INTRODUCTIONLathe machine is the most basic , as well as most versatile machine tool. It is the

backbone of any workshop or tool room. It uses in various cutting tools for different

operations.

TYPES OF LATHE1.SPEED LATHE:-Speed lathe are

simple lathes on which the tools are held against the work.

2.ENGINE LATHE:-Engine lathe is capable

of performing a wide variety of operations.

3.BENCH LATHE:-Bench lathe are used to perform a small precision work.

4. TOOL ROOM LATHE:-Tool room lathe are built with greater precision and

has a large range of speeds and feeds.

5.CAPSTAN LATHE-In these types of lathe the tail of centre lathe is replaced by a

hexagonal turret.

GLOSSARY OF LATHE TERMS

APRON:-Front part of the carriage assembly on which the carriage hand wheel is mounted.

BED:-Main supporting casting running the length of the lathe.

CARRIAGE:-Assembly that moves the tool post and cutting tool along the ways.CARRIAGE HANDWHEEL:-A wheel with a handle used to move the carriage by hand bymeans of a rack and pinion drive.CHUCK:-A clamping device for holding work in the lathe or for holding drills in the tailstock.

COMPOUND:-Movable platform on which the toolpost is mounted; can be set at an angle to the workpiece.HEADSTOCK:-The main casting mounted on the left end of the bed, in whichthe spindle is mounted.

LEADSCREW:-Precision screw that runs the length of the bed.SPINDLE:-Main rotating shaft on which the chuck or other work holdingdevice is mounted.TAILSTOCK:-Cast iron assembly that can slide along the ways and be lockedin place.TAILSTOCK HANDWHEEL:-A wheel with a handle used to move the tailstock ram in and out of the tailstock casting.TOOLHOLDER:- A holding device mounted on the compound into which the cutting tool is clamped.WAYS:-Precision ground surfaces along the top of the bed on which the saddle rides.
