Abstract

The study investigated Philippine Normal University Admission Test and College Grade Point Average as predictors of graduates performance in the licensures examination for teachers. Specifically, the study aims to determine the performance of graduates in the licensure examination for teachers in terms of passing percentage in the areas of general education, professional education and major subject areas when grouped by majors. Correlational-predictive method of research was used to determine whether or not Philippine Normal University Admission Test and College Grade Point Average predict performance of graduates in the licensure examination for teachers. To determine performance of graduates in terms of passing percentage, frequency and percent was used while the mean was used to determine the level of performance in the admission test and Grade Point Average of the graduates. However, to determine whether or not admission test performance and Grade Point Average can predict performance in the licensure examination, multiple regression analysis was used. Results of the study show that of the 43 graduates who took the licensure examination for teachers 33 or 76.7% of them passed the examination while 10 or 23.3% of them failed. Result reveals that a large number or percentage of passers was on general education followed by majoring and professional education. Results also show that the level of performance of the graduates in the admission test and achievement in general education, professional education, and major subjects when grouped by majors is average. However, social science major students have high achievement in professional education. On the other hand when majoring was considered, only mathematics major graduates obtained an average performance, the rest of the majors have high level of achievement. Furthermore, it was revealed in this study, that Philippine Normal University Admission Test and College Grade Point Average predict significantly performance of graduates in the licensure examination. These findings conclude that graduates in the secondary education perform better in the licensure examination. The study also concludes that professional education and major subjects were areas in the licensure examination graduates find difficulty. Likewise, the study concludes that Philippine Normal University Admission Test performance and College Grade Point Average are good predictors of graduates performance in the licensure examination for teachers. This study, therefore recommends that strict compliance of conducting entrance examination should be given importance by the university. Likewise, it is recommended that students should pay equal attention to general education, professional, and major subjects.
