    Vol. 22,

    Feb., 1978

Our regular readers have followe d us through 2 years of frustration in regard

    to

    buying

    land

    We

    were confident

    of getting

a bank loan. We located several

    lots

    that we

    thought

    would be

    suitable. Then we were disappointed

    to

    learn that we

    would

    not

    be

    granted

    a

    loan. We had land

but no money. Now we have some money, but no land The Yotsuya Christian Mission recently

sold some property near downtown Tokyo. Part

    of

this money has been put into a loan

    fund

    to

    help other missionaries; and

    part

    of that

    has

    already been specifically designated to

    us.

    This

is an unbelievable opportunityand we have every

    real estate

    man and his brother look

    ing for

    property

    near

    the

    Obirin campus.

LET'S BACK UP t's hard to really describe the problem of housing/prices

    here.

    Buying re

    quires so

    much

    money that

    we

    have considered the practicality

    of

    renting. Howeve r, rent is

    expensive,

    too,

    and continues to

    go

    higher.

    On

    top of

    that,

    most houses here are

    way

    smaller

    than American houses.

    To

    rent

    a

    house

    for

    a

    growing family

    plus

    a

    meeting room/study

    area

    would be an

    enormous amount of

    moneydown the

    drain.

    In the

    next

    ten

    years

    at

    least

    $50,000

    would

    be

    lost

    if

we continued renting. Buying seems to be

    the

    wisest use of

    the Lord's

    money

    WHAT'RE WE

    GONNA

    USE FOR

    MONEY?

    e

    have some

    cash on hand

    that we have

    received

    from you

    over

    the past

    2

    years (plus

    interest). We

    are very thankful for this.

    The figures

    on

    the

thermometer show how much we have, how

    much

    the

    loan

    will

    provide,

    and how

    much

    is still

    needed. By

    looking

    at

    the figures

only, you might think we are planning too extravagantly.

    For that

    reason,

    we

    have

    included measurements

    and

    sketches. In

    Japan

    it

    costs about twice

    as much to

    build

    as it

    would

    in

    the

    States;

    and land is

    more

    than

    twice

    as expensive. The

prices are high; but we are planning as

    economically

    as possible.
