Trent & Dove Methodist Circuit (22/16) Preaching Plan for Sept – Nov 2018 Dear friends, And so, we begin another Methodist year with all of its hopes and expectations, and as we do so I am reminded of the words of Paul in Acts 26:6 "Today I am standing trial because of the hope of the promise God gave our ancestors." He goes onto describe that hope as hope gained through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We live as followers of Jesus; we have his resurrection hope in our lives and so we enter another year not downhearted but expectant. Expectant that God will bring new ways, new creativity and new ideas to reach out to those who, as yet, don’t fully know him, but the question we must all ask ourselves is "do we want God to act in new ways?" In our Circuit Revd Helen will be joining us with her experience and all the gifts that God has given her, a new lay worker will (hopefully) be appointed to cover the Uttoxeter/Stubwood part of the circuit and will bring his or her skills to bear. I will be taking pastoral charge with Revd Stella for Etwall, Hilton and Hatton and as Stella and I have very different personalities it will bring a new richness to the section. Hopefully it will lead us towards a greater sense of circuit team ministry in the long run. I will also be taking over at Winshill and that will be another fresh start. Once again, we can speak of a year of potential, and of God-given opportunity, but it will be a year wasted if we aren't prepared to seize the opportunity God provides to see things in a different way. We need to lose our sense of "it’s not Church unless we have pews or chairs in straight lines, unless we sing the old hymns on an organ from hymn books" We even need to lose our sense of the five-hymn sandwich many of us grew up with and were trained in. Perhaps we even need to lose our buildings themselves and re-open our fellowships in new venues, schools, community centres etc. Like it or lump it fresh expressions of Church are the growth area within our circuit. New ideas such as using a church for a village shop, messy church, cafe church, toddler groups are wonderful, and potential is rife for growth. Trouble is in order to encourage more of this it will involve some folk giving up their current activity and following where God has shown them in new ways. For this reason, I wish to initiate a 360-degree listening course (which I've run before) possibly in a couple of venues over the autumn period. This will involve listening in three ways, 1) to the neighbourhood, 2) to Church tradition and 3) to God. At the moment, I’m writing this from holiday and need to get my head together with Caroline and the rest of the staff to see when is possible, but in the meantime, I encourage you all to pray for a renewed work within your particular fellowship and area. John Wesley was greatly encouraged by the importance of prayer (as he experienced it in the Moravian community) and so should we be. Finally, a great big Trent and Dove welcome to Revd Helen as she joins us. Be gentle with her as she learns her way around her section and the circuit. Be patient as she tries to understand new ways of working and give the rest of us an opportunity to learn from all that she brings. Be helpful over questions she will have about the area and try to be gracious as she learns how much better Burton Albion are than her beloved Arsenal!! Helen, you are most welcome, and we look forward to working with you. Mike

Trent & Dove Methodist Circuit (22/16) Preaching Plan for Sept – Nov 2018

Dear friends, And so, we begin another Methodist year with all of its hopes and expectations, and as we do so I am reminded of the words of Paul in Acts 26:6 "Today I am standing trial because of the hope of the promise God gave our ancestors." He goes onto describe that hope as hope gained through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
