ABOUT MEDHPAR KHAVDA BHUJ, WOOD CRAFT CLUSTER

Medhpar Khavda Bhuj-Kutch Mega Cluster has its reach craft heritage. The crafts of Bhuj are deeply integrated into the lifestyle of the communities who practice and utilize them; in addition to serving as a means of earning and employment, they are also a creative expression of each community`s distinct cultural life. The exclusive handworks exhibit the craftsmanship of the people. These works are quite famous all over the country. The craftsmen still follow the conventional method in designing their art work, and this is what makes their work quite unique. The handicraft industry in Gujarat has contributed to the economic development of the state. Some of their craftwork includes metal Bell craft work, dies, hand and machine embroidery works, clay items, furniture, handmade durries or carpets & crafts.

The people of Bhuj area inhabit the traditional artisans who make house hold furniture, fixture etc. since centuries having good domestic & export potential. They are using Craftsmen have designed many tools that make them comfortable while they are working. Almost from the time when woodcarving crafts started they have been the initiator for the tool design. The no. of artisans living and working in these areas are around 300 and they are actively working with their traditional craft of making of Bhunga.

HISTORY OF CRAFTSMEN/ARTISANS OF MEDHPAR KHAVDA BHUJ-KUTCH

WOOD CLUSTER

The wood carving cluster is not very old and mainly concentrated at

Khavda & Bhuj city. Micro based Artisans units working employing around 1000

Artisans The artisans working in this cluster resides in and around villages of

Khawda Bhuj. The average earning of Artisans are Rs.400- 500/- per day and

most of them work on output basis The Artisans make the carved products of

different shape and design to be used in bed, sofa sets, carved chairs and glass

frames etc. cots, Windows, Panels' of Doors. The wood work experiences slum

during the period of May to September every year and output comes down up

to 20% of average peak period production. The Artisans works with hand tools

for wood carving work. The hand working skills are very good and need to be

encouraged for working with power tools to reduce health, their health hazard

increase output and earnings.

PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED BY ARTISANS

Artisans of Khawda Villages and making house hold furniture and partly

fixture using traditional art/skill. A few among them are also making other

products like Cupboards, Frames, Panels of door, cots etc. Handicraft Mega

Cluster Mission has taken initiative to motivate artisans for making products of

new design for better value addition and marketability. The Design & Craft

experts of Mission will provide technical guidance and support in this regards.

TECHNO-ECONOMICS SCENARIO

These artisans are not in good economic situation as compared to other

crafts of Bhuj. The market of the artisans is limited to Bhuj-Kutch city and they

are not getting good benefit from market against their work. They are getting

24 days of work in a month with average wage of Rs. 350 per day. Their new

generation is not interested in joining the craft and the old artisans are

continuing the craft work as they are not left with more options. As their

economic situation is no sound, most of the artisans are doing job work for

traders or artisan traders. These artisans have not opted for much product

diversification which otherwise would have given them good value addition &

higher profit margins.

MANUFACTURING FACILITIES WITH ARTISANS

Artisans have their own small workshop with basic tools & equipment.

The work place is totally unorganized & congested. They work while seating on

floor resulting in ergonomically problems like back pain due to wrong seating

posture. The tools and equipment’s are used by them are age old & obsolete.

Craftsmen have designed many tools that make them comfortable while they

are working. when woodcarving crafts started they have been the initiator for

requirements of the tool design evolved from the need of craftsmen. They use

existing old aged tools like hammer, planer, compass, chisel for carving. They

have variety of chisels for carving purpose.

11

RAW MATERIAL & CONSUMABLE USED BY ARTISANS

The main raw material used in the woodcarving cluster is Sheesham

wood, Shagun wood . The wood is bought from Bhuj local market. In the

Medhpar Khavda region wood traders are not available.

I. Raw Materials Sizing: The wood is prepared as per the specifications to

produce the statue. The outer skin is of the wood removed to reveal the inner soft pale portion of the trunk and then the inner portion is split into different sizes as per the requirements. These entire processes occur at approved timber merchant place, under the guidance of craftsman who needs the materials.

II. Measurements: After slicing the wooden piece as per the required size,

craftsman do the proportional measurement by the PRAKAR (compass) on wood block.

III. Sketching: Once the proportional measurements have been done by the

craftsman, they do a rough sketch by pencil on the basis of measurement. This stage is needed to get a rough idea that how the wood piece is going to carve. Artisan uses the different design frames to mark on plank as per customer requirement.

Page 14: PRE-FEASIBILITY REPORT For Setting up of Common Facility ...handicraftmegacluster.in/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Pre_Feasibility... · ( CFC ) at Furniture Cluster at Medhpar Khavda

14

IV. Rough carving: After the sketching stage, in the rough carving stage the

craftsman gets full idea of the object and carves the big portion of the block roughly by the help of big chisels, hammer and saw. In this stage craftsman mostly removes the unnecessary material and shapes it for next stage.

V. Fine carving: After the rough carving craftsman starts carving in more

details. At this stage craftsman carves all parts in details and every unnecessary materials is removed.

VI. Detailing: At this stage craftsman receives an almost developed product

from the last stage carving. This is the last stage for carving and almost ready from main craftsman side.

VII. Sanding: After the final carving stage the product is handed over to helper,

learner or craftswomen, where they do the surface finishing of products by various numbers of sand papers. They start rubbing from 50 number of sand paper that is more efficient to smoothen the rough surface. Gradually they use 80 and 100 number of sand papers for more finishing, and at the end they use 120 numbers, which gives the final smooth surface before using the wax polish.

VIII. Polishing: After sand paper, wax polish is used for glossy and shiny

surface. This wax polish is applied on the whole surface of product through brush and left for 12 hours in a dry & shadow condition.

IX. Buffing: After 12 hours of implementing the polish, it reaches partially dry

stage. At this time craftswomen or helpers rub the surface with a piece of cloth until they receive a glossy and shiny surface.

EDUCATION & SKILL LEVELS OF ARTISANS

The artisans possess good skill for making of traditional products like Tables, Cots, Sofa, Door/Window, Frames etc. But they are not aware of modern techniques of making crafts. They did not have exposure on latest machine & equipment. Their education level is very low. There is a primary & secondary school in village where most of the artisan children are taking their education.

HEALTH & SAFETY ISSUES

The artisans are facing health & safety issues due to unhealthy working environment the workplace lacks proper sunlight during the daytime and due to unavailability of electricity, it is difficult for the craftsmen to carry out the detail works. Also the artisan has to sit on shop floor for working so they are facing issue related to back pain.

Conclusions & Recommendation:

MSME-TOOL ROOM (IGTR) Indore recommends that establishment of

Common Facility Centre for benefits of artisans is very much necessary with

the objective to provide facility to artisans for manufacturing of value added

existing products and products selected under product diversification for

increasing brand image and income level of artisans. CFC would be utilized

to its maximum by artisans of the cluster for job work basis for making

existing & modern design tables, cots, sofa, sets, cupboards, door, window

etc. Since these products of good design & quality will fetch better price

from customers, artisans would be able to pay service charges of CFC

without any problem.

MSME-TOOL ROOM (IGTR) Indore concludes that setting up of

Common Facility Centre at Village Medhpar Khavda Bhuj Cluster would be

technically feasible and economically viable.

On Acceptance of pre-feasibility report, MSME-TOOL ROOM (IGTR)

Indore may take up implementation of project for setting up of CFC at Village

Medhpar Khavda Bhuj Cluster on turnkey basis including hand holding

support for period of 3 months after project implementation.
