    BACKGROUND

    Many anxieties faced byparents and children

    performed surgery, andin HONG KONG thisapproach is mostlyfocused on providing

    procedural information;the psychological needs

    of children and theirparents have seldombeen taken into

    appropriateness of usingtherapeutic play in

    preparing children forsurgery.

    METHODS

    Design ParticipantsBy using a simple complete

    randomization method,participants were

    randomly assigned to theexperimental group,receiving therapeutic play

    intervention, and thecontrol group, receiving

    routine informationpreparation. The study wascarried out in a well-

    established day surgeryunit

    criteria were as follows:children should be

    between 7 and 12 years ofage, able to speak well,and accompanied by theirparents (either mother orfather) on the preoper-ative assessment day andon the day of surgery

    Interventions

    In the control group,children and theirparents received routineinformation interventionon the preoperativeassessment day.In the experimentalgroup, children and theirparents were invited toreceive therapeutic playintervention at around 1week before each childsoperation

    The state anxiety level ofthe children wasmeasured by using the

    CSAS-C.The state anxiety level ofthe parents wasmeasured by using theChinese version of theState Anxiety Scale forAdults.

    DATA

    COLLECTION

    The PPSQ is a scalemeasuring the parentsperceptions and opinionsof the interventionsreceived preoperatively,which covered theappro- priateness,adequacy, relevancy,understanding, and useof preoperativeinformation and skills tohelp their children copewith the stress of surgery

    The data collectionlasted for 13 months. Atotal of 203 childrenalong with their parentswere recruited. Theresponse and attritionrates were 88% and 18%,respectively. Of the 203children and parents, 106were randomly assignedto the control group and97 were assigned to theexperimental group.

    CONCLUSION

    Children who received therapeutic playintervention reported lower state anxietyscores in the pre- and postoperative periodsthan children who received informationintervention. The information from this study will promoteawareness in nurses and parents that play is avery important part of childrens lives andthey need play even when they are ill.
