9:00 a.m.Join us on Saturday, 19 April, as we visit the History Colorado Center in Denver. The History Colorado Center is located in Denver’s Golden Triangle Museum Dis-trict at 1200 Broadway. The museum is high tech and hands-on and was named the #1 Must See Museum in True West magazine. It states, “the museum’s interactive and informative exhibits richly illustrate Colo-rado’s dynamic history. Each exhibit is engaging for all ages!”

The exhibits, viewed on two levels, blend technol-ogy, media environments and artifacts. Visit the town of Keota, enroll in the town high school, ride a Model T, gossip in a homestead, climb a hayloft, and swap eggs at the general store. It’s all hands-on fun!

Descend into a silver mine, take a virtual ski jump off famed Howelsen Hill, trade with Kit Carson at Bent’s Fort, learn about the resilience of Colorado’s American In-dian tribes, and discover life in Amache, a relocation center for Japanese Americans during WWII. The History Colorado Cen-ter’s hands-on and high-tech exhibits take you back in time, connecting what WAS to what’s NEXT.

Plan to join us for breakfast at The Egg & I (east side of Academy across from the Citadel Mall) at 9:00 a.m., after which we will leave for Denver about 10:30 a.m. It is important that we have your reservation for the museum not later than April 16.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

Spring has officially ar-rived; I know this because the Formula One (F1) race season has begun. This is great because Nico Rosberg, driv-ing for Mer-cedes-Benz, dominated the first race in

Melbourne, Australia, winning by a 24.5 second margin. In fact, Mercedes-Benz powered cars finished 1-2-3 with team McClaren Mercedes-Benz claiming sec-ond and third places.

This should be a much better season for team Mercedes-Benz since they have seemingly figured out the new 2014 “engine” formula better than Re-nault or Ferrari-powered cars. “Engine” is in quotes because the pre-ferred term this year is “power-unit.”

This year’s new formula is a 1.6 liter turbo-charged V-6 gasoline-powered engine combined with a sophisticated Energy Recovery System (ERS) to make the aforementioned hybrid power unit. Fuel is now limited to 140 liters per race (approx. 37 gallons); so without the gaso-line/electric hybrid power units, the cars would run out of fuel long before the end of the race.

For me, F1 is in the process of ruining the race experience, simply because the cars now sound terrible! Whereas in the past V-8s and V-10s had that breathtaking high-pitched roar, these new hybrid-pow-ered units sound like muffled leaf blow-ers. The new formula has also mandated decreased downforce so the shape of the cars has become more bizarre. Look at all the different aero-appendages the engineers have designed, trying to get as much downforce back as possible while staying within the new rules. The cars are also slower this year than last.

To sum up, the cars look and sound ter-rible and are slower. To me that doesn’t sound like progress from the top racing body in the world. The good news is that the Mercedes AMG F1 team should have

a great season. After the first race, it looks to be an early favorite for the Drivers and Constructors Championships.

With Mercedes-Benz power units also installed in McLaren, Wil-

liams, and Force India race cars, Mer-cedes-Benz-powered race cars will likely dominate the entire 2014 F1 season. As Gottleib Daimler said so long ago, “Das Beste oder Nichts” (the Best or Nothing).

As always, drive safe, and I will see you down the road.

VMCCA Fun Run

Sunday, 27 April 201410:00 a.m.

Spring is officially here and it’s time to tune up your beautiful Benz for all those summer driving excursions. Come out for our DIY Tech Session on Sunday, 27 April.

You can de-winterize your cars - take off those clunky snow tires, install a new bat-tery, replace worn-out windshield wipers, adjust your coolant levels, and check your belts and hoses. Put your car on the lift to inspect the undercarriage for dirt and moisture damage. This is also a good time for a little chip and scratch repair. These are all quick and easy projects you can do yourself at a huge savings.

All you pay for is the parts (at our 20% discount) and a $10 fee to use the service bay. Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs will provide service techs to help you over the rough spots. Think of the bragging rights you’ll have when you fix your Benz yourself!

Show time is 10:00 a.m. at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs, 730 Automotive Drive, on Sunday, 27 April. Call Dave Williamson at 719- 575-7976 to reserve your service bay and lift.

D-I-Y Tech Session

Saturday, 17 May 20149:00 a.m.

Calling all cars! It’s time once again for the Veteran Motor Car Club of America (VMCCA) Car Show at Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City. We are planning our annual fun run after breakfast to go and see all the classic and muscle cars. The ques-tion of the day is, do we want to show our “Star” cars on the field?

If we are going to show our cars, we must pre-register so we can be parked together on the grass. Pre-registration is $20 per car and includes admission for the driver and a passenger. Deadline to pre-register is 5 May 2014. If you would like to show your car, contact Judy Bennett at 719-

576-9737 or [email protected], to let her know what car you’d like to show.

Those who want to spectate will meet as usual at The Egg & I Restaurant for our monthly breakfast and then caravan down to Canon City for the show.

We will park in the lot to the west of the Abbey and show grounds. After a suitable interval to gawk at all the beautiful cars, we will stop by Fred Daams’ house to check on the progress of his Spitfire fight-er - you remember, the one he’s building in his garage? Then we’ll drive off to lunch in Guffey at the Bull Moose Tavern. It’s a beautiful drive. Hope to see you there.

A woman who rolled her car down the side of U.S. 24 on 5 Mar 2014 has her Mer-cedes’ emergency call system, mbrace, to thank for helping to save her life.

Police said the 2010 ML350 was east-bound on U.S. 24 through Manitou Springs when the car left the road, accelerated, became airborne for about 90 feet and then crashed and rolled for more than 100 feet down the embankment near Williams Canyon, coming to rest in a ravine about

250 feet from the road. No one saw the crash.

When the air bags deployed, the ML sent an emergency mes-sage with her GPS coordinates to Colorado State Patrol, Manitou Springs Police and El Paso Coun-ty sheriff’s deputies who responded.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

Come with us as we rediscover our Gold Rush past during our South Park Week-end on Saturday and Sunday, 21-22 June. Fairplay, located in South Park, contains South Park City, a remarkable restoration of early Gold Rush towns, preserving the history of our nation’s frontier while edu-cating and entertaining today’s visitors.

The museum is an accurate representation of a mining town between 1860 and 1900. Thirty-four authentic buildings filled with over 60,000 artifacts portray most of the economic and social aspects of boomtown life. The restored buildings contain period room settings and exhibits illustrating the professions, trades and industries that contributed to life in a nineteenth century Colorado mining town.

After our museum tour, we’ll move on to the annual South Park Kick-Ass BBQ Festival. This is the sec-ond day of a 2-day competition of 35 of the country’s top BBQ masters vying for $10K in prize money and bragging rights. You can sample pork BBQ from five of the competing teams for $15 for lunch. Then it’s off to wander among the vendors and pick up some souvenirs at this unique “Highest BBQ Competition” in the

world!

For those not returning home Saturday afternoon and choosing to stay the night for the next day’s events, we’ve reserved rooms for our group at two local hotels. In the evening, we will meet for cocktails and dinner and a special presentation from the president of the Denver, South Park and Pacific Historical Society.

For lodging, we have reserved rooms at the hotels listed below. The number of reserved rooms is limited, so we recom-mend you make your reservation soon if you plan to attend this outing.

Hand Hotel (www.handhotel.com) - $79 per night for 2 people. Phone number 719-836-3595. When calling, refer to the Mercedes Event or Karen Absher. Price in-cludes an enhanced continental breakfast.

Fairplay-Valition Hotel (www.stayfair-play.com) - $99 per night for 2 people. Phone number 719-836-4699. When call-ing, refer to the Mercedes Event or Karen Absher. Breakfast is available at 20% dis-count off menu prices, or you can partake in the breakfast at the Hand Hotel at a flat rate of $6.00 per person.

Following breakfast on Sunday, we’ll drive to Como for a special tour of the stone-built railroad round house, dating from the 1870s. This structure is being restored and is not normally open for public tours. After our tour, we’ll head for Breckenridge via Boreas Pass, a well-maintained gravel road. If you don’t want to do dirt, it’s an easy drive back to Fairplay and over Hoo-sier Pass into Breckenridge for lunch.

If you choose to drive up to Fairplay on Sunday, you can meet us and join in our Sunday adventure. Where and when to meet will be in the May newsletter. For more information, contact Stan and Mary Bixler at [email protected], 719-597-1281, or Clark Absher at [email protected], 719-749-2621. Sign up today!

Star Party - 28 June 2014As you may have read, the Pikes Peak Section is planning our first annual Star Party to be held on Saturday, 28 June at Absher Acres in Peyton. The location will offer a good view of the northern, eastern and southern skies. We will be able to see Saturn and Mars along with hundreds of deep space objects, if we have clear skies.

Prior to the evening viewing we will set up a few computers displaying sky maps and explain what you’ll be seeing in the tele-scope. If you want to get a head start, go to http://www.stellarium.org/ and download a copy of the latest version of Stellarium, a free planetarium program.

We will have up to 5 or more telescopes set up in a dark field to view the night sky objects. Just a few of the objects we will be able to see on the night of the 28th of June (weather permitting) will be located in the east and south portion of the night sky.

After the sun sets and the skies become dark, around 9:00 p.m., we’ll be ready for viewing. You will be encouraged to go from telescope to telescope, to view a different object in each scope. There are thousands of items in the night sky and we will try and pick out some of the most interesting. If you watch closely you may be able to see satellites transit the night sky.

This will be an opportunity to get together with friends for an entertaining and edu-cational evening in the great outdoors. In addition to star viewing, we will be running a sci-fi or astronomy-related movie (think

Gravity, Spaceballs, Star Man, Contact or 2001, a Space Odyssey - it’ll be a sur-prise!).

The club will be supplying water and some soft drinks, so there will be a $5 charge per car. Come out, bring your lawn chairs, mosquito repellent, a light jacket and what-ever you want to eat. It should be a great evening in the great outdoors.

If you have a set of binocu-lars bring them along; you’ll be surprised how much you can see with them. If you’ve never looked at a deep space object through a telescope, you are in for a memorable experience.

To aid in planning the event please RSVP to Ken Sheehan at 719-433-9025 or [email protected] or contact Judy Bennett at [email protected] to tell us how many plan to attend. Watch the news letter for updates. In June we will have a map with directions to the location.

New DeliveriesIt has been a banner year for Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs and the Pikes

Peak Section. We had the Bixler’s delivery last month and on 14 March we celebrated the addition of 5 new-to-you vehicles for our members.

Gary and Diane Ga-gnon took delivery of a sand beige 2008 ML 350, Jared and Dana

Dierks (new members) bought a white 2008 ML 350, Karen and Clark Absher bought a black 2011 ML 350, Dave and Ligia Carpenter got a white 2012 ML 350, and Mark and Jacqui Eldred celebrated with a palladium silver 2013 E-550 cab-riolet. There is going to be a lot of really

good-looking metal gracing our events this summer.

After our standard champagne toast to the new arrivals, accompanied by Andrea’s world-famous meatballs and other munch-ies, we swapped stories and ooh’ed and aah’ed about the fabulous features on the cabriolet. Then we adjourned outside to take pictures of the hardier MLs.

New Member Breakfast RecapThere was lots of good conversation and good food at our New Member Breakfast held Saturday, March 15th. The dining area was filled with long-standing members and the new members we welcomed in 2013.

Richard Warner joined our group after re-locating from Florida. Hitesh Patel brought his wife Sandy and two sons along. Dave and Ligia Carpenter, although long-stand-ing members, brought their grandson who just happened to know the Patel teens.

It seems the young people that joined us may well be Mercedes-Benz Club mem-bers one day!

As we were unsure of the weather, a drive proposed for after the breakfast was can-celled. However, our many events for the coming months were shared, so starting next month we will have lots of opportuni-ties to get out in our cars. We hope to see many more of our newest members in the coming months.

We had such a good time at our picnic last year that we’ve decided to do it again. Clark and Karen Absher have offered to once again host the 2014 Joint Section Picnic. It will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Absher Acres.

Everything will kick off at 12:00 noon with a catered lunch followed by a short, fun rally and then dessert and the trophy presenta-tions at a mystery location. All you need to bring is a Mercedes, and $10.00 per per-son to cover the cost of the catered lunch. Lunch begins promptly at noon so plan to arrive no later than 11:45 AM. Arrive with at least a ½ tank of gas.

Absher Acres (17410 Prospector Drive, Peyton, CO 80831) is located on the north facing slope of the Palmer Ridge, four miles north of Peyton. All driving will be on paved roads except for the last 1/2 mile upon your arrival at and departure from Absher Acres, .

In addition to those choosing to participate in the rally (maximum of 16 teams), we will need a minimum of four teams to manage the speed gun and check points during

the rally. The rally winners (first, second and third) will be determined by accumu-lating the fewest penalty points with pen-alty points assigned for traffic violations, failures to fully complete challenges at the various check points, and missing the pre-established time to complete the rally. The rally will be between 50 and 70 miles in length and the closest gas station is 14 miles.

In order to properly plan for the quantity of food, please RSVP to Clark or Karen by July 7, 2014 at 719 749-2621 (home phone), 719 332-5334 (Clark’s cell phone) or [email protected]. When you RSVP, please indicate if you would like to be a rally participant or a rally worker.

We look forward to your attending, and we guarantee you will have an enjoyable afternoon. Last year we had 48 members and guests, so this year let’s shoot for a minimum of 60. Before the day is done, you will see some things you have never seen before, and others that will take a good long term memory to recall when and where you last saw them.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

The Pikes Peak Section is launching a new initiative, just in time for the summer driving season and it’s open to all members of the Pikes Peak Section as well as all Sections in the Rocky Mountain Region. We call it Paved Peaks and Passes (P3).

This is a self-guided driving program (NOT a competition!) designed to let all of our members, not just our off-roaders, experi-ence the grandeur of Colorado by driving the paved passes in our Rocky Mountains. This event includes driving to the summits of the only two paved Colorado 14-ers, Mt. Evans and Pikes Peak. Of course, there are more than 100 passes in the Rocky Mountains, but we have selected 36 that are within a one-day drive of Colorado Springs.

So how does it work? We plan to use a passport system. We have created a pass-port that includes a color photograph and pertinent details of each pass. We will also provide a map of Colorado highlighted with all the passes in the passport and a P3 program rules handout.

Program participants have two years to complete your passports by driving 30 of the 36 passes and taking a photograph of your car(s) at/near the summit of each pass. Email the photo to the P3 Administra-tor or print it out and bring it to a Section event, such as breakfast. The P3 Admin-istrator will validate the photograph and stamp the appropriate page of the pass-port.

Participants can drive the passes on their

own, with friends, or as part of organized Section events. We have several recom-mended drives that cover two or more passes in a single trip. The P3 Adminis-trator will email the suggested drives to all participants. In addition, the Section is committed to planning at least two Sec-tion events a year that traverse at least some of those passes on the list. This year, the Pikes Peak Section will be visiting Mt. Evans and Pikes Peak and will traverse the associated passes along the way. We are reinstating monthly Sunday Drives and will send out email notices when we are going on a drive to invite participants to join us.

After you earn your first passport stamp, you will receive a P3 windbreaker jacket, embroidered with the MBCA and the P3

logos. There is also a soft shell jacket available for a small surcharge. Addition-al jackets, are also available.

Upon achieving 30 passport stamps, participants will re-ceive a dash plaque and a commemora-tive certificate. You will also be recog-

nized at our Annual Potluck Dinner. We will track participant progress through the year and provide monthly updates via the newsletter.

The cost to participate in this program is a one-time fee of $75 for each passport. The cost includes the embroidered jacket, a map, handout, dash plaque and completion certificate. The only stipulations are that the car driven must be your Mercedes and that you complete the passport within 2 years.

That’s the program in a nutshell. We plan to launch it on 5 April 2014, when pass-ports will be available for pickup. If you have any questions or suggestions to improve the program, please contact Judy Bennett at [email protected] or 719-576-9737.
