availability of expertise in the project

management profession.

We actively promote investment in gender

diversity to ensure that all project managers have

the potential to develop a highly rewarding

CHALLENGES IN MY CAREER

To be recognised

as Technical Leader

with strong

automotive

knowledge in a

male dominated

environment

Had to re-establish

self after coming

back from maternity

leave

Manage childcare

responsibilities with

a full time career in

engineering and as

a manager.

Strong time

management and

organisational skills

Has made me a

better leader /

manager for my

team

Being able to

establish good,

effective and long

lasting relationships

with mostly men

colleagues –

without talking

football/cricket/golf

and keeping out of

the banter…

Page 33: Practitioners and the profession: a changing landscape, 8th September 2015

33

BEING A ROLE MODEL….

Be true to yourself

Do not pretend to

be somebody that

you are not…if you

are feminine,

be…you don’t have

to change to fit in….

Grab every

opportunity to learn

and push yourself

Take any

challenges that you

face…

Very early in my

career, I had the

opportunity to work

with one of the first

women Chief

Engineers in JLR

Amazing role model

who gave me

fantastic advice…

Now that I am seen

as a role

model….only 5

female Senior

Managers out of

250 Senior

Managers in Core

engineering….

Same advice to the

female Graduates

who join JLR….

36

MANAGING STAKEHOLDERS

Three Chief Programme Engineers, three Programme Managers, three

Vehicle Engineering Managers plus an additional 10 Senior Managers and

Directors to manage in my internal department…..

How to manage….?

Understanding their needs/wants (detail versus high level/

communication cadence/success criteria)

Establishing relationships and communication forums – small if required

for in-depth technical discussions / general programme communications

events for more general feedback

Creating trust in myself and my team to deliver our commitments – i.e.

deliver and do what you say you are going to do….

Being able to operate across all levels

Managing information – correct, factual & at the right time
