Primary Optical area

This is the area of optical view u look at first when looking at this movie. poster. The main title is “Bridget jones” movies the colours show that the film is about her and people will look at the title first because it’s the biggest area on the poster.

The terminal optical area, the main character is right at the front of the poster using the mode of direct and then the other two characters are using indirect mode. This represents a love triangle and indicates what the film is going to be about.

Colours of the poster show us lust and love which shows the audience it’s going to be a love.

The primary optical area when you first look at this poster the title of the film, the title is bold and black and stands because of the light background.

When analyzing a poster, you should consider the following:

What are the main colours used in the poster? What do they connote?

The main colours used in this poster is dark tones and dark colours, there is a main colour theme of grey but then has a quarter of the poster where there is a big splash of dark red which indicates blood, but the main colours of the film poster are grey and red, these colours connote negative aspects the colours are dull and lacking colour which shows us also that the film isn’t going to pleasant and

the genre of the film which

is horror.

What symbols are used in the poster?

The symbols of the skull on the wall which shows death and the little girl wearing a white robe shows purity and innocence, a mixture between death and life.

What are the main figures/objects/background of the poster?

There aren’t really any objects in this film poster there is a a old tape recorder which isn’t really a main optical point for the audience so you really need to look close to see it, there is a little girl which shows us as an audience it’s going to involve children which is very pleasant. The background is a grey old wall.

The terminal area of optical view is the face of in blood, it’s a disturbing and we wonder as we don’t know what this face is and it makes it a mystery. In the film poster there is direct and indirect with the face looking out and the little girl walking away.

The colour scheme of this poster is Anchorage, which is a juxtaposing of colours with the light grey background and the dark red colour.

Setting Character Narrative Iconography Style

Blair Witch Trailer analysis-

The Blair witch is a 2016 horror film; the film is sequel to the first Blair witch project, while watching the trailer there are many things that you look at such as setting, characters, narrative, iconography and style. The setting in the film is very clear and is the main feature of the film which is a forest, the forest is where 90% of the film is taken place, from the trailer most of the film is in the forest which you can also see in the film poster has trees showing it is within a forest and woods. This setting is a typical setting and location for a horror film, “found footage in the forest” it makes the audience see that the film has horror gene conventions. The character in the trailer is also very clear you have the good looking characters and you can easily identify who people are and you can already predict what will happen to the characters because the film has clear indications of a horror, there are 6 main character u can see three women and three men, already u can see there will be a final girl from a scene of a girl alone trapped in a small tunnel so from different main points of nick

lacy. The narrative in trailer isn’t clear and doesn’t show the narrative but different points in the trailer show us what the narrative might have such as one of the main characters talking about going back to find his sister and other factors such as the final girl. The other points we can see I the trailer is the lighting and editing, as the film starts its high key lighting, slow paced and the characters are happy and excited, but as the trailer goes on and they are in the setting the lighting is a lot of more dark and dull, it’s much quicker because it’s getting to the end and you can see I the film more and more people I the group are disappearing. Things such as these all are a use of anchorage all the conventions are shown to the audience.

The style from the trailer we can clearly see that it’s hand held footage following from the first Blair which film so we can also see conventions from the first film so it’s also clear it is a sequel and it’s a horror because most horrors are hand held. The style of this trailer is very much horror genre because of the hand held footage style, you can also get the horror conventions from the music, lighting props and content within the trailer. The style is the Blair witch is “Found Footage”.

There are so many iconography contents within this trailer such as Blood, Darkness, Abandoned locations, Forests and woods, Red and black colour schemes and abstract editing. All these different points that are in the trailer show me and the audience it is a horror genre and the people who like the genre of horror will easily see it’s a horror.

In the trailer there is the use of wooden voodoo sticks, these symbols are used a lot in the original Blair witch showing the audience that is it a sequel to the first one and also another genre convention of horror because there are mainly used in a negative and scary way. This symbol Is also used as the main image in the poster which is just another massive indication of the genre of horror and also the poster has just this voodoo stick image nothing else showing us the mystery of the Blaire witch.

Exit Poll Results

For this task I had to create an exit poll for the film Blair witch which is a new horror film out in cinemas now, after a group of people went to see this film I created an Exit poll which is a questionnaire with questions all about the the film and the person’s individual information, there was ten questions on the exit poll and I sent the exit poll to 10 people including a variety of people including men and women, people with different social classes and different ages so there is a wide range of an audience. I used the software survey monkey to create and carry out my exit poll, I created ten questions and sent the exit poll to 10 people who went to watch the Blair witch film, I got ten responses and I’m going to summarise my results and see how different people heard about the film and the marketing techniques the producers used the produce the film. I also asked some demographics questions such as gender, age, occupation and where they live. I did this exit poll because I wanted to find out what people thought about the film overall and how people found out

about the film and to see how the producers marketed the film.

In the first couple of questions I asked some questions such as what is your gender, age, your job if they did have a job and where they lived, the age of response was ages 15-25 and there was only one response I got that was from the age group of 35, the age group was very clearly a teenage/young adult audience than an older audience, the film age restriction was a 15 so the producers of the film would of targeted the film at teenagers and from the other information I got back from the exit polls it shows most of the people heard about the film from social media and teenagers are the heart of social media.

Page 11: Pr1 research types

Kieran Jackson Unit 6 Research techniques

In this question I just simply asked where people live, I asked this question because it was a part of people’s demographics which would help me see how different people lived and if there were any differences in different locations about the film, the film Blair witch has been shown nationally across the UK so there shouldn’t have been issues with people not being able to see this film. People from this exit poll live in Manchester, Swinton and across the greater Manchester.

I asked a part of demographics the gender of the person, there wasn’t much difference but there still was a clear gender difference between male and female, out of the ten I sent to carry out the survey 30% were female and 70% were male, the film didn’t have any aimed gender the film did have male and female character and wasn’t aimed at any gender it was for both genders. To make this a bit more fair make sure the its fairer and ask more people and make the gender a fair question. But more male did go and see the film who like horror films.

In this question I asked peoples favourite film genre it was head to head with horror and comedy, I expect people

Page 12: Pr1 research types

Kieran Jackson Unit 6 Research techniques

who went and saw the Blair witch to have their favourite as horror but comedy was the most voted, 30% chose horror,10 % action, 40% action, 10% SC-fi and 10% other. From the film most people do like horror as their genre but I would of thought people would have liked horror more. From the posters and trailers there isn’t any indication of a targeted gender but to make sure the results are fair I would make to give the questionnaire to 50% male and 50% female so it’s a fair exit poll and I can the information clearer.

In this question I asked how people found out about the film, I gave different choices such as word of mouth, social media, TV adverts, radio or I added another option if people heard from a different choice I gave , from the ten people the most way people heard of the film Blair witch was from social media which got 54% out of 100 heard the film from social media, 18% was from word of mouth and 18% from TV adverts, from these results I can clearly see it is the age what he produces of the film market the Blair witch film towards teenagers, the produces use social media because they know teenagers and young people enjoy horror and social media is a massive part of most people’s lives and especially teenagers and young adults so by from my results I can see that social media has been a massive use of marketing

used by this film producers.

Summary of marketing techniques available to media producers

In this report I am going to talk and discuss the marketing techniques used to produce the film “Blair witch”, In Unit 6 I have done many tasks such as talk about different research techniques such as primary and secondary research, then I discussed different types of genre and how researching can be linked towards genre. The film Blair witch had a trailer and a poster out, this was linked to the marketing of the film I had to analyse both the trailer and poster. I had to look at the colour, the conventions and I also researched into the Gutenberg Design Theory and put this theory in analysing the poster. I then looked into the trailer and analysed the trailer, I used Nick Lacey theory of genre elements as constituting the 5 key areas, I used this to look into the trailer. Including this work I also carried out an exit poll for people who watched the film “Blair witch”. In the exit poll I found information such as demographics of people who watched, I asked some marketing questions such as how people found out about the film and why they wanted to go watch the film and if they liked the film. The exit poll helped me to see if the marketing towards the film was successful.

Overall I feel the marketing techniques used to market this film were successful and did the main purpose the produces wanted to do, starting with how they made the film known, the trailer was released a few months before the film was coming out and after analysing the trailer it really did make me want to go see the film and especially if you are a fan of the genre of horror it would make you want to go and see the film, the overall look of the trailer was great and was like a little film it had that much detail In it, I feel the trailer was successful because it included all of the genres conventions and because of the famous brand of “ Blair witch “ when I carried out exit poll I asked how people found and what they used to find it such as a big percentage of people I asked used found social media to find the trailer because it got posted of social media, from the exit poll peoples responses were mainly positive because people enjoyed the film which also give me clear

Page 15: Pr1 research types

Kieran Jackson Unit 6 Research techniques

information that the marketing for the film was good. Similar with the poster I feel that was also successful because it was on social media too.

The trailer included iconography, character, style, a little bit of narrative and setting, these were all in nick lacy, it had the genre conventions of horror it was very clear, personally the trailer and the poster was an anchorage with the colour and the text it made me excited and want to go and watch the film I love horror films and young people in this day and age love the genre of horror so I think the Blair witch had a successful trailer and poster and used research techniques to find out how to get the film known, it used social media to promote the film and the film already has a box office net of  35.7 million. The Blair witch project is a viral market sensation and from the 1999 Blair witch which was a Turing point is horror history, this also helped the marketing successful.

The Blair witch used different marketing uses such as posters, radio, TV and internet advertisements, trailers and promotional interviews with the cast. The film is a big thing in the horror industry I feel the fil, had a successful camping they made people go watch the film from there uses of marketing it used social media as the main use to promote the film and was successful.
