WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

GREETING EACH OTHER

PRELUDE “Jesus Shall Reign” ~arr. Hopson Lighting of the Candles

SCRIPTURE READING Psalm 40:1-11 p. 446

CALL TO WORSHIP (Left and Right are Congregation’s left and right, respectively) Left: Sisters and Brothers, we are asked to listen for God, to wait patiently. Right: And so we come this day, seeking to hear from our Creator. Left: As you wait, as you listen, what do you hope to hear? Right: We long to hear God’s word of love, hope, peace, comfort. Left: We long to hear God’s word of truth and faithfulness. Right: Fill us with your Spirit this hour, Holy One of Israel. Left: Give us a new song in our hearts and our mouths. Right: Fill us so we may sing your praises with our words. Left: Fill us so we may sing your praises with our actions. ALL: May our worship bring us deeper into your presence, O Lord our God. Let us

worship God.

*HYMN #260 “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) Divine and Holy One, Creator and Redeemer, you have given us as a light to the nations, yet so often we hide that light, keeping it to ourselves. We certainly want the best for your world, and your people — but too often we get tired, overwhelmed, frustrated, angry. Sometimes we try hard to spread your love, and bring about your kingdom, but when it gets tough, we step to the side and hope someone else steps up. Forgive us for our selfishness, our complacency, our anger. Strengthen us to stand up, stand strong, and be your faithful servants. Help us to share your love and not keep it to ourselves. (silence is observed for individual reflection and prayer)

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

L: Sisters and Brothers, our God is a God of restoration and healing. Know this day how deeply God loves you and receive God’s healing forgiveness.

P: Thank you Holy One for your love and forgiveness!

CHOIR ANTHEM “Grace Alone” ~Koerts

A LITANY TO HONOR REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

L: In every era, God has chosen men and women to serve the needs of God’s beloved community. Such a servant was Martin Luther King, Jr., whose birth we celebrate this day. Our country is indebted to, and thankful for, this 20th century prophet.

P: May the wisdom and words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. rekindle our faith and strengthen our walk.

L: May the deep love that Dr. King had for all people be poured into us, that we, too, might work miracles in the lives of those who in their brokenness continue to judge and hate.

P: Dr. King knew and taught that only Love can bring the healing that overcomes hatred, bitterness, and fear.

L: May his struggle for social change continue in this generation and the next. May all people come to believe that with perseverance, “We Shall Overcome.”

P: “And let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever flowing stream.” (Amos 5:24)

L: May the work of Dr. King to overcome racial injustice and its ungodly consequences continue.

P: Dr. King pursued his dream of racial equality by appealing to the conscience of those who stood against him.

L: May we continue to cultivate the nonviolent discipline of Dr. King, abandoning acts of force and violence.

P: He taught us that a heart full of grace and love is just as important as an education. L: May the spirit of Dr. King continue to flow through our daily living. P: He believed in self-respect and dignity, even though he knew that there would be

difficult days ahead. L: May we have the courage of Dr. King as we continue to stand up for justice, reconciliation

and truth, despite challenge and controversy. P: Dr. King said that war is never a victory, regardless of the outcome. L: May the redeeming peace of the risen Christ cause war and racism and hate to vanish from

the face of the earth. ALL: Dr. King went to the mountain top; he saw the Promised Land; and he reassured

us that we will get there one day. God of glory, be with us on the journey.
