HELP NEEDEDWe need volunteers for com-munion clean up. Sign-up sheet in the kitchen or see Adell Bynum for more infor-mation.

APOCALIPSIS 3:20 yo soy tu Hermano Gilberto.........

Sermon NotesTitle: “Godly Compassion”

Scripture: Luke 10:25-29

Paul’s PonderI have grapes on my grape vines (finally). We planted grape vines about four years ago. The first two years we grew sticks with leaves. Last year one of

the plants took off but we only found one bunch of about 3 grapes. One of the plants disappeared.

This year the lost vine came back, although it is only 6” tall. Another plant grew pretty well. But the third plant climbed on the supports we provided and produced several real bunches of grapes. The grapes were very small but very tasty. They were seedless and sweet, about the size of a BB. We didn’t know when to pick them so we let some of them become raisins. They even tasted

good. Raisins on the vine – weird. The grapes seemed to taste better because they were right off the vine. Or was it because they came from vines I had planted? It is so much better to

be able to have something you have labored for rather than having something given to you. Anyone who rents out a house knows that renters do not treat

the house as well as an owner. You have a better understanding of the value of something if you had to work or pay for it.

So what about salvation? We don’t have to work for it. It is given to us by grace. We have no physical evidence. How can we appreciate it? How can

we know its value? A few years before my dad’s death, my brother and sister bought him a truck.

He was flabbergasted. He wept when he received the gift. He knew he couldn’t afford to buy a truck and that this would probably be his last vehicle. The value of the truck was precious because it was worth more than he could pay. We find value in our salvation because we know it is beyond our ability to achieve. The law shows us that we are undeserving for salvation. It has to

be given to us by someone much greater than we. Another recent story on the internet told of sons who tracked down their dad’s

first car and brought it back to him restored in mint condition. The dad was beyond words because he had an idea of the great length his sons had gone

through to find the car. Another way we value our salvation is by understand-ing what God had to do to provide salvation for us. His “Scheme of Redemp-tion” encompasses centuries and is embodied in the horrific sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. We are incapable of fathoming all that our salvation entails, but

we know enough to recognize it came from supreme effort and love.

These grapes taste good. The fruit of salvation – indescribably delicious!

These have come so that your faith – of greater worth than gold, which per-ishes even though refined by fire – may be proved genuine and may result in praise…For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed… but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb

without blemish or defect. I Peter 1:7, 18, 19
