1 |Apply for a student visa

Confirmation of Enrolment (COE)When your documentation has been received by Griffith University and

you have met all the necessary requirements, the university will email

you (or your agent) an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (COE).

If you do not have an email address or access to the Internet, a printed

COE will also be mailed to you. You (or your agent) can use this COE to

apply for a student visa at your nearest Australian Embassy, Consulate,

High Commission or Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

Please be aware that applicants for a student visa will require visa length

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and may also require a health

check as well as finance assessment.

Important conditions on your student visa

Student visas come with a range of conditions and it is your responsibility

to ensure that you understand these conditions. If these conditions are

broken, the visa can be cancelled.

1. You are expected to complete your studies by the end

date of your COE. This date is based on the time it would

normally take to complete your selected program of study on

a normal full time basis. This means that in most cases you will

need to be enrolled in 40 credit points (CP) per semester or

be prepared to catch up during summer semesters in order to

complete your study on time.

However, if you have been awarded advanced standing (credit)

based on previous studies approved prior to starting at Griffith,

the duration of study time will be adjusted to reflect this. That

is, the more credit, the shorter duration of the COE. There are

only very limited circumstances where you can reduce your study

load and extend your study time. This may only be done if you

take leave of absence, are at academic risk and an intervention

strategy has been implemented and documented or there were

compassionate or compelling circumstances.

2. Some visas are issued with a no further stay condition.

This means that you will not be able to stay in Australia beyond

the date on the visa.

3. You must stay enrolled in a registered program at Griffith.

This program must match the program for your COE and

student visa.

4. You must continue to be able to pay for your studies andliving expenses in Australia. If you fail to pay, your enrolment

can be cancelled.

5. Work Rights in Australia. Students are automatically grantedthe right to work on a student visa. Students can work 20 hours

per week during the time of the published semester dates.

Official examination sessions are considered part of the semester.

You can not begin to work before your classes commence. There

are no limits on working hours during vacation times. Voluntary

or unpaid work is still limited to 20 hours. Work that is a formal

registered part of your programsuch as practical teaching

sessions, is not subject to normal work restrictions. Some

scholarships may place restrictions on working hours, especially

for postgraduate students.

6. You must maintain satisfactory academic performance

and attendance. Students who have their enrolment cancelled

due to unsatisfactory academic progress or unsatisfactoryattendance are breaking the conditions of their student visa

and can be reported to the Department of Immigration and

Citizenship (DIAC) and their visa may be cancelled.

7. Griffith University is required to inform DIAC if you:

Change your program, stop attending, change the length of your

program or do not meet the program requirements.

8. You cannot change education providers within 6 months

of your commencement of your main or principal program

of study. This includes all preparatory programs, e.g. English.

9. You are required to provide Griffith with your Australian

address within 7 days of arriving in Australia. You must

also notify Griffith of any change to your Australian address

within 7 days.

10. Students who are not yet 18 when they apply for a visa

have special conditions. They must live in a Griffith approved

Homestay accommodation, and maintain fortnightly contact

with an allocated International Student Advisor who will ensure

adequate support and welfare.

11. If you are considering having dependants join you

on a student dependant visa, you should contact the

Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

12. You must pay for Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

for the full duration/length of your Australian student

visa before an Australian Student visa will be issued. This

does not apply to Norwegian and Swedish students who arealready covered through Governmental Reciprocal agreements,

sponsored students who have their OSHC organised through

their sponsor, students doing internships offshore e.g. Master

of Teaching students doing internships in Canada and students

studying offshore.

2 | Book flights and airport collection

International orientationOnce you have your student visa, you are ready to book your flight to

Australia. Arriving a couple of days before the commencement of your

compulsory International Orientation will allow you time to settle in,

adjust to the climate and get over any jet lag.

Orientation is a program of activities designed to provide you with

valuable information that will assist you to settle well into your new

academic and social environment. It is also a unique opportunity to

meet students from all over the world and develop lasting friendships.

For international students, orientation takes place in the two weeks

prior to the commencement of classes each semester.

The first week of orientation is designed specifically to meet the needs

of international students whilst the second week of orientation is when

domestic students arrive on campus and all new students are required

to attend their program specific orientation.

Living costs In order to cover immediate costs such as rent and

bond (security deposit) on rental property, telephone and electricityconnections as well as textbooks, it is recommended that students have

access to approximately AUD$5000. Check information providedunder Arrange your Accommodationpage 7. If you are studying a

program that involves field trips or specialist equipment, this will be an

additional cost and you will be informed about this when your courses

Alternative Overseas Health Cover (OSHC)

If you have independently organised alternative Overseas Health Cover

different to the OSHC Worldcare option detailed in your offer letter,Griffith will require a copy of your visa length OSHC policy. Griffith will

require a copy of your visa length OSHC policy and proof that you have

paid your OHSC. This must be provided before Griffith can issue your

electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE).

Money matters

Cash When you arrive in Australia if you are carrying AUD$10,000

or more in Australian currency or foreign equivalent you will need to

declare this to customs. Since it is not safe to carry large amounts of

cash, you may want to consider bringing just enough Australian

currency to last you a few days, approximately AUD$500.

Credit Cards You may also consider using a credit card, travel cardor opening an account in Australia before you arrive. Credit cards are

widely used in Australia and the commonly accepted ones are Master

Card, Bankcard, Visa and American Express. Alternatively a travel card

allows you to pre-load your card with your own money which can be

converted to Australian dollars at a fixed exchange rate. Make enquiries

at your local banks before departure. The Commonwealth Bank in

Australia provides students with information on setting up a bank

account and depositing money from your home country before you

arrive. This can be done either online or over the phone with operators

who speak your language.

6|Arriving in Australia

The Australian Customs and BorderProtection Service

Incoming Passenger Card While you are still on the plane and

before you arrive in Australia, you will be asked to complete an Incoming

Passenger Card. Read it carefully and make sure you understand the

questions before you fill it in. This is a legal document and untruthful

answers can result in on the spot fines or court action and/or

deportation.

Australian Customs - Everyone arriving in Australia from an overseas

flight must pass through the Australian Customs area. Australian

customs plays an important role in protecting Australia from the entry

of illegal and harmful goods . Certain foods , items made of organic

materials , drugs (including herbal and prescribed medicine) may not be

allowed into the country so it is wise to check what can and cant bebrought into the country before packing your bag, please refer to Step

4 Pack and prepare. It is also important that your family and friends at

home also know what they shouldnt send through the mail to you in

Australia. For more information go to: www.customs.gov.au

GREEN ROUTE If you have nothing to declare.

Any items you do not wish to declare (such as fruit given to you during

the flight) can be thrown away in the quarantine bins at the airport

terminal. Quarantine detector dogs are used at airports to smell for

items that may pose a quarantine risk and every item of luggage is

screened or X-rayed. Remember if you choose to follow the green

route your bags may still be examined and if you are found with

prohibited goods you will face a penalty or fine and/or deportation.

RED ROUTE - You wish to declare you have the following

Performance and image enhancing drugs

All performance and image enhancing drugs must be declared on arrival.

These include human growth hormone, DHEA and all anabolic and

androgenic steroids. These items cannot be imported into Australia

without a permit.

Currency

There is no limit to the amount of currency you can bring in or out of

Australia. However, you must declare amounts of A$10,000 or more in

Australian currency or foreign equivalent.

Food, plants, animals and biological goods

Declare all food, plant and animal goods, equipment used with animals,biological materials, soils and sand to Quarantine on arrival. If you dont,

you could be given an on-the-spot fine or face prosecution.

MedicinesYou need to declare all drugs and medicines including prescription

medications, alternative, herbal and traditional medicines, vitamin and

mineral preparation formulas to Customs. Some products require a

permit or quarantine clearance and/or a letter or prescription from your

doctor describing your medication and medical condition.

Protected wildlife

Australias strict laws control the import and export of protected wildlife

and associated products. This includes traditional medicinal products

and regulated products such as coral, orchids, caviar, ivory products and

many hunting trophies.

Public transport Airtrain service

train service that operates from Brisbane Airport directly in to Brisbane city

centre, with further connections to stations on the Gold Coast. However,

the travelling time to the Gold Coast is approximately 90 minutes and there

is a very limited number of trains late at night. For information on fares and

Campus The place where you undertake your studies.Griffith University has five campuses. Brisbane campusesinclude Mt Gravatt, Nathan and South Bank. Othercampuses include Gold Coast and Logan.

Citizenship If you have applied for, or have beengranted permanent residency status in Australia, you mustadvise either your agent or the Griffith International Officeimmediately. An international offer letter is valid only if youare not an Australian or New Zealand citizen, Australianpermanent resident or Australian Permanent Protection visaholder.

Conditional offer If you have received a conditionaloffer this means that you need to provide furtherinformation or you need to meet some conditions beforeyou can be accepted. Some common conditions includesupplying a copy of academic transcripts, award certificates

or documents detailing your English proficiency.

Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) When youracceptance form, payment and any other requesteddocumentation has been received by and processed byGriffith, you or your agent will receive an email, includingyour electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE). If youdo not have an email address or access to the Internet, aprinted COE will also be mailed to you. You or your agentwill use this COE to apply for a student visa at your nearestAustralian Embassy, Consulate, High Commission or theDepartment of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). Pleasebe aware that applicants for a student visa will require visa

length Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and may alsorequire a health check as well as finance assessment.

Important terms and conditions explained

Contact hours the number of hours you are expected toattend classes, for example, lectures, tutorials or workshops.

Course (formerly subject) is a unit of study normally

undertaken in one semester. A full study load for eachsemester is usually four courses of 10 credit points eachOR credit points totalling 40 for example two courses of20 credit points.

Course Convenor An academic staff memberresponsible for the management, conduct, teaching andassessment of a course.

Credit If youve partially or fully completed studies atanother institution, you may be eligible to receive credittowards your Griffith University degree. This means youdont have to repeat courses that you have successfully

completed elsewhere if your credit has been approved bythe Griffith Credit office.

Credit point each course has a credit point value thatgives the weighting of that course towards the requirementsof an academic Program. A 10CP course normally involvesthree/four contact hours per week with an expected sixor seven hours per week of private study, research orassignment work.

Disciplines Term used for areas of study, for example,engineering, law or education.

ESOS Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) is

an Australian government legislative framework to protectthe interests of overseas students. By determining industrystandards, this legal framework ensures internationalstudent consumer protection and the supply of qualityeducation services by registered Australian educationproviders. Electives Courses that form part of certain degrees.Students must select, from a number of options includinggeneral areas of interest, the electives they wish toundertake as part of their studies. It is recommended thatstudents seek study planning advice from qualified staff in

their Discipline.

Full-time study For international students a full-time student is enrolled in 4 courses equivalent to 40CP(credit points) per semester. The length or duration ofan international student visa is usually calculated toaccommodate students completing their studies whileundertaking a standard full-time study load.

Homestay Homestay accommodation option meansliving with an Australian family, where you can develop yourlanguage skills and experience the Australian way of life.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System),

one English Language test recognised by Griffith Universityused to assess applicants for English proficiency.



International Orientation Orientation is a programof activities designed to provide you with valuableinformation that will assist you to settle well into your newacademic and social environment. For international students,orientation usually takes place in the two weeks prior tothe commencement of classes each semester. Once enrolledstudents should check information for orientation datesthrough the student portal.

International Student Advisor with the experienceand knowledge of cross-cultural matters, InternationalStudent Advisors offer confidential advice and support ona wide range of academic and personal issues, includingunderstanding university policies and procedures, academicadjustment, social integration and financial difficulties.

ISLPR (International Second Language Proficiency

Ratings), one English Language test recognised by GriffithUniversity used to assess applicants for English proficiency.

Lecture A presentation by academic staff to a largegroup of students. Students are expected to take notesand sometimes additional material is available online.Lectures are usually delivered on campus and occasionallyby video link.

Major Some degrees require students to selecta specialisation area from a number of course options.These form a major, which generally consists of six to eightcourses. For example Human Resource Management underthe Bachelor of Business.

Online study Internet-based study delivered online byLearning@Griffith. Access is provided through the GriffithStudent Portal, which also provides access to informationon your program, courses, assessment and communicationtools. Online study is usually conducted off-shore in yourhome country.

Overseas Health Cover (OHSC) It is a Department ofImmigration (DIAC) requirement that international studentsmust have Overseas Health Cover (OSHC) for the entirelength of their student visa.

Postgraduate A graduate who has completed anundergraduate degree and is undertaking a higherdegree, e.g. Master of Science (MSc), Graduate Diploma ofEducation.

Practicum A practical learning session that may takeplace off-campus, e.g. in a hospital, primary or secondaryschool or laboratory.

Pre-requisites Requirements that must be completedto gain admission to a University program. Some universityprograms have pre-requisite courses that must besuccessfully completed before you can study the follow-oncourse.

Student number (GU ID) This is your GriffithUniversity identification number. This number is uniqueto each student and remains the same for the entirelength of your studies. Please quote this number in anycommunications with Griffith University and do not lose it.
