Notice of Senior Pastor Call Service Announcement

The Council met on Tuesday, July 30th, to discuss the next steps in our Call Process. Pastor Merker, our Circuit Visitor, came at our request to provide additional “Spiritual Guidance”.

At the start of the meeting, a recent communication from Pastor Morris was shared where he recommended that we move forward with the 2 Senior Pastor candidates due to the uncertainty of the length of his recovery.

The Senior Pastor Call Service will be held on Wednesday, August 28 at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary.

Sanctuary doors will be closed during the Prayer Vigil from 6:15-6:45 pm. Please sign in for Call Service when entering for Prayer Vigil.

Childcare available. Must be present to vote.

Pastor Merker provided an outline of the proposed Call Service. It is a formal worship service. The intention of the Call Service is for us to Take in the Holy Spirit and come together and allow the Holy Spirit to Work during our worship time. At the start of the service, the Council will review the voting procedure and answer questions only about the voting procedure. The votes will take place during the service.

After much discussion, our voting ballot will include Pastor Adle, Pastor Blanke, and an “Other” check box. The “Other” box is designed for members who do not wish to call either of the Senior Pastor candidates.

To call a new Senior Pastor requires, according to our Constitution, a super majority vote (2/3rds) of the members present. Per our legal documents, member must be present to vote (no proxy voting). The vote total is based on all the voting members that have signed in. The results of each ballot will be counted by Council members, and then announced. All ballots will be retained.

The procedure that will be used in the voting is as follows:

1. After the first vote, if a candidate or “Other” obtains a 2/3 vote, that person has been elected.

- If no candidate receives a 2/3 majority, an additional vote will take place.

- If a candidate or “Other” obtains less than 15% of the vote, this person or “Other” is removed from the next ballot.

2. We will take up to 3 ballots to obtain a 2/3rds vote for a new Senior Pastor. If, however, on the third vote one of the candidates or “Other” receives less than 15% of the vote, then a fourth ballot will be taken.

3. If the last vote does not produce a 2/3rd super majority, we have an impasse and no-vote is the outcome. No call can be issued. We would have to restart the Call Process. The Call Committee has advised that it would most likely be 6 weeks or more for them to fully vet another Senior Pastor candidate and have him available for a congregational visit. At this point, the Council will review next steps in the Call Process with the Call Committee.

At the conclusion of our meeting, the Council affirmed the Call Committee. We believe that the Call Committee is formed through the working of the Holy Spirit and that the Holy Spirit has brought insight into their work. Their continued due diligence is greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions, please contact Bob Shimmel, Council President, via his email at [email protected].

Continue to keep our Church in your prayers and trust that He is in charge and has already chosen the one to lead RLC forward.

If you are planning to attend the fall class on Luther's Small Catechism, feel free to bring your own copy. We will order some of the spiral bound editions if you want to purchase one of those. Please let [email protected] know if you want to purchase a copy.

I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With Him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. – Psalm 16:8 Gracious Heavenly Father, in Your never-failing goodness and mercy, You have sustained us in our transition with blessings abundant. Thank You for every member of our church family and for the fellowship we share as believers in Jesus, our Savior. Thank You for those faithfully serving on our council and call committee and their dedication to seeking You in this decision-making process. Bless them, Lord God, in their obedience to answer the call to lead. And now, Father God, as we come together this week to decide on our next senior pastor, please clear our minds of all distractions, doubts, fears and

entanglements and establish in us a peaceful spirit as we listen for Your still small Voice. Impart in us a quiet confidence believing Your loving Presence is indeed among us, guiding and directing our decision. Breathe fresh upon us, Holy Spirit. May it be so in Jesus’ Precious Name, Amen.

CONTRIBUTED TO HELP RLC MOVE FORWARD DURING OUR TRANSITION.

7. The Southeastern District recently held a session called “ROC – Reaching Others for Christ”. Ron and Carol Bostick, Jamee Thieme, and Vicar Alan Shaw attended.

8. We will complete our summer Adult Education this month. Thanks to all the volunteer teachers. Also, thanks for all our members who have stepped up to support our Fall Adult Education program.

9. The new Junior Kindergarten program enrollment continues to build. This program is another way for RLC to help share the “Good News”.

10. We completed the adoption of our new budget into our system. Thanks to Janet Bowling for all the great work “behind the scenes”.

ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

The Mediterranean Diet Made Simple and Tasty Have you heard about the Mediterranean Diet and wondered what it’s all about, or knew a little bit about it but worried that it might be too complicated or time-consuming? Join us to learn about the health and flavor benefits of this delicious and nutritious lifestyle. Meal preparation will be kept simple, with recipes focused on tasty, easily-prepared fresh produce, whole grains, and other healthy options. The foods will not necessarily be vegetarian, but will be “vegetable-forward,” while still hearty and familiar enough to appeal to the whole family. You’ll get good ideas for main course preparations as well as for side dishes, salads, breads, other baked goods, and even desserts! You’ll leave with booklet of weeknight-friendly recipes to inspire you to try something new.

The class will consist of one 2 1/2-hour session and will be offered on both Thursday, September 26 from 6:00-8:30 pm, and on Saturday, September 28 from 10:00 am-12:30 pm in the Family Life Center kitchen, so you can choose the class time that best suits your schedule. The class will be both demonstration and participation and includes snacks and recipes, so bring an apron and come ready to sample! The cost of the class is $25; the proceeds will be used to enhance the equipment in the kitchen, and a portion will also be donated to Meals on Wheels of Wake County as part of Resurrection’s community outreach ministry.

To sign up for the class, email Kim Otten at [email protected]. Your place will be guaranteed once we receive your registration and class fee; please make checks payable for $25 to Resurrection Lutheran Church with “cooking class” in the memo. If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 919-303-5044. Hope to see you there!

Chef Kim will prepare heavy hors d'oeuvres.

For planning purposes, we need RSVPs as soon as possible. Please RSVP if you know or think you will be attending the event.

Contributions for a gift is greatly appreciated. Please make payable to Mike Hahne and place in his church mailbox by the end of September.

Several Unger family members will be traveling to the celebration from out of state and flight miles donations are appreciated.

Contact MaryAnn directly for contributions at [email protected].

RSVPs and questions may be directed to Kristi Grabow.

Pictures of Bob in ministry are needed and should be given to Kristi Grabow for scanning or sent to Kristi at [email protected].

Acolytes For rising 5th graders and older students that need acolyte training, which will take place in early September, please watch for the information and plan to attend. Dates for training will be sent through RCB email, as well as listed in the newsletter and announcements.

Being an acolyte allows our youth to be actively involved in serving at RLC. You are able to sign up online for dates and service times that work for your family.

For current acolytes, please continue to serve by signing up for services at www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b48afa62c7-summer.

Children's Church for ages 3-6, is held weekly during the 10:45 worship service.

Children are dismissed before the sermon for 20 minutes to gather together for a short lesson or story about the theme of the day. They will work on a craft and/or sing a song that matches the story. This time will help grow their faith.

If you would like to help with Children's Church, contact [email protected] or [email protected].

Nursery Care Over the summer, we will have nursery coverage during the 9:30 am service only. We want all to know that children are welcome in all of our worship services! God loves the little children, and so do we! If there is ever a time that you feel your child needs a "break", feel free to use the nursery/preschool room during Sanctuary services and Room 151 in the Family Life Center during the praise and worship service.

There are rainbow bags available in both locations filled with books and other small items for the children to use during service. There are also books and often weekly hand-outs for the kids on the tables outside of the Sanctuary and Family Life Center. Please, help yourself!

Wednesday Night Workshop (WNW) We will begin on Wednesday, September 4 at 6:30 pm in the Family Life Center for an overview of the year, introduction of teachers and small group leaders. We will also be handing out this year’s Confirmation Handbook.

All students in grades 5-8 and their parents are invited. Fifth grade students will not be regularly meeting on Wednesdays, but it will be helpful to attend. The 10 Commandments materials will be given to parents, as well as information on this class.

Questions? Please email [email protected].

Kidz Live In past years, there has been the opportunity for kids to play and be supervised during Wednesday night classes. In order for this to happen, we need volunteers willing to plan some games/activities and to supervise the kids from 6:30-7:45 pm. With enough volunteers, you would only need to be there one or two Wednesdays each month. We are looking for high school students and adults.

Please reply to [email protected], if interested, have questions, or want to sign up!

We have the need for older teens and adults to be Sunday School teachers. We will provide training prior to the beginning of classes and supply all materials required. The more teachers we get, the

more opportunity we have to team teach, and to provide flexibility for teachers to share responsibilities and not have to be present every Sunday. Our Sunday School classes range from toddlers through 8th grade.

If you are interested in teaching or have questions, contact [email protected] or [email protected].

RLC Christmas Program This year, we are planning on having the children's program at the 3:00 pm Christmas Eve Service. Rehearsals will take place during Sunday School hour on December 5 and 12, as well as a couple of Saturdays for approximately an hour.

In order to plan, it would be extremely helpful to have an idea of how many kids will participate and what their ages are. Material will need to be chosen based on abilities.

Please reply to [email protected] with your child's name and age/grade if you would like to participate.
