 Learning Goal 1:

When the learner completes this module, the learner will be able to organize their material for an easier retrieval.

Learning Objectives:

1.1 Learn different ways to be organized1.2 Learn useful tips to be well-organized1.3 Learn how organization affects you in life (school, work, etc.)1.4 Demonstrate ways to become well-organized1.5 Demonstrate ways to become more organized on technology

So, how are your organization skills? Are they up to par, or do you have trouble finding things when you need them? If you would like to reach Cloud 9, you must learn to be organized. It is an essential skill to have not only for college and university, but for life. Can you imagine not knowing where you put important pieces of information when you need them?

There are times when you do not need papers or digital files anymore, and they are just in the way. Make sure that you don’t need them, and get rid of them! All of these extra things are clutter and a possible distraction. This can slow you down on retrieving the information you need.

Please use the QR Code below to bring up the webpage with a video:

16

Page 17: Preface - kyanvalipour.comkyanvalipour.com/assets/files/Dream Big and Achieve Your Goal…  · Web viewCloud 6—Learning About Yourself22. Cloud 7—Researching Majors and Career

Once you have developed a good way of keeping organized, life will be much simpler for you. You will feel less stressed out. This will help you on your preparation to finding the right major, and college/university for you.

Task:Part I.

What I would like you to do is find three ways that you can improve your organization skills. Please list them, and for each one describe what you did to become more organized.

Part II.

Go on your desktop, laptop, or mobile device. Take a screenshot of what it currently looks like. Find some digital files that are out of place, or not needed anymore. Move them around and delete some files if necessary. Take a screenshot of the organized version. How does it look? How do you feel about it?

This concludes Cloud 3—Organization Skills. Please continue your journey upwards onto Cloud 4—Preparation.

Cloud 4—Preparation

1.0 Learning Goal 1:

Upon completion of this module entitled Cloud 4—Preparation, the learner will have an understanding of how to be prepared for college or university.

Learning Objectives:

1.1 Learn different ways to be well-prepared1.2 Learn how being well-prepared can affect your life1.3 Learn about how different resources can be beneficial1.4 Demonstrate initiative on preparing for college or university1.5 Demonstrate the ability to set a schedule and plan ahead

When you are preparing for college and university, you need to so many things at once. It is important to consider the previous modules to help you become well-organized, and also to manage your time more effectively. I’m sure that high school right now is throwing so much information at you at once. They are trying to help you prepare as well, which is great! Just be sure to keep in mind that you organize that information, as well set time aside for those activities that they mention.

Preparation can start as early as your freshman or sophomore year of high school. The earlier you start, the better off you will be in the long-run. Those who procrastinate until the last minute will struggle. I know that for a fact, because I was one of those people.

Cloud 5—Meditation and Focus: Method of Loci

1.0 Learning Goal 1:

Upon completion of this module entitled Cloud 5—Meditation and Focus: Method of Loci, the learner will be able to regain focus, and also become more productive by utilizing Method of Loci.

Learning Objectives:

1.1 Learner will have knowledge of how breathing exercises can be beneficial to them

1.2 Learner will have knowledge of how a meditation exercise can be beneficial to them

1.3 Learner will have an understanding of Method of Loci1.4 Learner will be able to demonstrate Method of Loci

Breathing exercises can be helpful towards your journey up to Cloud 9. Let me explain why. Sometimes taking a moment to just pause and breathe can help you regain focus. There are other benefits as well. In Harvard researcher Herbert Benson’s “The Relaxation Response,” research shows that short periods of meditation, using breathing as a focus, could alter the body’s stress response (2010). If you are stressed about something, take a deep breath and relax for a bit. It is your body telling you that you need a break. Do not take a long break and lose focus of your goals, though!

Take a moment to meditate. Some research suggests that meditation may physically change the brain and body and could potentially help to improve many health problems and promote healthy behaviors (n.d.).

Step 1: Find a quiet area with absolutely no noise

Step 2: Sit down cross-legged and close your eyes

Step 3: Clear your mind from any thoughts of things you need to do

Step 4: Enjoy the quiet time to yourself

Step 5: Take a slow and deep breath in, and slowly exhale out

Cloud 6—Learning About Yourself

1.0 Learning Goal:

Upon completion of this module, the learner will be able to identify what type of learner they are, as well as any strengths and opportunities they possess.

Learning Objectives:

1.1 Identify the different types of learners1.2 Learn how study habits can be improved with the type of learner you are

with an open-mind1.3 Identify strengths and opportunities the learner possesses

In order to know what type of learner you are, you need to know about the different types of ways people can learn. There are several different modalities to consider. For example, there are visual, aural/auditory, read/write, kinesthetic, and even a mixture of these modalities. Knowing the type of learner that you are will help you in the long-run, because it will help you develop excellent study habits. Also, knowing the type of learner you are will help you seek the right major and career field to pursue.

People sometimes know instinctively what type of learner they are, but in case you do not know, please scan the QR Code below to watch a video and read additional material on the webpage:

Task:In the t-chart provided below, I would like you to list your strengths and opportunities that you know about yourself. For example, I am good at administrative duties (Strength), but I am not too good at technical stuff such as coding (opportunity). Try to list as many strengths and opportunities as you can, but do at least 10 each.

This task will help you realize what you’re good at doing, and what you may need opportunity to learn. Once you see all of the strengths and opportunities, it will be easier deciding which major/career field to pursue.

Cloud 7—Researching Majors and Career Fields

In this module, we will be researching possible majors and career fields based on what you found out about yourself in the previous module. We will be taking a look at how the type of learner you are, as well as the strengths and opportunities you’ve listed, will affect your career choice. Don’t get me wrong, you can be anything that you want to be in life! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! This is just something that will give you a push in the right direction if you’re feeling lost.

Once you have narrowed it down to a few career choices, you will take a look at each one and research what it takes to make it in the field. You will also be seeing how your entry-level job can play role in your career.

1.0 Learning Goal:

Upon completion of this module, the learner will be able to make a decision on which major to pursue, as well as which career field.

Learning Objectives:

1.1 Demonstrate the ability to conduct research on different majors1.2 Learn how to narrow down results to choose a fitting major1.3 Learn how to choose a fitting career and what it takes to be in that field1.4 Learn how your entry-level job plays a role

We will start out by conducting a research on which degree is best for you. Take a look at what you wrote down in the previous module within the t-chart. Ask yourself this:

What are my strengths? What do I need to improve on? Do I enjoy learning about this subject? Am I naturally a fit for this subject?

Based on those questions, which major appeals to you the most? Write down as many majors that you think will be fitting for you. Once you have a list of those majors, go through that list and ask yourself:

Do I see myself doing this in the future? Am I passionate about this subject?

25

Page 26: Preface - kyanvalipour.comkyanvalipour.com/assets/files/Dream Big and Achieve Your Goal…  · Web viewCloud 6—Learning About Yourself22. Cloud 7—Researching Majors and Career

Will I lose interest in this subject? What are my career options with this subject? What can I do for a living with this subject? How far down the line do I need to go as far as my education goes?

Most degrees have a point where the learner is satisfied in stopping. For example, people who are interested in the medical field. Some of these programs require you apply in order to get in the program, but they are great programs, nonetheless! If you are able to enter to a medical program, some community colleges offer workforce programs which are only 2-year degrees. These are for those who want to finish their education quickly.

There are also majors which take time to pursue. For instance, if you are looking to major in psychology. I have the upmost respect for those with a degree in psychology. Not only is the subject difficult to study, but the education requires at least a graduate level education in order to land a job within that field. I am not trying to deter you from the subject of psychology. Of course, the difficulty on the subject is only a matter of my opinion. As far as the length of the subject, please be aware that there is a higher chance to be in a career if you pursue your graduate degree. 1.0 Learning Goal:

Upon completion of this module, the learner will be able to make a decision on a college or university by conducting research.

Learning Objectives:

1.1 Demonstrate the ability to conduct research1.2 Identify pros and cons of possible college or university choice1.3 Learn the benefits of community colleges1.4 Demonstrate the ability to make a decision on a college or university

based on research

There is this common misconception that community college are for people who did not do well in their SAT/ACT. You may think that community colleges do not have the campus resources, organizations, or campus life compared to a university you may have in mind but, many community colleges excellent programs that are little to no cost to the student.

Some important things to consider when making a decision of which college or university you may go:

How much does one credit hour cost? Three credit hours? Do they have a good reputation for the major and career field that I chose? How is campus life there? What sort of resources do they have on campus? What type of organizations and clubs do they have? Will I be able to afford it, and will I need a loan? What kind of scores do I need to get admitted to this college or university?

All of these questions are valid questions to ask when considering a college or university. Many people make the mistake of not doing research beforehand. Do not base your decision solely on how reputable the school is to everyone else. This is your future you are thinking about!

1.1 Learn different financial aid terminology and how it applies1.2 Learn resources to visit1.3 Learn about deadlines1.4 Learn how the admissions process works

Feeling confident and secure right about now, right? I am glad to hear that! This is the final cloud, Cloud 9! You’ve made it! Congratulations!

There are a few last steps in order to achieve your goals on cloud 9. In order to be successful in your transition from high school to college/university, you must know how to apply to financial aid and register to classes.

Financial Aid

There is certain terminology that you will have to know when applying to fafsa.gov:

Expected Family Contribution (EFC): This is used to calculate how much you can afford to pay for college.

Cost of Attendance (COA): There are many factors that contribute to the COA. Such as, tuition, fees, room and board, expenses estimate, travel estimate, and books/supplies.

Basically, in order to determine how much financial aid you will be needing, financial aid staff will subtract the EFC from the COA.

Usually the college or university of choice will have an internal financial aid page in which you can visit and see your financial aid package. Within the financial aid package, you can have:

Grants and Scholarships – These is money that you do not need to pay back to the college/university. Keep in mind of all the rules that come along with grants and scholarships, though. For instance, there is a limit of how much money you get until you exhaust your grant funding. Also, some colleges and universities do not give you a grant if you exceed a certain number of credit hours.

Student Loans – Subsidized and Unsubsidized. Subsidized loans are loans that you have to pay back, but the interest will not take effect until 6 months after you graduate or leave college/university. Unsubsidized loans are loans that you have to pay back as well, but the interest will take effect while you are in school. You do not need to start paying back the unsubsidized loan until 6 months after you graduate or drop out of college/university.

Federal Work-study – this provides part-time jobs while you are in school, and allows you to earn money. Usually the jobs are related to community work, or something within education.

Registering for College or University

Usually colleges and universities offer a checklist of what needs to be done in order to be registered. Admissions can be a tedious task to do, but with patience it can be done.

Most colleges and universities have their expectations of the admissions process on their website. Each college and university is different. So, this is why it is important to research!

If you are having trouble understanding the instructions on how to register on their website, be sure to visit the campus and talk to a representative. They will be able to offer you a better understanding of what to do.

This is why it is important to be organized! At a time like this, it is imperative that you have all the paperwork together and ready to go. So, this way you can easily access it when necessary. Although, most of the paperwork is non-existent nowadays due to everything being electronic. This doesn’t mean that you should not be organized, though!
