AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Ths study is planned to with the following aims and objectives:
To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of oil pulling, herbal mouth rinses and fluoride mouthwash on the caries activity and the counts of S. mutans in the saliva of children, using Oratest and Dentocult SM kit.
To compare the antimicrobial efficacy of oil pulling, herbal mouth rinses and fluoride mouthwash on the caries activity and the counts of S. mutans in the saliva of children using the Oratest and Dentocult SM strip mutans kit.

The study sample will be divided into three balanced groups. Group I(study group: oil pulling), group II(study group: herbal mouth rinses) and group III(study group : fluoride mouthwash) and group IV(control group: distilled water). The children will be using the mouthrinses as per manufacturer’s instruction

For caries activity test: The children will be asked to rinse their mouth
vigorously for 30 seconds with 10 ml of sterilized milk. The expectorate will be collected in a sterile beaker and 3 ml of expectorate is transferred with a disposable syringe to a screw cap test tube containing 0.1% methylene blue. The expectorate milk and methylene blue has to be thoroughly mixed and a mirror to be used to detect any color change(blue to white) at the bottom of the tube every 5 minutes. The time taken for the initiation of color change is recorded.

For streptococcus mutans count: For assessing the streptococcus mutans count
in the saliva, a paraffin tablet will be given to each subject to chew for 1 minute. Excess saliva is swallowed. The rough surface of Dentocult SM saliva strip is pressed against the saliva on the tongue and the strip has to be removed through gently closed lips. The strips are to be placed in the selective culture broth with the smooth surface clipped and attached to the cap. The vials has to be incubated in an upright position at 37 C for 48 hrs with the cap opened one quarter to allow growth of micro organisms. The growth on the strips will be assessed according to the manufacturer’s chart
