  • E KON KRISHNOKALI!

Rabindranath portrayed Krishnokali, an imaginary young girl in

an idyllic setting of a village in Bengal. Then came the famine

of 1943 and partition of Bengal in 1947. The Krishnokalis of

once happy and peaceful villages, in search of food migrated to

the streets of Kolkata in droves. There also they faced hunger

and lack of jobs, and ultimately died in the streets and

alleyways of the cruel city in droves. Today hunger is no more,

but Krishnokalis in the streets face men, ready with their lust

and acid-bomb to disfigure. Yet Krishnokalis today look for a

future devoid of poverty, disgrace and sexual predation.
