Elijah recognized the voice of God not in the strong and heavy wind, not in the earthquake, and not in the fire, but in a tiny whispering sound. May we find enough quiet in our clamorous world to hear His voice and discern what He is calling us to do and be.

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME—AUGUST 9, 2020

Remedy for endurance during storms in our life: In the middle of a dark winter's night in a small Mid-west farming community, the two-story home of a young family caught fire. Quickly, parents and children followed their well-practiced emergency plan and made their way through the smoke-filled home out into the front yard. There the father quickly counted heads and realized that their 5-year-old son was not among them. Suddenly he heard a wail and looked up to see the boy in his bedroom window, crying and rubbing his eyes. Knowing the danger of reentering the house to rescue his son, the father called, "Jump, Son! I'll catch you!" Between sobs, the boy responded to the voice he knew so well. "But I can't see you, Daddy!" The father answered with great assurance. "No, Son, you can't see me, but I can see

you! Jump!" At that, the boy jumped into the smoky darkness and found himself safely cradled in his father's arms. Our Scripture readings for today are about trusting – about having Faith – about being able to discern the fact that our God is always with us, even in storms of life. We all need to call Jesus in the storms facing us in our lives. We need to realize that it is the presence of Jesus which gives us peace even in the wildest storms of life: the storms of anxiety and worries about the future we are suffering now in the ongoing Corona Virus Pandemic (Corvid-19), storms of sorrow, storms of doubt, tension and uncertainty, storms of anger and despair, storms of temptations, and storms in family relationships. But this peace flows only from a personal relationship with God, with Jesus, enhanced through prayer, meditative read-ing of Scripture, and active participation in the Holy Mass and reception of the Sacraments when these are available to us.

God sometimes whispers: There is a story told about a young man and an old preacher. The young man had lost his job and didn't know which way to turn. So he went to see the old preacher. Pacing about the preacher's study, the young man ranted about his problem. Finally, he clenched his fist and shouted, "I've begged God to say something to help me. Tell me, Preacher, why doesn't God answer?" The old preacher, who sat across the room, spoke something in reply – something so hushed, it was indistinguishable. The young man stepped across the room. "What did you say?" he asked. The preacher repeated himself, but again in a tone as soft as a whisper. So, the young man moved closer until he was leaning on the preacher's chair. "Sorry," he said. "I still didn't hear you." With their heads bent together, the old preacher spoke once more. "God sometimes whispers," he said, "so that we will move closer to hear Him." This time the young man heard, and he understood. We all want God's voice to thunder through the air with the answer to our problem. But God's is the still, small voice… the gentle whisper. Perhaps there's a reason. Nothing draws human focus quite like a whisper. God's whisper means I must stop my ranting and move close to Him until my head is bent together with His. Then, as I listen, I will find my answer. Better still, I find myself closer to God.

Feast of Assumption: Jesus is walking around Heaven one day, and notices several people on the Heavenly streets who shouldn't be there. He finds St. Peter at the gate and says to him, "Peter, you've been remiss in your duties. You're letting in the wrong sort of people." "Don't blame me, Lord," replies Peter. "I turn them away just like You said to. Then they go around to the back door and your mother lets them in." On August 15, we celebrate the feast of the As-sumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, which commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay—a foretaste of our bodily resurrection at the end of time. Belief in the Assumption of Mary flows immediately from the belief in her Immaculate Conception-- if Mary was preserved from sin by the gift of God, she would not be bound to experience the consequences of sin--death--in the same way we do. Since the feast falls on a Saturday this year it is not a holiday of obligation. As we celebrate this feast let us continue to seek the intercession of our heavenly mother. Familiar story. In one of his books, Mark Twain recalls a visit to the Holy Land and a stay in Capernaum. It was a moonlit night, so he decided to take his wife on a romantic boat ride on the Sea of Galilee. Twain asked a man in a row-boat how much he would charge to take them out on the water. The man saw Twain's white suit, white shoes, and white hat and supposed he was a rich Texan. So, he said the cost would be fifty dollars. Twain walked away as he said, "Now I know why Jesus walked on water." God's blessings Fr. Suneesh Mathew Psalm 16: You Are My Inheritance O Lord
