Despite boasting an international success

and a name that is synonymous with guar-anteed media attention and front page head-lines, the project being realized by MVRDVfor the Didden family is the first one that theyare carrying out in their home city of Rotter-dam. The Didden family has lived for many

years in this great house in Rotterdam, thetop floor of a series of traditional row housesof dark brick, constructed at the end of thenineteenth century. At the request of extend-ing the building the only possibility was, ofcourse, to increase the height. The result iselementary: two structures, two simple paral-

lelograms, with a pointed roof, without deco-ration or signs of interruption.This intervention recalls another of a few

years earlier, at Ypenburg, on the outskirtsof Delft, where the only thing that distin-guished separate dwellings was the differentcolor of the individual structures. It is notthe first time that MVRDV uses color as anelement of distinction. Another example wasrepresented by the Orange House, this timein polycarbonate, which had caused somecomplaints from the neighborhood and somephotographers used to working in black and

white. Even in that case, apart from the color,the architecture was rather basic.

Here MVRDV plays with two complementa-

ry colors: red, which is used for some inte-rior walls, and blue, that covers the exterior without continuity, and the ability to shapethe building as if it were a model rather thanthe result of construction. A cool color forthe outside and a warm color for the inside,

where it combines with wood; and here thefinishing touches are kept to a minimum.Through the two structures, the designersspeak of a “crown on top of the monument,”

where the crown is the new addition and themonument is the traditional architecture.The crown is the prototype (reproducible?)

for further densification of the city, an ele-ment which is added to the existing texture,and a new life on the roofs of the city. TheDidden Village is part of series of projects in

which MVRDV and their architectural out-put was focused on the expansion of urbanand residential concentration, experimentsto “test the potential of small programs on abroader scale”, applying in architecture the-ories otherwise thought of only for the cityscale.Living space here gets 45 square meters of in-terior space and in addition 120 more square

feet of terrace. Inside the two independentstructures there are bedrooms and bath-

Nonostante vantino un successo internazionale,il loro nome sia sinonimo di attenzione mediati-ca assicurata e titoli in prima pagina quello perla famiglia Didden è il primo progetto realizzatoda MVRDV nella loro città. I Didden abitavanogià da tempo in questa grande casa a Rotterdam,all’ultimo piano di una serie di tradizionali ca-

se a schiera in mattoni scuri, costruite alla finedell’Ottocento. Alla richiesta di estensione l’uni-ca possibilità era rappresentata, ovviamente,dall’ampliamento in altezza. Il risultato è ele-mentare: due volumi, due semplici parallelepi-pedi con tetto a punta, senza decorazioni né se-gni di interruzione. Un intervento simile ricordaquello di qualche anno precedente, a Ypenburg,alla periferia di Delft, dove a distinguere le abi-tazioni era solo il colore differente dei singoli

volumi. Non è la prima volta quindi che MVRDVutilizzano il colore come elemento di distinzio-ne. Un ulteriore esempio era rappresentato dal-

la Orange House, questa volta in policarbonato,che aveva provocato qualche lamentela da partedel vicinato nonché di alcuni fotografi abituatia lavorare con il bianco e nero. Anche in quelcaso, a parte il colore, l’architettura era piuttostoelementare. Qui MVRDV giocano con due coloricomplementari: il rosso, che viene utilizzato peralcune delle pareti interne, e il blu che ricopregli esterni senza soluzione di continuità e conla capacità di plasmare la costruzione come sefosse un modello piuttosto che il risultato di unafabbricazione. Un colore freddo per l’esterno eun colore caldo per l’interno dove si abbina al

legno e anche qui a rifiniture ridotte al minimo.Attraverso i due volumi, i progettisti parlano di

una “corona in cima al monumento”. Dove lacorona è la nuova addizione e il monumentol’architettura tradizionale. La corona rappre-senta il prototipo (riproducibile?) per un’ulte-riore densificazione della città, un elementoche si aggiunge al tessuto già esistente, unanuova vita sui tetti della città. Il Didden Village

fa parte della serie di progetti e la loro produ-zione architettonica di MVRDV era focalizzataall’ampliamento della concentrazione edilizia eurbana, esperimenti atti a “testare il potenzialedi programmi piccoli su prospettive più ampie”,applicare in architettura teorie altrimenti pensa-te per la scala cittadina. L’abitazione guadagnaqui 45 metri quadrati di spazio all’interno più120 metri quadrati di terrazzo. All’interno deidue volumi, indipendenti, si trovano camere ebagni. Il costo dell’operazione è minimo poichéle spese per travi, sostegni, infrastrutture e fini-ture extra sono tarate al minimo e raggiungono

un prezzo più basso dell’equivalente di base. Neltitolo “Villaggio Diden” l’intento e il programmasuonano moderni, ricreare una sorta di villaggiocon percorsi e logiche urbane. Ed è per questoche i volumi, come plasmati prendono differentiforme. Il pavimento diventa un vaso ovale percontenere un albero, o un tavolo più qualche se-duta. I muri esterni divengono parapetti e come

cornici inquadrano parti dello skyline di Rotter-dam o diventano panche dove sedersi. La geo-metria è elementare in tutti gli elementi, l’ovaledel vaso, il parallelepipedo della costruzione e ilcilindro che contiene la scala e che costituiscel’elemento di raccordo tra la nuova addizionee i piani sottostanti dove si trovano soggiorno e

cucina. Sospeso da terra è un volume cilindricodipinto di bianco che senza toccare il pavimen-to sfonda il soffitto esistente per fuoriuscire sultetto di lecorbuseriana memoria. Se è modernonegli intenti, tuttavia questo progetto, sembrapost-moderno nelle sue forme. Costruito in ce-mento, la finitura è in poliuretano color blu euniforma qualsiasi parte del progetto, annullan-do intercapedini, infissi e ogni segno di giunzio-ne. Non esistono né gronde né aggetti. Divieneuna provocazione in blu sulla cima dei tetti diRotterdam. Se è comunque la declinazione del-le riflessioni sulla città del trio olandese, forse

l’implementazione in architettura di alcune ideepensate per la scala urbana, allo stesso tempola dimensione gigante, la lavorazione plasticarendono questo progetto piuttosto simile a unoggetto di design in fuori scala, un postmoder-no Objet Trouvé tra classico e vernacolare, dovel’architettura alla fine di tutto è un grande giocoe una grande illusione colorata.

that without touching the floor breaks the ex-isting ceiling, exiting to the roof-recalling LeCorbusier.If it is modern in intention, this project how-ever, seems post-modern in its forms. Built

of concrete, finished in polyurethane coloredblue, unifying every part of the project, can-celling gaps, framing, and every sign of junc-ture. There are neither gutters nor projec-tions. This extension becomes a provocationin blue on the rooftops of Rotterdam.Anyway, if it is the slant of this Dutch trio toreflect about cities, perhaps the implementa-tion in architecture of some ideas thought offor the urban scale, at the same time a plas-tic work of gigantic dimension, makes thisproject similar to a design object out of scale,a postmodern Objet Trouvé between classical

and vernacular, where architecture at the endis a big game and a great colored illusion.

rooms. The cost of the operation is minimalbecause the cost of beams, supports, infra-structure and extra finishes are calibrated toa minimum and achieve a price lower than thebasic equivalent. In the title “Didden Village”

the intention and program sound modern,re-creating a sort of village with paths andurban logic. And that is why the structures,as shaped take different forms. The floor be-comes an oval vase to contain a tree, or a tableand some chairs. The exterior walls becomeparapets; like frames for viewing parts of theRotterdam skyline, or sitting benches. Thegeometry is elementary in all the elements,the oval of the vase, the parallelogram of theconstruction, and the cylinder containing thestairs, which is the link between the new ad-dition and the floors below where there are a

living room and kitchen. Suspended from theground is a cylindrical volume, painted white,
