Practice What You Teach

Text: 1 Timothy 4:1-16, 1. Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils. 2. Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3. Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. 4. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving. 5. For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. 6. If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, where unto thou has attained. 7. But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. 8. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 9. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. 10. For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe. 11. These things command and teach. 12. Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13. Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

14. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. 15. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. 16. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. Background: I. Timothy was a well-known companion and assistant of Paul the Apostle. II. Timothy’s mother Eunice and grandmother Lois were devout servants of God and had taught Timothy the way of the Lord. III. I Timothy was written after the release of Paul from his first Roman imprisonment. IV. The writing of this book is dated A.D. 64 or 65. Introduction I. Paul is aware that heresies will threaten the church.

A. Paul, therefore, strongly urged Timothy to stand fast in the faith.

B. Timothy was to do all in his power to fortify the churches against heresy. C. Paul’s instructions to us would certainly be the same; i.e. stand fast in the faith, fortify all other believers so that they too will be able to stand firm against heresy.

II. As Coffman further writes, the New Testament clearly foretold the coming of a guest apostacy.

A. Matthew 7:15, Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

B. Acts 20:28-30, Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

C. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, that ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means, for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Remember ye not, that, when I was with you, I told you these things? And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his own time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming. Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion,

that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

D. 2 Timothy 3:1-8, This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

E. 2 Timothy 4:1-7, I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

F. 2 Peter 2:1-3, But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

Commentary 1 Timothy 4:1, Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; I. The Spirit saith expressly, clearly says, A. The Holy Spirit spoke plainly, unequivocally about this matter. 1. There can be no doubt about what the Holy Spirit said.

2. Christ will be opposed and some believers will be led into heresey.

II. In later times,

A. Coffman wrote that all through the history of the church “men” have apostatized from “the faith”. B. Michael Moss pointed out that, “For Jesus the advent of the Messiah would usher in the last days.”

1. Acts 2:16, 17, But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

2. 2 Thessalonians 2:3,4, Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

3. 2 Timothy 3:1, This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

III. Some will abandon, shall fall away from the faith

A. “Fall away” means to depart, abandon, to rebel, to desert, to forsake, Coffman stated.

B. Lenski via Coffman stated that these conditions refer to what will exist from Christ’s first coming to his second coming.

C. Scriptures:

1. Acts 20:28-31, Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

2. I Timothy 3:9, Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

IV. Giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons, things taught by demons.

A. The devil and his demons, those under Satan’s influence, are responsible for the digression to be faced by the saints.

1. I Kings 22:22, And the LORD said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do so.

B. Seducing spirits, influences would ensnare certain believers and lead them to accept what in fact are doctrines of devils.

C. Scriptures:

1. Matthew 13:21, Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

2. Matthew 24:10, 11, And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

3. Mark 4:17, And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.

4. Luke 8:12, Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

1 Timothy 4:2, Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

I. Through the hypocrisy of men that speak lies, such teachings come through hypocritical liars.

A. Through hypocritics who speak lies, the devil has his influence.

Landmark Publications, Inc. 1045 Maynor Street, Nashville, TN 37216, U.S.A., John C. Sewell, Ph.D., Editor

9

B. Some teachers of religious error are sincerely mistaken, but others are rank, hypocritical sinners whose consciences have no feeling left.

1. With these people truth is not important

II. Branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron; whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.

A. This searing makes them insensitive to their own sins.

1. Romans, 1:18, 28-32, For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

2. Those whose consciences have been seared appear to have passed “the point of no return”.

I Timothy 4:3, Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

I. In forbidding to marry, they forbid people to marry, and…

A. Forbidding marriage would be a false teaching to the apostles.

10

B. We hear much of asceticism and celibacy in certain orders and of how this is a supposedly higher moral lifestyle.

C. Scriptures:

1. Hebrews 13:4, Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

2. I Corinthians 9:5, Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

II. Commanding to abstain from meats, order them to abstain from certain foods…

A. Scriptures:

1. Acts 10:13-16, And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

B. Choosing foods which are healthier is not under consideration here.

1. Healthy food choices are prudent.

2. Theological food restriction are in question here.

III. Which God created to be received with thanksgiving…

A. Giving thanks before meals is all together Biblical and in keeping with the will of God.

B. Christians are to be thankful 24-7!

11

C. We live in an ungrateful selfish world!

IV. By them that, those who believe and know the truth.

A. Thankfulness is an essential part of a life of faith conducted in keeping with the truth.

Note: Moss wrote that this heresy contained elements of Gnosticism, Neoplatonism, and Judaism.

I Timothy 4:4, For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

I. For everything, every creature God created is good…

A. Some societies today vary markedly from our customs regarding what is considered delicacies.

B. All may be eaten if received with thanksgiving.

C. Scriptures:

1. Genesis 1:11-13, And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, and herbs yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the third day.

2. Genesis 1:20-25, And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the

waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day. And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

II. And nothing is to be rejected…

A. Clearly the food restrictions of the Old Testament have been abrogated.

III. If it be received with thanksgiving.

I Timothy 4:5, For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

I. For its is sanctified, consecrated by, through the word of God and prayer.

A. Why is everything, every creature good and nothing is to be rejected, considered unclean?

B. It has been received with thanksgiving and sanctified through:

1. The word of God…

a. The gospel when preached revealed that all meats/foods were good, clean.

2. and prayer.

a. Thanksgiving for all God’s gifts designates them as good.

1 Timothy 4:6, If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up

13

in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

I. “Brothers and sisters” refer to the fact that the church is a spiritual family.

II. We are all, as Christians, servants of Jesus Christ.

III. Some of us are good servants and some are bad or unfaithful servants.

A. Some are variable from time to time.

IV. One thing that is required of a good servant is to teach other Christians, instruct them, in the truth of the gospel.

V. Our souls are to be nourished on the words of faith.

VI. Matthew 28:16-20, Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.

VII. Timothy had followed sound teaching. He had avoided unsound/unhealthy teaching.

1 Timothy 4:7, But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

I. We are to avoid false teaching, profane myths and old wives’ tales.

II. We are to train ourselves in god-like-ness.

III. I Timothy 4:1-3, Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their consciences seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

I Timothy 4:8, For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

I. Physical exercise is beneficial.

II. Godliness is much more beneficial in both this world and the world to come (heaven).

I Timothy 4:9, This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.

I. We can fully accept this statement in verse 8 with absolute confidence!

II. Godliness is valuable in every way having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.

III. This statement is honorable and certain.

I Timothy 4:10, For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

I. To the end we may be saved, we toil and struggle.

II. We endure hardships as Christians because we have our hope centered on the living God.

III. Christ is the only Savior of the world.

IV. In particular Christ saves those who believe.

I Timothy 4:11, These things command and teach.

I. There are certain things on which we must insist, on which there can be no compromise!

II. These must be taught accurately and fully.

I Timothy 4:12, Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

I. By living mature Christian lives, young people can avoid disparagement. Age is despised in our society.

II. Timothy was to be an example for other Christians to follow.

III. Speech

A. Ephesians 4:15, 29, 31, Love should always make us tell the truth. Then we will grow in every way and be more like Christ, the head of the body. Stop all your dirty talk. Say the right thing at the right time and help others by what you say. Stop being bitter and angry and mad at others. Don’t yell at one another or curse each other or ever be rude.

1. This is what we preach! Let’s practice it!

B. James 4:11, My friends, don’t say cruel things about others! If you do, or if you condemn others, you are condemning God’s Law. And if you condemn the Law, you put yourself above the Law and refuse to obey either it or God, who gave it.

IV. Conduct

16

A. Titus 2:3, Tell the older women to behave as those who love the Lord should. They must not gossip about others or be slaves of wine. They must teach what is proper…by word to deed.

B. I Thessalonians 2:10, Both you and God are witnesses that we were pure and honest and innocent in our dealings with you followers of the Lord.

V. Love

A. Romans 8:28, We know that God is always at work for the good of everyone who loves him. They are the ones God has chosen for his purposes.

B. 1 John 3:11, 14, 16, 17, 18, 23, From the beginning you were told that we must love each other. Our love for each other proves that we have gone from death to life. But if you don’t love each other, you are still under the power of death. We know what love is because Jesus gave his life for us. That’s why we must give our lives for each other. If we have all we need and see one of our own people in need, we must have pity on that person, or else we cannot say we love God. Children, you show love for others by truly helping them and not merely by talking about it. God wants us to have faith in his Son Jesus Christ and to love each other. This is also what Jesus taught us to do.

IV. Purity

A. I Peter 1:22, You obeyed the truth, and your souls were made pure. Now you sincerely love each other. But you must keep on loving with all your heart.

B. I Timothy 5:22, Don’t be too quick to accept people into the service of the Lord by placing your hands on them. Don’t sin because others do, but stay close to God.

I Timothy 4:13, Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

I. Until Paul arrived on the scene, Timothy was to:

A. Give attention to the public reading of the scriptures. This was in that day of the Old Testament Scriptures, and certain early Christian writing.

B. To exhorting.

C. To teaching.

II. We must be leading an exemplary life to be effective in exhorting and teaching.

A. “Don’t do as I do. Do as I say do” won’t cut it.

B. “I can’t hear what you say because what you do thunders so loudly in my ears.”

I Timothy 4:14, Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

I. God given abilities are not to be neglected, but are to be cultivated.

II. This gift of the Spirit was bestowed through prophecy.

III. This gift was imparted through the laying on of hands.

A. Numbers 27:18, The Lord answered, “Joshua son of Nun can do the job. Place your hands on him to show that he is the one to take your place.”

B. Matthew 19:13-15, Some people brought their children to Jesus, so that he could place his hands on them and pray for them. His disciples told the people to stop bothering him. But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and don’t try and stop them! People

who are like these children belong to God’s kingdom.” After Jesus had placed his hands on the children, he left.

C. Luke 13:10-13, One Sabbath, Jesus was teaching in a Jewish meeting place, and a woman was there who had been crippled by an evil spirit for eighteen years. She was completely bent over and could not straighten up. When Jesus saw the woman, he called her over and said, “You are well now.” He placed his hands on her, and right away she stood up straight and praised God.

D. Acts 6:5, 6, This suggestion pleased everyone, and they began by choosing Stephen. He had great faith and was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they chose Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and also Nicolaus, who worshipped with the Jewish people in Antioch. These men went to the apostles. Then the apostles prayed and placed their hands on the men to show that they had been chosen to do this work.

E. Acts 13:2,3, While they were worshipping the Lord and going without eating, the Holy Spirit told them, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul to do the work for which I have chosen them.” Everyone prayed and went without eating for a while longer. Next, they placed their hands on Barnabas and Saul to show that they had been appointed to do this work. Then everyone sent them their way.

I Timothy 4:15, Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

I. Timothy was to practice these principles.

II. He was to devote himself fully to these instructions.

III. In this way people would be able to see/observe his progress/Christian growth.

I Timothy 4:16, Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

I. We are to pay close attention to ourselves.

II. In Christian living we are to consistently continue.

III. By true living and true teaching, we save ourselves and our hearers.

IV. Faithfulness is a lifetime endeavor.

Conclusion

I. Take time to be holy, Speak oft with thy Lord; Abide in Him always, and feed on his word. Make friends of God’s children; Help those who are weak; Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

II. Take time to be holy, The world rushes on; Much time spend in secret with Jesus alone; By looking to Jesus, Like Him thou shalt be; Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.

III. Take time to be holy, Let Him be thy Guide, and run not before Him, Whatever be tide; In joy or in sorrow, Still follow thy Lord, And looking to Jesus, Still trust in His Word.

IV. Take time to be holy, Be calm in thy soul; Each thought and each motive Beneath His control; Thus led by His Spirit To fountains of love, Thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.
