Thereis a thirdtype of African Grey. Althoughthereareonlytwoscientificallyrecognizedsubspecies, theCongo and

Timneh; Importers and quarantinestationshavediscoveredtwoother AGs that come from different regions andhavedistinctivedifferences. ThefirstistheCamaroon, whichcomesfrom Zaire (theywereexportedby an exporter in

Camaroon) , isapprox. 20% larger, has a moresilverappearance, larger squarerhead, and a

brightercrimsontailthanthecongo. The second isthe "Ghana", from Ghana, not Guyana located in Central

America. The Ghana issmallerthantheCongo and similar to theTimnehbut has a muchlonger neck.Length13

SexingThemale africangrey has a flatter, broaderhead and isgenerallyoneinchbigger in sizethatthefemale. Thefemale

has a longer, moreslender neck and a smallerroundedheadthanthe male. Thefemale also has a moreelipticalshape to

theeyeswhereasthemale'sismoreround. The male Congoafricangrayparrotusuallyisdarkeron thewings and has red

feathersaroundthevent.



TrainabilityKnown as the best parrot at mimicry. StudieshaveshownthattheGreycanactuallyunderstand and use human

language. Greyscanbeverytempremental, and areknown to benippy. Theyhave a tendency to pluckfeathersifbored. And

thebirdtends to bond to oneperson.



DIET:Theyfeed on seeds, nuts, fruits and berriesgatheredmostly in thetreetops. Whenfeedingtheyusuallyclimbfrombranchto

branch, ratherthanflying, and will hold thefruitor nut in itsfoot to eat.GreyParrotsareespeciallyfond of eatingtheouteroilyflesh

of theoil-palm nut. They also preferthe red fruits of theCola tragacantha, whenavailablebeingcarefulnot to eatthestone.

Theyhave also acquired a fondnessforgrain, and in West Africathey do immense damage to maizecrops. Itisalmostimpossible

to drivethemawaybecausetheybecome so bold.

REPRODUCTION and GROWTH:AfricanGreyParrotsaremonogamous. Fewdetailsareknown in the wild

aboutcourtshipbutdisplayflightsaroundnest-holeshavebeenrecorded. Thebreedingseasonseems to be variable. Breedingoccurs in

loosecolonieswitheach pair occupyingitsowntree. In captivity, copulationisprecededbythe male feedingthefemale and bymatingdances in

whichbothsexesdroopwings.One to foureggsarelaid at 3-day intervals high in a large

treecavitywheretheyareincubatedonlybythefemale. They do notuseanynesting material; eggsarelaid in thewood-dust at thebottom of

thenest-holewhichis 23 (60cm) to 78 (200cm) inchesdeep. Bothparentscareforthechicks. Thechicks will leavethenext at 2 to 3 months and

canfeedthemselvesalthoughtheparents will still attend to them and feedthemuntilabout 4 months of age.
