The Majellan is celebrang its 70 th year milestone in 2018, but many things have changed over the past seven decades. In our digital age, newspapers and magazines are having a hard me surviving. You only have to travel by train or bus to realise how people today consume their daily intake of news and entertainment. Not too many have their heads buried in a book or a newspaper. Their smart phones and iPads command their aenon. So, Majellan publicaons has also moved into the digital age. One product is a prayer app called Bread 4Today which provides a short daily prayer and reflecon that can be read on an iPhone or other electronic device. But why is it called Bread4Today? The word bread connects to something that is at the heart of Catholic faith: the Eucharist and the presence of Jesus in the bread. We are in the ‘middle’ weekend of a series of gospel readings about bread. In today’s reading Jesus calls himself “the bread of life.” He says that “anyone who eats this bread will live forever.” For us in the Western world, bread is a basic feature of our diet. So, for Catholics, the bread of the Eucharist is a basic part of our diet. It is our spiritual food for the journey of life. We call it ‘communion’ because it brings us into a deep union with Jesus. Occasionally, we might feel like Elijah in the first reading. He had had enough and wanted to die. But God provided food and drink, giving him the strength to walk the long journey to the mountain of God. That first reading gives us an image of the Eucharist. Especially in tough mes, the bread of the Eucharist gives us strength to walk the journey of life. Our prayer app, Bread4Today, provides us with food for our spiritual needs. It has a prayer or reflecon for every day of the year. So, when you are in the bus or train on your way to work or going home, you can use it as your morning or evening prayer. It can also be used when you are feeling down or needing some inspiraon. Just as the Eucharist gives us spiritual nourishment, so does personal prayer. As the bread of the Eucharist feeds your spirit today, may daily prayer also sustain you. If Bread4Today can do that for you, then it will have served its purpose.
