This guide describes the configuration of the PPTP-Client running on Apple iOS. While the screenshots of this guide are taken on an iPad, you can also use it to configure a PPTP connection on the iPhone.

Configuration and test runs should be made from an unrestricted WiFi hotspot prior to using the VPN on mobile broadband networks. Mobile broadband carriers might block VPN traffic on their networks, thus making it hard to debug dysfunctional configurations.

Introduction

Step 3Choose to Add VPN Configuration… from the VPN settings.

Step 5... and change it to PPTP.

Step 4In the options menu of the new connection select the Type field ...

Step 6Enter Relakks as a Description. The Server to connect to is pptp.relakks.com. Please enter your username in the Account field. Leave the Encryption Level set to Auto. Make sure to have Send All Traffic turned on. Turn off Proxy settings. To end the configration click Done.

Although the Encryption Level can be set to Maximum, some iOS versions seem to work improperly with that setting.

Step 7iOS will display a warning about PPTP being insecure. As you read the intro of this guide you already know about that but chose to use PPTP instead of OpenVPN. Click Save

If you choose to not turn off the proxy settings here, but instead switch to Manual, you can confi gure our Proxy. This lets Safari make use of an anonymizing proxy via the VPN. This proxy can only be reached when connected to the VPN.

Step 8Back in the System Settings VPN section toggle the Status switch to initiate a connection.

Step 9The connection gets established and a VPN icon appears in the top status bar. For debugging purposes it might also be useful to look up the VPN assigned IP address here. Leave the Status display by selecting the VPN navigation bar button.

Step 10To manually turn the VPN on or off, open the Settings application from your Home Screen. The default VPN confi guration is available here as a shortcut. Without any traffi c going through the tunnel the VPN connection will be turned off after a while and needs to be restarted manually again. For PPTP on the iPhone, reconnecting does not work automatically and cannot be confi gured to activate when accessing certain network locations.
