    I. What do you know about English Language?

History of the English Language:The history of the English language really started with the arrival of three Germanic tribes

who invaded Britain during the 5th century AD. These tribes, the Angles, the Saxons andthe Jutes, crossed the North Sea from what today is Denmark and northern Germany. Atthat time the inhabitants of Britain spoke a Celtic language. But most of the Celticspeakers were pushed west and north by the invaders - mainly into what is now Wales,Scotland and Ireland. The Angles came from Englaland and their language was calledEnglisc - from which the words England and English are derived.

English is a West Germanic language that originated from the Anglo-Frisiandialects brought

to Britain by Germanic invaders from various parts of what is now northwest Germanyand the Netherlands.

Popularity of the English Language:English language is used in about 100 countries all around the world. An approximate 380

million people use English as their mother-tongue and a similar number of people use itas their second language. English is the most widely used language in the world andtherefore ceased to be the cultural banner of native English speakers. English, as timesgoes on is absorbing the aspects of other worldwide cultures. Because English is sowidely spoken, it has been referred to as a "global language." While English is not theofficial language in many countries, it is the language most often taught as a secondlanguage around the world. It is also, by international treaty, the official language foraircraft/airport communication. Its widespread acceptance as a first or second languageis the main indication of its global status.

Why is English popular and important? Why not Chinese, Spanish? -the Englishinfluence will keep No. 1 until 2050 because English speakers' economic power is big."

II. Importance and Effects of English Language Set though no one denies the importance and popularity of E for VN in the integration of

economy, politic and culture , education. Especially, as the globalization is occurring.Having a good E will help us making a superiority over other countries in the region ,farther in the world.

When Viet Nam has been a member of WTO (Word Trade Organization), we should useEnglish smoothly, so that we can be able to get modern knowledge to develop oureconomic. Also, it is the shortest way for Vietnamese people to find a way developingVietnamese economic with others! Remember that the integration is not only imply

about culture and education , but also cover politic and economy. With each person, having a good E can help you make a lot of choice, such as domestic

or foreign education, higher salary , flexible environment, traveling, advancedknowledgeso on.

+ Most of the businesses engaged in dealing with international clients and suppliersprefer using English as the primary source of communication. While people have theirown native languages, English serves as the most common and user-friendly languageto interpret, translate and communicate with English-speaking customers andprofessionals. Hence, to make the best out of the available opportunities, one has to behighly fluent in English.

+People not only travel to places worldwide for business and pleasure, but they leavetheir homeland and travel to another country for study purpose as well. Travel to anycountry on this earth and you would find English as the main medium of teaching, as itis practically impossible for a new person to study in the local language of the country,in particular. Hence, education has, by far, increased the importance of English to agreat extent.

III. Some protests against making Englishbecome the second official language

If Vietnam decided to make this bold ambition, would you think that VN becomea new Singapore of Asian? And whether successful or not? The cost will be? Lossof cultural and national identity, even loss of national sovereignty? Somestudents often use English words in their Vietnamese sentences when they talkto each others.

Brain drain will be lack of the most excellent people. They thought that ifVietnamese students are good at English, they will try to leave Vietnam and

contribute to the development of others country. They scare that one day, all oftalented students will no longer want to make Vietnam become a developedcountry.

Method :English as a second language is not the serious and negative impactwith culture and politic if the government needs to do well about cultural, ideological and humane policy. We have to see the problems on two sides. Theyonly see some negative effects and they cant see the positive effects. Thosestudents will be come back Vietnam and help young students become holisticpeople. And of course, Vietnam will be a developed country.

IV. How will English become the second language ofVietnam?

Nowadays, English is being taught in many schools of Vietnam. Vietnamese students are learningEnglish as the second language. To pass the entrance examination of many universities in Vietnam, candidates need to have a good English. Beside Math, Physics and other scientific subjects, Englishis also an indispensable subject.

But there are many things that need to change in the way Vietnamese students learn English andVietnamese teachers teach English. For example, the teachers told students to learn vocabularies bylearning by heart their Vietnamese meanings. And students follow the way that teachers told us todo. When read the text, the teachers always tells her/his students to translate the passage intoVietnamese. I think that we only need to understand the text because when we translate the text, itwill be very bad. After that students will be dependable on translating, without translating they cantunderstand. Many problems appears in teaching English of Vietnam. If we have some solutions forthose problem, we should apply them to the English classes. After that we should spread them and

our status will be improved.o Some method:

    1. In order to improve the teaching and learning quality, several institutions have begun tocontents, teaching methods and school/program evaluation and teacher/learner look out and learnfrom other countries what they have been doing concerning the assessment. They have set uptwinning programs, joint venture partnerships and different academic activities.

    2. . There has been a strong tendency, not only from institutions but also from professionals, toapply new technologies, methodologies and techniques in language teaching. This have beenencouraged and finally supported by the government.

3.Effort has been made toward the founding of a national association for English teaching in the

future 4. Helping everyone recognizes English as a very important tool in national development,

    cooperation and globalization

5.Making opportunities have been given to ensure learners individual learning and practice andlifelong learning
