opportunities which promote academic excellence and empower our students to become leaders in our local, national, and global society.

At Prairie Middle School, our mission statement guides our beliefs and values. We believe every student attending Prairie will grow in his or her knowledge and skills to achieve academic excellence. In order to fulfill this belief, we offer engaging and rigorous curriculum to prepare our students for their future academic endeavors. The Prairie community also believes it is our responsibility to prepare our students in becoming active members of our school, neighborhoods, and society. We believe Prairie students are the hope for our future and must learn the habits of citizenship, partnership, and leadership. The values at Prairie are rooted in the beliefs we have for our students. We hold the following values as fundamental to growth and success for our Prairie Middle School students:

Safety Be where you’re expected to be. Report any concerns about the safety of yourself or others.

Ownership Take responsibility for your words and actions. Grow from your mistakes.

Achievement Be at school to attend classes and learn. Dress for success.

Relationships Use respectful language and actions with all members of the community Be kind. We will be positively reinforcing these behaviors throughout your child’s middle-school career, by use of HAWK Bucks, positive referrals and various celebrations. As part of this initiative we will conduct a weekly SOAR class to reinforce school expectations, and explicitly teach healthy social and emotional behaviors throughout the school year.

  • The Hawk Experience

Who We Are Prairie is one of the largest and most diverse schools in the state of Colorado. We have more than 1660 students who come from 70 countries and speak 40 different languages. We celebrate the fact that diversity is our strength, and cultural awareness is embraced throughout the year. Everyday our students and staff have the benefit of living in a global space that enriches our experiences and lives. The Middle Years Middle school can be one of the biggest transitions we face in life. Many reflect on their middle years as a time of hardship and discomfort. Yet, we find middle school to be one of the most fulfilling times when students learn about growing up. From coming in as a 6th grader and all the anxieties that a bigger school will bring to the 8th graders who think they are ready to take on the world, but must be ready for high school first. And in a time of change, we must always stay grounded to our values. We understand that when the world around us may be moving at a lightning pace, we know that staying grounded on our core values allows any transition to be not only be possible, but successful. At Prairie Middle School, we look at the 'middle years' as a chance to enrich our students' lives and provide a solid foundation that will serve them. There is nothing more important or more rewarding than helping our students build bright futures. There is no better place to do that than at Prairie Middle School! Grade Level and Professional Learning Community (PLC) Models Students are organized into grade level groups with a respective Counselor, Dean of Students, and Assistant Principal support system. Sixth graders classes are geographically located together to provide a “smaller school within a school setting.” Core and elective teachers work together in collaborative Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s) of job-alike professionals. They meet at a minimum weekly to collaboratively plan instruction, analyze the use of best practices, and share student data to optimize learning. A significant outcome of the PLC model is to provide a “guaranteed and viable” curriculum, aligned to state standards, that provides engaging and rigorous learning opportunities for all students. Academic Calendar The academic calendar is divided into four quarters lasting approximately nine weeks each. Core classes (Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies) meet daily, for approximately 55 minutes, throughout the entirety of the school year. Elective classes meet daily for approximately 45 minutes. Some electives (such as AVID, 7th/8th Grade World Language, 7th/8th Grade Band and 7th/8th Grade Orchestra) are yearlong classes. Other elective classes (Art, Drama, Health, Music, Physical Education/Wellness, Robotics, and Technology) are semester long classes (equal to two quarters). Academic grades in all classes are calculated each quarter. Report cards are mailed home at the conclusion of each quarter.

  • A Typical School Day The student school day extends from 8:50 AM-3:45 PM. Students will be allowed to enter the Recess Doors at 8:00 AM if they are purchasing breakfast. Hot breakfast is served in the West Cafeteria from 8:00-8:40 AM. Entrance to academic hallways begins at 8:40 AM. “Grab and Go” breakfast options are available from 8:40-8:50 AM. Afterschool buses depart at 3:52 PM from the Bus Loop on the North Side/Jewell Avenue side of the building. Late bus shuttles run Monday through Thursday and depart the Bus Loop at 4:50 PM for students participating in afterschool academic support, athletics, or clubs. While schedules vary by grade level, a typical day at Prairie Middle School consists of:

Homeroom-This is a 13-15 minute, beginning of the day class, that allows students to create a learning focus for the day. Activities may include grade checks, teacher check-ins, and planner/homework checks. Core-Core classes include Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies. These classes meet daily for approximately 55 minutes. Electives-Students will have two 45-minute elective periods daily. Electives support the development of the whole child. Elective classes are either yearlong or semester length. Advisory-Advisory class meets for 35 minutes daily. One day a week students will participate in a district-wide social emotional lesson from the Second Step Curriculum. The additional 4 days will provide for fluid academic supports. Lunch-Lunch is 30 minutes in length and provides for students “recess” outside after eating.

Structured Afterschool Opportunities Students can choose to participate in a variety of structured afterschool activities. Students who participate in extracurricular activities demonstrate stronger school connections.

Academic Tutorials-Teachers offer tutorials from 3:45-4:50 PM on designated days. Attending students receive personalized assistance, can complete missing and/or absent work, as well as seek answers to content related questions. Activities- Prairie offers a variety of clubs for students to join. Past club offerings include Honor Society, Craft Club, Math League, and Yearbook to name a few. Announcements are made on when and where clubs are held. Athletics-The Cherry Creek School District athletic program encourages participation and emphasizes teamwork and sportsmanship. No previous experience is required, and skills are taught to athletes at varying ability levels. Sports include: Track and Field, Basketball, Wresting, and Girls’ Volleyball. Soccer Club is also offered in the Spring. A fee is required for participation. Scholarships are available.

  • PowerSchool (Electronic Home-School Communication) PowerSchool is a system that allows parents to check their child’s attendance and grades. PowerSchool is available at: http://sis.ccsd.k12.co.us/portal.html. If you do not have access to a computer, please feel free to use the computers in our library. Prairie believes that we measure what we value and keeping a close eye on our students’ progress can only enhance their understanding of accountability. Colorado Academic Standards (CAS) Standards-based education in Colorado begins with clear expectations that outline what students should know and be able to do at each grade level and content area. These expectations are outlined in the Colorado Academic Standards. The Colorado Academic Standards include 10 content areas for preschool through 12th grade (dance; drama and theater arts; health and physical education; mathematics; music; reading, writing and communicating; science; social studies, visual arts, and world languages). The updated standards are constructed backwards, starting with the competencies of prepared high school graduates, to create learning expectations for what students should understand, know and be able to do at each grade level and content area. AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) AVID is a college preparatory class targeted at the student who, for some reason, has not reached his/her potential, but will benefit from completing rigorous curriculum. Nationally, AVID is a fourth-through twelfth-grade program that prepares students in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility. Students who are interested in joining AVID need to complete an application and interview process. Once accepted into the program, students will be expected to:

Maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average Enroll in an Advanced Class Participate in tutorials, note-taking, and binder checks Maintain positive citizenship

English Language Learner Supports (ELS) English Language Supports (ELS) is a program designed to teach students who speak languages other than English how to understand, speak, read, and write in English. The goal is for English language learners to experience success in the mainstream content areas while also learning English. While students are learning English, they are also learning math, science, social studies and other subjects in the school curriculum. Prairie Middle School offers a variety of ELS, sheltered, and co-taught classes for English language learners depending on their English language acquisition level. Teachers in ELS are proficient in the English language and are specifically trained to teach students who are learning English. While each student’s level of support will be based on their individual needs, the ELS program provides support to students within the context of the mainstream content-area classroom. Those supports include instructional strategies, lesson delivery, and assessments that are designed based on the student’s level of English proficiency.

  • Gifted and Talented Programming (GT) Gifted and talented students are identified through a formal process that includes achievement testing as well as observed characteristics. GT student characteristics may include: a high level of interest in mathematics, reading and writing, or the arts; strong spatial and visualization skills; strong problem-solving and logic skills; a high level of student motivation; strong organization and independent learning skills; and/or academic maturity beyond their chronological years. All students, including GT students, have the right to an appropriate education, one grounded in the recognition of their individual differences and unique learning needs. The instructional environment for gifted and talented learners should encourage and nurture inquiry, flexibility, and critical and creative thinking. All identified GT students have an Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) which contains both academic and social-emotional goals that are evaluated on a yearly basis. Our Honors Level Mathematics (Math 6/7, Math 7/8, and Algebra) and Language Arts Program (Honors LA 6, Honors LA 7, and Honors LA 8) are an accelerated and enriched sequence of academic courses that may be appropriate for GT students. These programs are designed for Grades 6–8 students who show a high level of interest and talent in mathematical thinking, reading and writing. Additionally, students identified in the Arts, have an opportunity to participate in our much celebrated performing and visual arts programs.

Student Achievement Services (SAS) Student Achievement Services offers a continuum of services for students who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Course offerings allow students to have support in regular education classes as well as direct instruction in core content areas. Our continuum of services is designed to meet the individual needs of each student with an IEP. Since an IEP is required for placement in these classes, students should consult with their case manager to enroll in these classes. Along with providing intensive supported instruction outside of the General Education classroom, SAS staff provides support through teamed taught instruction in core academic areas. These classes include Math 6-8 ad Language Arts 6-8.

    Language Arts 8

Eighth grade students will read and study a variety of texts designed to work on organization and flow in writing with special emphasis placed upon argumentative

writing and reading complex text. Throughout the school year, students will be empowered to defend their critical thinking skills in both reading and writing.

Honors Language Arts 8 Students in honors classes complete a similar curriculum as the language arts classes

but read higher level materials and supplemental texts and are held to a higher standard in writing. Students will be exposed to terms and methods beyond that which is required by state and national standards for the grade level. Students are expected

to perform more tasks semi-independently, track their own progress, and demonstrate high levels of motivation for achievement. They should read one or more years above

    grade level.

Math 8 Students begin a serious study of algebra with the learning of linear functions. With

the study of number relatively complete, the focus shifts to the abstract application of understanding arithmetic. This content will focus on three critical areas, including (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions, equations, and working with systems of linear equations; (2) developing and understanding concepts of a function, and using

functions to describe quantitative relationships; and (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, congruence,

understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem. This work will lay the foundation for success in a high school Algebra 1 course.

    Algebra I

Algebra 1 formalizes and extends the mathematics students study in Math 6, 7, and 8. The major components of study include (1) using equations and inequalities to model

real-life quantities and manipulating them to highlight quantities of interest while focusing on the underlying structures of equations and inequalities; (2) understanding concepts of a function, the use of function notations, and the structures of exponential

functions, how they compare and contrast with linear functions; (3) working with quadratic functions through a structural perspective, in comparison to linear and exponential functions. These concepts lay the foundations for analytic geometry

concepts in a subsequent geometry course and for study with different function types in Algebra 2 and other advanced math courses. This course is equivalent to the

Algebra 1 course taught at CCSD high schools.
