We sing songs about peace, love and kindness but our earth seems to exhibit an alarming absence of God's control, that is, unless we understand how God brings about His purposes and rule in the affairs of men. He tears down what man has built so that He might build a new foundation based on His rule. Thus, as we read Jesus' prophecy of the total destruction of the 400-year-old temple of Jerusalem, we are confronted with yet another example of God's tearing down in order to build up. Have you been going through a time of tearing down? Does your family or marriage seem to be falling apart or perhaps it is your health or your business? Yes, it may be an attack of Satan. But it may also be God. Don't be discouraged because He also is the God who will rebuild your life on a foundation that the storms of life cannot destroy.

Sunday ReflectionTearing down in order to build up Did you know on average, magnitude 2 and smaller earthquakes occur several hundred times a day world wide? Add to this at least five famines presently affecting millions of people. Signs of destruction and

upheaval are increasing every year. We sing songs about peace, love and kindness but our earth seems to exhibit an alarming absence of God's control, that is, unless we understand how God brings about His purposes and rule in the affairs of men. He tears down what man has built so that He might build a new foundation based on His rule. "Anyone unwilling to work should not eat." (2 Thessalonians 3.10)What is the difference between attending a dinner party and hosting the same? Both are gatherings of love, friendship, and joy. But, as any diligent host can attest, the latter includes chores! Stewardship is the difference between a place you visit and a place you call home. Giving our labour and allowing others to contribute makes our church a home rather than a place we visit.

November 20 Red Wednesday is an event aimed at highlighting the persecution and injustice

suffered by Christians, while promoting respect and tolerance between people of different religions. We want people to take a stand for their faith, and more broadly, for religious freedom. In solidarity with Christians who suffer because of their faith, we are inviting people to make themselves visible by wearing red, as this colour is associated with martyrdom in the Christian tradition. A special rosary for persecuted Christians will be said before the 12:05 Mass at St. Basil’s.

Red Wednesday

The third workshop for Confirmation candidates is: Monday, Nov. 18 for students attending Assumption School and Ecole St. Mary or Thursday, Nov. 21 for students attending St. Teresa and St. Paul Schools.

For more information, please call Cyndi at the parish office.

missionaries, and local communities to provide care for the many children and families caught in the dehumanizing grip of poverty. Chalice commits 90.3 percent of its spending in support of programs. In fiscal year 2017-2018, $27,001,000 was spent directly towards supporting those in need.Join Chalice to strengthen communities- one child at a time.

There are Chalice gift catalogues available at the church entrances or at the parish office. Please note: A private donor is generously offering gift matching for two of our catalogue items this year up to $100,000. A ‘Most Needed’ gift and gifts to an orphanage will be matched, doubling the impact! Thank you for supporting this worthy charity.

Fr. Kevin’s Cluttered Desk The Cardinal Virtues, much like the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, work best in harmony. Mom wanted me to focus on prudence, but prudence without temperance or justice does not work well, and none of them work well if we don’t have the fortitude to stand for what is right. The other factor that we need to recognize is that these virtues are already planted within each of us. The challenge is calling them into action and putting them to proper use. To recognize them in our lives and to celebrate when we have used them well, and to recognize the times we did not use them as well as we should have. The Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity also need to be added to the mix since the Cardinal Virtues and the Theological Virtues hold as their primary aim: the love of God above all things and the love of neighbour as we desire to be loved. Faith is a gift from God, just as are all the virtues, but faith is what we are rooted in, it is the foundation of who we are. Faith is sometimes seen holding a cross, or in this image, Faith is holding a book, the Bible, the scriptures. If we do not know the Word of God, if we do not know the life of Christ, how can we say we are rooted in Christ? Hope is how we hold on and do not get lost. Hope is seen holding an anchor. When we drop our anchor or anchor ourselves in Christ, the storms of this life will not crash us on the rocks of sin and temptation. Charity is generally always seen holding a child or surrounded by children. Let the little children come to me. Our love is measured by God in how we receive children. I sometimes wonder what is going to happen to those people in the church who have frowned at, glared, at or made someone with a little child feel unwelcome in the church. And Jesus picked up a little child and held it and proclaimed that it is to such as these that the Kingdom of God belongs. How shall we live the virtues to their fullest each day of our lives?

Peace Fr. Kevin
