Original workplanOK:s• Survey on activities of the project participants• Kick-off meeting• Knowledge sharing

Still waiting on the ECPGR level• Evaluation of germplasm, extending the present ring tests (or including them in the pre-breeding initiative)in the pre-breeding initiative) • Inventory of pre-breeding activities in Europe• Identification characterisation and evaluation data required Evaluation of on-going SNP genotyping of germplasmgoing SNP genotyping of germplasm • Identification of priorities for additional genotyping• Starting the development of pure genetic stocks as ‘type specimens’ of gene-bank accessions• Starting the pre-breeding programmes

Seminar

• A pre-breeding workshop on cereals in Alnarp Sweden on 24-25 November 2009.• Organized by NordGen, ECPGR, SLU, Graminor, MTT Agrifood Research O g y , C G , S U, G , gFinland and Oatly. • Altogether 49 participants from 12 countries joined the first meeting on increasingly important subject on pre-breeding.•The programme included 20 presentations with four current themes: 1) Pre-breeding in cereals – status and examples of existing collaborations, 2) Breeding goals and needs, 3) Challenges of funding and 4) Future needs and

li tiapplication.

• Conclusions from discussions made common interests were prioritized• Conclusions from discussions made – common interests were prioritized• A Concept Notes on Pre breeding issues was produced – available on webto everyone’s use

• Elcio’s thoughts:1) Activities related to PGR: high cost and long term return 2) L k f h t i ti d l ti d t2) Lack of characterization and evaluation data 3) Knowledge on the genetic diversity, local knowledge and diversity important –information from them, knowledge of the inter species relationship 4) Encourage the development of public-private cooperation) g p p p p5) Prebreeding needs a strong breeding program to operate under

• Conclusion paper from seminar1) Build a joined disease resistance database including for ex data on PGR reactions to1) Build a joined disease resistance database including for ex. data on PGR reactions to different biotic/biotic stresses, and the availability of molecular markers. The database can also be used as a tool to identify missing data and the need for urgent research. It was also discussed that there is a need for access to joined differential sets and nurseries for the various diseases of importance.2) A need to develop phenotype tests relevant for abiotic stress resistance and apply to relevant germplasm3) Lobbying for pre-breeding at EU and national levels and supporting establishment of3) Lobbying for pre-breeding at EU and national levels, and supporting establishment of private-public collaborations

4) Increase the online availability of characterization/evaluation data, combine the FIGS concept and evaluation data to develop precise models 5) I th di l b t b k d b d t i f t d5) Improve the dialog between gene banks and breeders, strive for transparency and build trust in the legal frameworks6) Make genotyping information available where differences in genome regions for adapted material vs. landraces are demonstrated. p7) The policy needs to be in line with political agenda and decision makers, and on the EU level, awareness on research needs should be raised.

• What about:• What about:1) AEGIS / pre-breeding interaction?2) The role of ECPGR: deciding on common European specific aims / applying for funding / connecting people / organizings seminars to share the knowledge / / etc, etc…
