TODAY … A very warm Welcome to all who

are worshipping with us … especially

if you are visiting Napier or at the

Cathedral for the first time … you are

invited to join us for morning tea (or

coffee!) served at the back of the

Cathedral following the 10am service.

At 11.00 am this morning, the Rev’d

Dorothy Brooker is at Colwyn House,

Hastings, for their end-of-year/

Christmas communion service

A Reminder ... to comply with the Cathe-dral’s Health & Safety policies (in light of new legislation and standards), it is vital that all staff and volunteers - as well as all trades-people - report to the Office and sign in so that we have a record of who is in the building and in what area. Jeanne Ayson has spent a great deal of time preparing our H&S manual to ensure we’ll all aware of our responsibilities under the H&S Act.

CWS Christmas Gift Appeal 2017

The weeks leading up to Christmas can be busy and noisy - parties and family gather-ings make for lots of noise and words - sometimes happy, sometimes not. This Advent-Christmas season, CWS invite us to make space for the voices of people who we might otherwise miss. Week by week, we’ll focus on the one of the CWS partners providing programmes to tackle the causes of poverty every day. Our dona-tions through the CWS Christmas Gift Ap-peal help provide resources for change and give people hope now, and may help people out of poverty forever. The world is a small place - we need to make sure we hear the voices of the people crying out for food, water and justice, and respond in ways that give life and hope. In this way, we can do our bit to help bring peace to the world. Please give generously to the 2017 CWS Christmas Gift Appeal - let’s make hope our story! Appeal envelopes are available on the back table in the Cathedral, please send direct to CWS, P O Box 22-652, Christ-church; or donate on-line at: http://christmasappeal.org.nz/donate/

Advent 2 -Sujatha is now the panchayat (or

local council) president. She has the skills

she needs to make changes that improve

the lives of her village in Tamil Nadu state in

South India. As a Dalit and a woman she

has worked hard to make the panchayat

work for the poorest people and create

hope for their future. Human Rights Foun-

dation has trained her and others to exer-

cise their political rights, standing up

against those who try to take community

land and resources.

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Christmas Carols

All welcome.

Today’s Order of Service

This morning’s service follows the Eucharistic Liturgy ‘Thanksgiving of the People of God’ com-mencing on page 404 in the red New Zealand Anglican Prayer Book; the tunes for the hymns may be found in Common Praise, the blue hymn book in the pews;

Presider & Preacher: Dean Ian Render Liturgist: Jennifer Harris Choir Director: Anthony Tattersall Organist: Gary Bowler

Choral setting: Summsion in F

Introit: The truth from above - R V Williams

Processional: Down by the Jordan tune: Lobe Den Herren [CP558

Down by the Jordan, a prophet named John was baptising, preaching a message the people found bold and surprising: “God will forgive! Show that you’ll change how you live! Surely God's new day is rising!”

There by the river, the crowd came with great expectation: “Are you God's Chosen One, sent here to rescue our nation?” “No!” John replied. “He who is mightier than I judges and offers salvation.”

Jesus, you went to be baptised along with the others, taking your place among sinners, God's lost sons and daughters. Then with great love, God’s Spirit came as a dove! Your work began in those waters.

Here in the Church, we are baptised and filled with God's Spirit. Freed and forgiven, we’re welcomed with joy! Can you hear it? This is God’s sign! This is how God says, “You’re mine!” Let’s take the good news and share it! © Carolyn Gillette - Songs of Grace

Welcome: Dean Ian Render

We hear a ‘Partner Story’ from the CWS Christmas Gift Appeal, and light the second candle in our Advent Wreath - the candle of ‘Peace’

We remember the voice of the prophets calling us to be bearers of peace in a troubled world.

The candle is lit We light the candle for peace. May it light the way for us as we make hope our story.

All sing:

Collect: Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets

to preach repentance and prepare the way for our

salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake

our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus

Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and

the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Salvation is near for the God-fearing, and his glory will dwell in our land.

2 Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced.

Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven.

AA149 - Shirley Murray

Gospel Reading: Mark 1: 1-8 Jennifer Harris

The Sermon: Dean Ian Render

NZPB page: 410 Affirmation of Faith - Nicene Creed

NZPB page: 413-7 The Prayers of the People Rev’d Jon Williams

NZPB page: 419 The Peace Dean Ian Render

We greet the people near us, saying ‘Peace be with you’ / ‘Kia tau te rangimarie’.

During the next hymn the bread and wine, symbols of Christ’s life, are brought to the altar; our offerings of money that support the mission and ministry of the Cathedral are collected and brought forward also.

Offertory Hymn: Let us build a house (All are welcome)

1 Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live.

A place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive.

Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace.

Here the love of Christ shall end divisions:

All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

1 We wait for you, we long for you to come Lord Jesus Christ, bring Christmas to our home! we covet peace, the curing of the earth, but not the pain that carries you to birth.

2 We wait for you, we long to see you come released from Pilate's hall to upper room: we covet truth, the triumph of the good, but not the nails the torture and the blood.

3 We wait for you beside the Easter tomb, Lord Jesus Christ we long for you to come -- we covet life relieved of hurt and loss, but not the weight of carrying a cross.

4 You wait for us, you long for us to be a birthing place for peace, a justice tree, an energy for life, a flag! a sign! a fragrance in the air - fresh bread, new wine!

Page 7: Prayer ycles - Napier Cathedral...Advent 2 -Sujatha is now the panchayat (or local council) president. She has the skills she needs to make changes that improve the lives of her village

7

2 Let us build a house where prophets speak,

and words are strong and true.

Where all God’s children dare to seek to dream God’s reign anew.

Here the cross shall stand as witness and as symbol of God’s grace.

Here as one we claim the faith of Jesus: All are welcome…

Page 8: Prayer ycles - Napier Cathedral...Advent 2 -Sujatha is now the panchayat (or local council) president. She has the skills she needs to make changes that improve the lives of her village

8

3 Let us build a house where love is found, in water, wine and wheat. A banquet hall on holy ground, where peace and justice meet. Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time and space, as we share in Christ the feast that frees us: All are welcome...

4 Let us build a house where hands will reach beyond the wood and stone. To heal and strengthen, serve and teach, and live the Word they’ve known. Here the outcast and the stranger bear the image of God’s face. Let us bring an end to fear and danger: All are welcome ...

5 Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and visions heard. And loved and treasured, taught and claimed as words within the Word. Built of tears and cries and laughter, prayers of faith and songs of grace. Let this house proclaim from floor to rafter: All are welcome…

Words & Music: Marty Haugen, b. 1950 Tune: TWO OAKS

NZPB page: 420 The Preparation of the Gifts

NZPB page: 420-3 The Great Thanksgiving

It is right indeed that we should praise you ... ... and with all creation we hymn your praise for your unending love, as we sing: Choir: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. To you indeed be glory, almighty God, because on the night before he died, your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; ... ... do this as often as you drink it to remember me.

Page 9: Prayer ycles - Napier Cathedral...Advent 2 -Sujatha is now the panchayat (or local council) president. She has the skills she needs to make changes that improve the lives of her village

9

And so in this great sacrament we celebrate and proclaim the mystery of our faith.

Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come in glory.

Therefore, loving God, recalling now Christ's death and resurrection ...

... with your whole church, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise.

Blessing, honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere, now and forever. Amen.

Celebrating Eucharist – Bosco Peters.

A Christmas Day Community Luncheon Planning is under way for Christmas lunch to be served this year by the Napier Inner City Churches, midday at the Salvation Ar-my premises, Tait Dr, Greenmeadows. The luncheon is open to all who will be on their own and have nowhere to go to share in the celebration of Christmas. Up to 120 people can be catered for and transport can be arranged for those in wheelchairs etc who need assistance getting to the ven-ue. However help is needed to make this event happen - first in locating those to attend the luncheon and secondly we need people to help share the work load in-volved in making this a special celebration. Association of Anglican Women Cathedral Fellowship

The final AAW gathering for this year will be on Monday 11th December at 6:30pm for our Christmas dinner at The Boardwalk, Ahuriri. Partners / friends welcome. If you have not already told Helen you are coming please ring her on 844 8574 by Friday 8th. Our programme next year will start with the usual BBQ at All Saints on Tuesday 13th February. Come and join us then as we share fun and fellowship with AAW mem-bers and other Christian women from around Hawkes Bay. Our last Knit–In for the year was on Mon-day 27th November and our fingers were busy as we tried to finish the garments for Dean Ian to bless on Sunday 3rd. Thank you very much for doing this Ian, both for us and for those receiving our wares. We will continue to meet on the last Monday of each month next year but we will be shift-ing with the library to the MTG. More about this later. Did you know that the library is allowing a 3-month loan period for all items taken out during December. Basically this is to re-duce their work load as they prepare to shift and then settle into their new space in the MTG, but good for us customers. Contacts: Helen, ph. 844-8574 or Kay, ph. 834-4096

Napier Family Centre - Christmas Cheer Appeal All gifts (UNWRAPPED) with gift tag attached should have been returned by today,

Sunday 10th December! Please ensure any outstanding gifts are returned to the Office no later than

Advent Word An opportunity to connect with others as we reflect and pray through Advent - the Society of Saint John the Evangelist (an Anglican order of monks), invite us to par-ticipate again in a programme called ‘AdventWord’, the Anglican Communion’s global Advent calendar. The calendar is created by Christians around the world sending in images in response to an Ad-vent meditation. To participate go on-line to AdventWord.org and signup to receive a daily email from the Brothers of SSJE. The email will contain a daily word and meditation, accompanied by a stunning image. You are invited to respond with an image of your own on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook or you can just watch the calendar grow each day in Advent. When you sign up you will receive easy instruc-tions on how to send in images and view the Advent Calendar.
