Pullman is a close-knit family and a caring and supportive community, where public safety, social services, education, wellness, environment, economic development and infrastructure are topics that we value. As we strive to continually reach our future vision for Pullman, our qualities are unmistakable.
The small-town comfort is clear for residents and visitors alike. In addition to athletic and cultural amenities provided by Washington State University, our local theatres, school district and Parks and Recreation department are active and rewarding for all ages.
We are surrounded by farmland richly defined by the highs and lows of the Palouse. What is ‘the Palouse’? A region 3-4,000 miles in size, filled with distinct geological formations created by a wave of volcanic activity millions of year ago, followed by floods from Montana, then fine silt from prehistoric wind storms. All of these forces created the beauty of the gently rolling hills, with soil so fertile for the wheat, peas, barley and lentils that are abundantly produced in our region.
With plenty to do and to see, the Pullman Chamber of Commerce is close at hand to offer more suggestions. Stay current with our local events at pullmanchamber.com. Discover the three legs of the Palouse Scenic Byway, an incredible 208-mile journey through the area at palousescenicbyway.org. Save the date and return to visit us for the National Lentil Festival on August 17th-18th, 2018. For more information visit lentilfest.com
Four seasons, light traffic, incredible photo opportunities and friendly faces make Pullman a great place to Play, Stay and Grow!

PHOTOGRAPHING THE PALOUSE
The Palouse region offers unparalleled beauty, a unique landscape, rural charm, four distinct seasons, and thousands of acres of outstanding photo opportunities, however, 98% of the land in Whitman County is privately owned and landowners do not need to post trespassing signs. Please stay on the roads and off property that does not belong to you. Heavy farm equipment uses county roads often, please pull your vehicle far to the side, so that you do not interrupt their travel.
Need a Discover Pass in Pullman? Get one at Walmart at 1690 SE Harvest. For a complete list visit wdfw.wa.gov/licensing/vendors/county/Whitman/

A WALKING TOUR OF PULLMAN
Stroll the history of downtown through architecture and discover important moments of our region with a self-guided brochure available through the Pullman Chamber and in key spots around the city. This endeavor is a collaboration of the WSU School of Design & Construction, the Historic Preservation Commission of the City of Pullman, and the WSU Center for Civic Engagement, among many others.
Late spring and early summer are certainly the best times of the year for photographing greens and then the golden fields of wheat. May and early June often have less stable weather, resulting in a bit more of a gamble for photographers on a tight schedule, but also hold greater potential for dramatic light. Winter in the Palouse is often gray, but a clear sunrise over fields freshly dusted with snow can be a real prize to a photographer lucky enough to be out at the right time. This is also the best time for raptor viewing.
Everybody’s doing it. Find photos/post photos of the Palouse on facebook.com/PicturePerfectPalouse

ROSALIA
Steptoe Battlefield marks the location where the last Indian victory over the U.S. Army occurred in May of 1858. This historic battle with 158 mounted troops, facing between 600 and 1,200 warriors, ended with a cease-fire that gave an opportunity for Colonel Steptoe’s escape back to Fort Walla Walla. Check out the Rosalia Museum for exhibits on this, as well as a meteorite that was found near Rosalia. For information on the town, stop at their Visitor’s Center, which is housed in a renovated Texaco Station, originally built in 1923, and now features an electric vehicle charging station.
TEKOA
Halfway between Spokane and Pullman on scenic highway 27, Tekoa is the perfect stop for those with a passion for photography, bicycling, golf, farming, and history. Visit the landmark art deco style Empire Theatre built in 1940. Order a latte at the coffee shop next door and then tour 3 floors of the Tekoa Museum. Stay for a meal at one of their hometown restaurants.
Photographic opportunities surround Tekoa, including the old Milwaukee Railroad Trestle, hang gliders floating off Tekoa Mountain,
1909 Old City Hall building, and nearby Steptoe Butte. You’ll see a bounty of wheat, barley, lentils, and garbanzo beans in the fields. Tekoa is a thriving community that supports over 20 small businesses and an airport. For more information, or to arrange a tour of one of the landmarks call City Hall at (509) 284-3861. WESTColfax, Almota, Snake RiverCOLFAX
A community that is alive with small town friendliness and serves as the county seat. Colfax was named in honor of Schuyler Colfax, who was vice president during President U.S. Grant’s first administration (1869-73). James A. Perkins was cofounder and the first permanent resident of Colfax. Shortly after his arrival in 1870, he began building a log cabin in which the first Republican convention in the county was held in 1872. A visit to this charming town might include a stop at a local coffee shop or restaurant, a round of golf at the beautiful 9-hole course situated on the Palouse River, or viewing the latest art exhibit at The Center at Colfax Library.

LACROSSE
Small Stone Houses were built between 1934 and 1936 by Clint Dobson, a local businessman. Three houses and three cabins were built of basalt stones gathered from the area as rental units for local farm hands and workers. These quaint little houses are in the process of fundraising toward renovation. Stop at the beautifully restored LaCrosse Market and Gathering Place.
SOUTHColton, UniontownCOLTON
The Colton story began in 1878 when L.J. Wolford, Roy Woodworth and Dr. Cole, being dissatisfied with the proprietor of Uniontown, decided to found a town of their own. The name came from the first three letters of Dr. Cole’s last name and the last three letters of Mr. Wolford’s son, Clinton. Visit St. Gall’s Catholic Church built in 1905 which retains the original architecture and stained-glass windows. Schedule some target practice at the Colton Gun Club. Colton is famous for its holiday lights which can be viewed from the comfort of your car anytime in December.
UNIONTOWN
Settled by German immigrants from Minnesota in the 1870s’, Uniontown offers a great experience for those who stop. When the Dahmen Barn was donated to the community in 2004, volunteers rolled up their sleeves and donated over 5,000 hours to transform the building into an artisan center. Located behind the famous fence of over 1,000 iron wagon wheels, this fully accessible facility provides studio space for artists and hosts live performances, special artist receptions and offers classes and workshops. Be sure to get up close and personal to Wheeletta Wholesteele, the larger-than-life metal cow sculpture adjacent to the highway. Stop in and see St. Boniface Church, the first consecrated Catholic Church in the state of Washington. It houses the original five altars, statues, stained glass, stenciled décor and oil painted Stations of the Cross. Tours are available. Pick up some coffee and fresh baked goodies at the New Sage Baking Company. A great stop for treasure hunting with half a dozen antique and second-hand shops. Pullman | PLAY >> TASTE 2322 Pullman | PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS
Time of Year Velvety green hills appear on the Palouse in late April and peak near late June, with wildflowers growing mostly on uncultivated areas during May and June. Grass fields are harvested beginning in late June to early July, and harvest of golden crops occurs around late July-early September, depending on the location and weather.
Time of Day Generally, photographing the Palouse in the early morning or late afternoon/early evening provides the best light needed for showing off the shapes of hills and textures of fields and barn wood. Low side-lighting at these times creates shadows that make the hills more visible and dramatic. If you don't have much time to photograph, concentrate your efforts during these time periods.
Encourage Your Creativity Photograph with your own creative spirit! Popular photographic locations are photographed repeatedly — remember, the Palouse is not just about the hills! Consider farm equipment, waterways, flora, fauna, close-ups, non-cultivated scenes, people and towns.
Change your physical relationship to the landscape to see something new. Crouch low to the ground, lay on your back or side, walk over a hill, get off the trail, shoot in "lousy" weather or lighting conditions. Try breaking some photographic “rules” by using blur or low light, a cell phone camera, or creative post processing effects. All of these things can result in unique photos.
Lenses A wide angle lens is helpful for depicting expansive landscapes. Composing your picture with an interesting foreground subject, such as a rock outcrop or flowers, will give perspective to a scene which also contains a more distant landscape. Use a small aperture to bring all parts of the scene into the best focus possible.
Create more abstract landscape images by using a long lens to capture a narrow section of the scenery. When photographing from a distance with a long lens, the Palouse hills can appear interestingly compressed and rippled. If the atmosphere isn't clear, the haze lends a softness to the photo which can be painterly and interesting.
Carry A Tripod A tripod allows you to use slower shooting speeds without blur resulting from camera movement. This allows you to choose a small aperture (higher f-stop), which provides greater depth of field (the area of the scene that is in focus). You won’t need or want a tripod for every shot, but when you find yourself viewing gorgeous light over a broad landscape, you'll be glad you have it with you, especially if you want to print very large sharply focused photographs.
Ask Permission Returning the kindness to landowners who are welcoming to the cars and photographers stopped on their roadsides and driveways can go a long way toward keeping these locals amenable to future visits. Barns that appear abandoned, seemingly deserted homesteads, and cultivated fields in Idaho and Washington are not public domain. Get permission to enter agricultural fields and to photograph close to barns and other private property and graciously thank landowners whenever possible.

Pullman | GROW >> HISTORY 3130 Pullman | GROW >> WELCOME
WELCOME TO PULLMANOn behalf of The Pullman Chamber of Commerce, I am thrilled to welcome you to our community. Whether you are a new resident, an incoming student or simply a visitor to our wonderful town, I encourage you to immerse yourself in all that Pullman has to offer.
People often ask me what it is that makes Pullman so special. For me, it comes down to the following:
QUALITY OF LIFE
Pullman’s affordability and safety make it an exceptional place to live, study, do business and make a home. We were recently ranked #8 on Safewise’s Safest College Towns in America. Our schools consistently land among the best in Washington State. If you’re looking for a good place to raise a family, this is it.
RECREATION
The Palouse area is a major recreational hub in the Inland Northwest. From fishing on the Snake River and biking the Palouse Scenic Byway to hiking our trails and photographing wildlife, there is an abundance of opportunities to get outdoors.
Pullman is also filled with parks, playfields and miles of pathways, which lands us at #10 in the nation for “Walk to Work” communities (streetsblog.org).
Our town is also home to several golf courses, with Palouse Ridge at Washington State University rated as the 2nd best college golf course in the country (Links Magazine).
WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY
Pullman is home to Washington State University, a beautiful, world-class research university with top-notch athletics. WSU’s multiple Division 1 sports teams is known as one of the toughest and loudest places for visiting teams to play. WSU also provides countless educational and cultural opportunities to residents and visitors alike.
DINING & ENTERTAINMENT
Pullman’s Main Street and historic downtown are home to stylish boutiques, delicious restaurants, movies, theatre, laser tag, mini golf and karaoke.
Summer in Pullman is not to be missed. Each July, Pullman hosts one of Eastern Washington’s premier fireworks shows. In August, the National Lentil Festival comes to town, drawing thousands of visitors to celebrate the versatile crop, watch cooking competitions, drink craft beer, take in a great parade and listen to national musical artists on our main stage.
Again, welcome to Pullman. We hope you enjoy your time in our beautiful town. We’re so glad you’re here.
Best,
Tony PostonPresident, Pullman Chamber of Commerce
GROW HISTORY Located at the junction of three streams (South Fork of the Palouse River, Missouri Flat Creek and Dry Creek) in what is now the downtown area Pullman (first known as “Three Forks”) has a rich history going back to the 1870’s. First on the site was Bolin Farr from Missouri who settled on present day Park Street and later built a house there. Second was Daniel McKenzie who came in 1877 and built a small home approximately on the present-day location of the Manor Lodge on Paradise Street.
In 1881 Farr and McKenzie platted the town site. The town’s application for a post office called “South Palouse” was rejected by the Post Office Department.
The next application with the town name of Pullman was accepted. One theory is that the adopted name came from George Pullman, the king of the great railroad sleeping car. When informed of the town’s action, the
railroad magnate reportedly donated $50 to start a city library.
Soon after, McKenzie invited Mark True to come from Moscow and establish a hotel here. The result was the Palace Hotel located on the southeast corner of Paradise and Kamiaken Streets. The town’s first artesian well was discovered while drilling a well for the hotel. These wells soon attracted newcomers to the area. Railroads came from the west and the north and the town grew and incorporated in 1888.
After Washington gained statehood in 1889, there was fierce competition among the towns east of the Cascades to be the location of the land grant college. The award went to Pullman, the “Artesian City”, and the town was forever changed. The Washington State College was established on the northeast part of Pullman in 1889 opening with 21 students, and the town entered a new era. That small school is now Washington State University with branches in other parts of the state.

PULLMAN IS BUSINESS FRIENDLY!Rich Ecosystem helps small businesses thrive in Pullman and nearby communities
Nestled in the picturesque southeastern corner of Washington State in a region popularly known as the Palouse, the City of Pullman offers business resources to help enterprising entrepreneurs maneuver through various stages of a business lifecycle. This article briefly describes five local programs worthy of consideration. For more information on any of these programs, Pullman-based Small Business Development Center advisor or the Chamber can recommend the best course of action.
In the Seed Stage, the entrepreneur typically goes through business planning, legal considerations and market research to help turn an idea into a product or service.
In the Startup Phase, the business owner may be balancing various competing priorities to help make the business go.
As the hard work of planning and operating the business starts to pay off, the business owner finds itself in Growth Phase, adding employees, launching new product lines, adding new locations or acquiring another company.
Ultimately, the business owner enters a Transition Phase in which the owner thinks about the end game, including selling the business, transitioning to a successor or wind it down entirely.
Five locally based programs worthy of consideration:
The annual 5-day intensive “Be the Entrepreneur Bootcamp” in early June, offers an opportunity to quickly learn business basics, create your business proposition, and receive honest feedback from skilled mentors and business leaders.
Business Plan Competition during Spring semester at the Washington State University offers university and high school students a chance to compete for thousands of dollars to start their businesses.
Innovation Corps, aka (I-Corps), is an 8-week program in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters to validate the market viability of a business idea. Open to all entrepreneurs through a selection program, this NSF funded program is thriving in its third year at Washington State University.
Small Business Development Center, a federally funded program with matching funds from WSU Washington State University serves as an advisor for enterprising entrepreneurs through all stages of a business lifecycle.
Lastly, Startup Whitman and Southeast Economic Development offer entrepreneurs, startups and small businesses a suite of consulting, mentoring and educational programs and services designed to jump start and grow local businesses, and connect with federal, state, regional and local resources to promote economic vitality by creating and retaining jobs through business, tourism and community development.

32 Pullman | GROW >> RETIRE
REASONS TO RETIRE HERE!The national trend for ‘boomers’ is to retire to college towns because of the various amenities. Locals get the advantage of living within an eight-mile radius of two distinguished universities, yet in a small community. Pullman is located 75 miles south of Spokane, and just minutes from Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport. Amid wheat fields, sits a world class university, providing a Pac 12 college life with sport and spirit. Whether you are a Washington State University alum or not, you’ll learn to speak ‘Coug’ through athletic events on campus.
HIGH QUALITY OF LIFE, with a modest cost of living. Not only is Pullman home of WSU, it also has several startup tech companies who have chosen to grow roots right here on the Palouse! There are many rental and retirement living options, the median housing price is below the national average, there are no state income taxes and the property taxes are low.
WORLD CLASS PHYSICIANS AND FACILITIES. Pullman Regional Hospital is an award winning critical access hospital recognized for its 5-star care and patient experience. With a comprehensive medical staff of approximately 60 primary care and specialist physicians, we provide quality care close to home. Our Emergency Department is here 24/7 and has a partnership with Life Flight Network that assures transfer to higher level acuity hospitals in Spokane and Seattle if necessary.
NUMEROUS CULTURAL OFFERINGS. Pullmanites have the option to enjoy a plethora of cultural events and activities provided by departments and clubs from WSU, as well as with the talents of our local community. Residents and visitors alike may enjoy a production at one of our theatres. A neighborhood band might take you home with classic rock or a headliner the likes of Elton John, Taylor Swift or ZZ Top could give you a night to remember.
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED FOR LOW-CRIME
RANKINGS. Safewise.com reported that Pullman was rated the eighth safest city in Washington in 2017. With less than 20 crimes per 1,000 people, Pullman is a community where you can feel safe.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR CIVIC ENGAGEMENT or even part time employment. Pullman features dozens of nonprofit organizations that are extremely active in the community. Whether your interest is baking cookies to benefit the town’s 4th of July Celebration, or would prefer pouring beer at the National Lentil Festival to support a local organization such as Whitman County Humane Society, Pullman has numerous options for community minded folk.
EXTENSIVE CITY-WIDE TRANSIT AND TRAIL SYSTEMS. Pullman Transit offers bus service on dozens of routes all days of the week throughout Pullman. In addition, they also operate Dial-A-Ride, a senior service with ADA integration. The trail system is great for daily walks, bike rides or even commuters! In addition, Coast Transportation will take just about anyone anywhere at just about any time (donations appreciated).
READY, SET, ACTION. Retirees benefit from an extremely active Senior Citizen’s Association through Pullman Parks & Rec. Are you up for a bus trip to a Best of Broadway performance in Spokane? Have you been to the Peach Festival in Greenbluff? A Cowboy Supper show in Stateline? The opportunities are all around!

Advocacy: The Pullman Chamber of Commerce is your voice to government in Pullman, Olympia and Washington D.C. We concern ourselves with issues that impact business and the livability of the Pullman community at large. We work closely with city and county officials as well as our state legislators. We are currently part of a Grassroots Alliance with the Association of Washington Business. When you join the Pullman Chamber of Commerce you are being heard. Networking: The Pullman Chamber of Commerce provides numerous opportunities to meet other business leaders in our community.
General Membership Luncheons: Normally scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month at noon, these catered events are opportunities to network with other business leaders, learn about the Pullman community in general, or learn about current business issues.
Business After-Hours: These events provide opportunities for host businesses to show off their facilities and products, as well as an informal time of socializing and “catching up with your fellow Chamber members.” Food and beverages are provided by the host business.
Chamber Website & Directory: The Pullman Chamber of Commerce website contains a full directory of our members including business name, address, phone number, and web link. The companion printed directory within this Activities Guide also includes community profile information. Approximately 15,000 copies are distributed yearly. Members are listed alphabetically, as well as by business category. Our website receives thousands of hits a month, increasing the visibility of our member businesses.
Chamber Email News: This weekly Thursday morning email keeps members up to date about various chamber activities and projects, area workshops and events that would be useful to our members.
Online Events Calendar: Members and nonmembers may post upcoming events on our online calendar, which is viewed and utilized by several other agencies to determine what is happening locally.
Pullman Community Update: Members may submit information about their business for inclusion on the chamber pages of the Pullman Community Update. This is a free service for Chamber members. Members need to provide 50 inserts at a time to the Chamber office. Information should be no larger than one sheet of 8 1/2” x 11” paper (can be folded).
Seminars and Workshops: Frequently, the Chamber sponsors workshops to help equip you in your business dealings or to update you on changing regulations.
Certificates of Origin: This official stamp provides proof to businesses and governments that the goods being shipped were produced in the United States. Many international firms request such proof.
Grand Openings and Ribbon Cuttings: These events are provided for new members as a welcome to the community and are also available for business members who are expanding or dedicating new facilities.
