We produce a full range of roofingbattens and accessories including thedesign of roofing battens suitable fromcentres in excess of the standard450mm or 600mm. Using our ownproduction facility, we offer a rangefrom 6mm x 25mm plaster lathsthrough 47mm and 75mm thickc16/c24 graded carcassing, includingarris rails, tilt and angle fillets, lead andzinc roll fascia. We can also offer a fullrange of timber treatments.

TREATMENT

The battens are treated with a specificallydeveloped micro emulsion treatment usingstate of the art treatment processes; fullycompliant with BS8417:2003.The netresult of this process is that we canguarantee each batten for 60 yearsagainst wood rotting fungi and insectattack.This is a clear treatment to whichwe add a red pigment; this colourationcan fade over time but this fading has noeffect on the warranties or theeffectiveness of the treatment.

The red colour confirms that eachindividual batten has been assessed andgraded and complies with BS5534:2003.

ENVIRONMENT

John Brash has a strict environmentalpolicy and is both FSC and PEFC certified.All is from either PEFC(Programme for the Endorsement ofForest Certification Schemes) or FSC(Forest Stewardship Council) certifiedforests.These two world leading bodiesensure that the forests and theirenvironments are sustainably managed and the logs legally sourced.

Timber is sourced from the leading forestproduct manufacturers across the wholeof Europe.

Important Information.

• Do not burn preserved wood.

• Wear a dust mask and goggles when cuttingor sanding wood.

• Wear gloves when working with wood.Some pigment may rub off onto the skin.This washes off easily.

• Some preservative may migrate from thetreated wood into soil/water or may dislodgefrom the treated wood surface upon contactwith skin.Wash exposed skin areasthoroughly.

• The red colour is a pigment not apreservative.This is fixed to the timber anddoes not wash off. Some surface deposits ofpigment may rub off.This is easily washed off.

• All sawdust and construction debris should becleaned up and disposed of after construction.

• Wash work clothes separately from otherhousehold clothing before re-use.

• Preserved wood should not be used where itmay come into direct contact or indirectcontact with drinking water, except for usesinvolving incidental contact such as fresh waterdocks and bridges.

• Do not use preserved wood undercircumstances where the preservative maybecome a component of food, animal feed,or beehives.

• Do not use preserved wood for mulch.

• Only preserved wood that is visibly clean andfree of surface residue should be used.

• Use fixings, hardware or any metal productsas recommended by their manufacturer.

• If wood is to be used in an interior applicationand becomes wet during construction, itshould be allowed to dry before beingcovered or enclosed.

• Disposal Recommendations: Preserved woodmay be disposed of in landfills or burned incommercial or industrial incinerators orboilers in accordance with National andRegional regulations.

• If you want to apply a finish to yourpreservative treated wood, we recommend useof oil-based penetrating finishes that are

transparent or semi-transparent. Some clearwater repellents and semi-transparent stains can be applied to treated wood soon afterconstruction.We do not recommend usingpaint or other film-forming finishes becauselong term maintenance of these finishes canbe problematic.Whatever finish you use,always check the label of the finishing product and follow the manufacturer’sinstructions.Apply the finishing product to asmall exposed test area of your projectbefore finishing the entire project to ensure it provides the intended result beforeproceeding.

• Use fixings and other hardware which are incompliance with building regulations for theintended use.

• Mould growth can and does occur on thesurface of many products, including treated oruntreated wood, during prolonged surfaceexposure to excessive moisture conditions.To remove mould from treated wood surfaces,wood should be allowed to dry.Typically, mildsoap and water can be used to removesurface mould.

• Cross cut battens ends: It is recommended thatcut batten ends at the verge should betreated with a suitable preservative approvedfor this purpose.The most practical and safeway of meeting this is to rotate the battenalong its length so that the cut end is insidethe roof and the fully treated end is at theverge.This negates the need to carry up andpaint /dip batten with a preservative whilston the roof. Cut batten ends within the roofdo not require further treatment

• If cutting cannot be avoided, then precautionsshould be taken to keep airbourne dustlevels below Occupational ExposureStandards for wood dust. In particular, avoidinhalation of dust when using high speedcross-cut saws or mechanical sanders.

STORAGE:Roofing Battens can be safely

stored outdoors.The battens will weather butthis does not affect their life span.The redcolour will fade over time.This has nodetriment to the product as the colour is apigment for identification and does notrepresent the treatment.

Battens should be safely stacked.

a Tolerances on the basic sizes of timber batten should be width +/- 3mm, depth -0/+ 3mm,based on measurement at a reference moisture content of 20%.

b These minimum sizes do not apply to batten used to support ridges, hips and valleys.

c Batten sizes for other slates, tiles and shingles, such as cedar shingles and shakes and metaltiles, or other proprietary roofing products, should be in accordance with themanufacturers’ recommendations.

WHAT IS PROTIM CLEARCHOICE PRESERVED WOOD?Protim Clearchoice preserved wood has been preserved by the correct application ofProtim Clearchoice wood preservative and then allowed to dry.

Properly treated Protim Clearchoice preserved wood is suitable for roof timbers, timber framing,carcassing and internal and external timber projects that are above damp proof course / groundlevel. For use on wood out of ground contact or out of surface water contact.Timbers exposedto weathering should be given the additional protection of a well-maintained surface finish.

Q. DO PROTIM CLEARCHOICE BATTENS COMPLY WITH STANDARDS?Protim Clearchoice products comply with the relevant British and European Standardsincluding BS8417:2003.

Q. WHAT IS THE SERVICE LIFE OF PROTIM CLEARCHOICE BATTENS?Formulations developed as alternatives to CCA are applied in accordance with the recentEuropean Standards regime, rather than by using the more traditional British Standardscriteria.The following Desired Service Life categories from the new BS8417:2003 thereforeapply to Protim Clearchoice battens -

• Components in Hazard Class 1 & 2 60 years

Timber battens have to meet hazard class 2, defined as above ground, covered, withoccasional risk of wetting. Protim treated roofing battens are treated to hazardclass 1&2 as recommended in BS5534:2003.

Q. WHAT IS THE SERVICE LIFE OF A ROOF BATTEN?battens are treated to hazard class 2 to give a 60 year service life.

Q. IS THE RED COLOUR ONLY ON THE EDGES?The red is a pigmentation, Protim Clearchoice is a clear micro emulsion that complies withBS8417:2003.

Q. WHAT HAPPENS IF THE BATTENS ARE CUT?Typically any treated timber that is cross cut should be sealed with an appropriatetreatment. BS5534:2003 states it is recommended that cut batten ends at the vergeshould be treated with a suitable preservative approved for this purpose.The mostpractical and safe way of meeting this is to rotate the batten along its length so that thecut end is inside the roof and the fully treated end is at the verge.This negates the needto carry up and paint / dip batten with a preservative whilst on the roof. Cut batten endswithin the roof do not require further treatment.

Q. CAN BE USED FOR OTHER APPLICATIONS?If a treatment is used outdoors or exposed to the weather it should have a suitable sealant.It is not suitable for ground contact. It is suitable for other hazard class 1 & 2 end uses.

Q. CAN PROTIM CLEARCHOICE BE USED WHERE BATS MAY BE PRESENT?Bats are protected by law, any work that may affect a bat roost must be approved beforehandby Natural England (formerly English Nature) or national equivalent. Of the preservativescurrently HSE approved for pre-treatment use, there are no restrictions on the preservativewhich may have been applied to pre-treated timber prior to its introduction into a bat roost.

FIXING RECOMMENDATIONS

Certain metal products (including fasteners, hardware and flashings) may corrode when indirect contact with wood exposed to water. Use fixings and other hardware which are incompliance with building regulations for the intended use. Use fixings, hardware or anymetal products as recommended by their manufacturer. Protim Clearchoice can be usedin close association with bituminous felts.
