Playing the game of the fatherPlaying the game of the fatherLegendary deeds of Fremantle derbies have been passed from father to son in the port region for more than 100 years.

In some cases so have some very talented football genes.

As East Fremantle prepares to host its arch-rival in the biggest home-and-away match of the WAFL season, the spotlight has fallen on a band of players carrying on a family tradition.

Three Sharks and at least one South Fremantle opponent will endure the tough derby conditions just like their dad did decades earlier.

East Fremantle’s Andrew Stephen has followed father Peter by playing interstate football. Peter Stephen also won the club’s fairest and best award in 1969.

Another Shark, Ryan Lester-Smith, resembles his dad Neil in face and body movement on the ground. Lester-Smith the younger has enjoyed his first full season in the competition. Neil Lester-Smith and his brother Rod are two of the Sharks’ favourite sons.

WAFL great Brian Peake wore the East Fremantle guernsey more times than anyone else (305). His offspring Brett is keeping the tradition going at the club. Brett Peake’s grandfather, Laurie Peake, also played for the Sharks.

Then, in the red and white colours, Toby Bairstow has joined his father, 1986 Sandover medallist Mark Bairstow, in establishing a league career with South Fremantle. Jason Maskos, the son of former Bulldog Arthur Maskos, has been pushing for a league recall in recent weeks.

It is that kind of tradition that has driven the battles between the Fremantle teams and turned the old Foundation Day weekend clashes into classic contests.

Although the holiday period is now known as WA Day, it can’t diminish the significance of the occasion, which is the first fixture locked into the schedule each pre-season.

Indeed East Fremantle has billed this clash as “The Original Foundation Derby” to recognise that both clubs are considered by the WAFL as foundation clubs of the league.

There is one change to the norm this season. The match won’t be played on the Monday, instead being staged on a Sunday for a very good reason according to Sharks chief executive Adam Kelly.

“We really wanted to avoid the Eagles game on the Monday,” Kelly said.

“Both clubs looked back at the previous occasion when one of the AFL teams played on the Monday holiday – it was the Dockers in 1997 from memory – and there was a 30 to

40 per cent drop in the crowd when the derby was played up against it.

“So we decided it was too big a risk to go up against the Eagles. Fremantle play on the Saturday, the Eagles on the Monday and the derby slots nicely in the middle.”

Interestingly, there has been a positive by-product to the change in timeslot.

“We have been getting a lot of feedback from people saying they like the Sunday game because they can come back to the club for a drink without having to worry about going to work the next day,” Kelly said.

The Sharks are also committed to hosting the Foundation Derby every second year rather than permanently playing the clashes at Fremantle Oval.

Crowd figures for recent East Fremantle-South Fremantle matches at Shark Park have been as good, if not better, than those recorded for Bulldogs’ home matches.

This year’s derby will also honour the Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation, which aims to raise awareness of organ donation.

Players from both teams will wear special rainbow bootlaces to recognise the foundation.

Of the past 10 meetings between the teams at East Fremantle Oval the record is locked a 5-5.

Player of the Year

Claremont’s Andrew Foster has become the form player of the WAFL competition and has launched his challenge for one of the league’s most coveted awards.

Foster has been judged best-on-ground in each of his past three matches but his nine-vote tally isn’t enough to take the lead in the Osborne Park Volkswagen WAFL Player of the Year award.

Two votes for teammate Jake Murphy was enough to keep the Tiger atop the leaderboard.

Kyle Hams became the 11th Swan Districts player to earn votes with his haul from the clash with Subiaco.

The winner of the Osborne Park Volkswagen WAFL Player of the Year wins a $1500 prize.

FAST & FURIOUS (UNIVERSAL PICTURES)Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of all-stars as the global blockbuster franchise built on speed races to its next continent in Fast & Furious 6.

Reuniting for their most high-stakes adventure yet, fan favorites Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Elsa Pataky are joined by badass series newcomers Luke Evans and Gina Carano.

Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian’s (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incomplete.

Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Rodriguez).

The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London. Payment? Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again.

Building on the worldwide blockbuster success of Fast Five and taking the action, stunts and narrative to even greater heights, Fast & Furious 6 sees director Justin Lin back behind the camera for the fourth time.

He is supported by longtime producers Neal H. Moritz and Vin Diesel, who welcome producer Clayton Townsend back to the series.

Opens on June 6.

10 COLLECTABLESby Sean Cowan

During 2013, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

Poster boys of another era

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, GPO Box N1025, Perth WA, 6843. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

Can anyone tell us anything about the others?

Following last week’s bumper list of recent sales, there were a few more to add this week.

The first makes it very difficult to get a feel for how much WAFL club annual reports are worth.

You might remember me reporting last week that an East Fremantle collector had picked up a 1957 annual report for about $54.

Well, the same collector won a 1970 East Fremantle annual report for 99 cents at auction a few days later.

I’ve always said the WAFL collectables market was volatile.

At the other end of the spectrum, a reasonable-condition 1955 WAFL grand final Budget sold for the whopping price of $206.50

at auction, which is the most I’ve seen paid for any Football Budget.

And I’ve been made aware of a sale on the private market of a rare Swan Districts bobblehead, which had a cracked head. It sold for $300.

As I mentioned when a couple of bobbleheads sold last month, the value of these is very difficult to estimate.

Despite auction prices of just over $1000 for a Claremont bobblehead in exceptional condition and just $68 for a Melbourne bobblehead with some damage, I put them around the $400-mark, if in good nick.

And I note the doyen of Victorian valuers Rick Milne recently put the same price tag on them.

Finally for this week, I have some more requests and some thanks to give.

First, I’d like to thank Subiaco supporter Neil, who answered my request in last week’s Budget for photographs or information about club membership badges.

Neil sent in a photograph of his Subi badges, some of which had come from his father. He said his mother had donated many badges to the club in the 1980s.

The photograph helped me determine in which years the club had issued badges and in which years they had issued plastic cards.

I’m trying to refine this list for all clubs, so if anyone else can help with information or some photographs of any club’s badges, I’d certainly appreciate you getting in touch. I’m particularly short on information about badges for Claremont, East Perth, Swans and West Perth.

While Neil was able to help with a photo of some badges, I didn’t have any luck with my other request for Peel Thunder annual reports. If anyone can help, please get in touch.

There haven’t been too many sets of WAFL posters produced over the years.

And, as with all WAFL collectables, I’m still trying to put together a decent list of those which have been manufactured.

Included on that list so far is the set of 1983 Daily News club posters, the 1981 Westside Football club posters, some Nabisco WAFL stars posters from about 1970 and, of course, the Sunday Times grand final teams posters, which started as early as the 1960s.

But Rod recently showed me four posters from a set which he believes was produced in 1972. I had never seen them before.

These single colour posters were produced by a company called Page Photographics. So, has anyone seen the other four?

And has anyone got any other interesting WAFL posters lying around?

I’ve written about the famed Walsh’s Menswear cards in this column on quite a few occasions over the past two years.

But I still haven’t got much in the way of details about them.

There were actually just plain head-and-shoulder photographs, which had the player’s name and club on the bottom and a “Walsh’s Menswear” stamp on the back.

They were issued at the Walsh’s shops to customers, though it’s not clear whether you had to make a purchase or whether they were just given away to anyone who asked.

We know of 29 Subiaco cards in existence. So, if there were, say, 30 for each club, that would mean there were 240 cards in the set.

So far, we only know of 48 – the 29 from Subiaco, 11 from East Perth, six from East Fremantle, one from South Fremantle and one from West Perth.

The lone West Perth card came to light a few weeks ago at the funeral of former Cardinals forward Lindsay Holland, who featured on the card.

Falcon rewarded for servicePlaying in the WAFL hasn’t been easy for Matt Guadagnin.

The initial trek from Southern Cross to start his career with West Perth was big enough. But the popular Falcons midfielder still has to commute to play in the State league.

Guadagnin is based on a farm near York and travels the distance for training and matches each week.

The 29-year-old will this round notch his 150th WAFL match and earn a much-deserved life membership to West Perth.

The milestone is a credit to Guadagnin, who also bounced back from a knee reconstruction in 2008.

There has been little fanfare over the milestone. That is just the way Darren Glass would have it.

Glass has played his footy that way for 15 years. No fuss, no grandstanding. Just go out and get the job done.

It has been like that for 299 senior matches. In this round, when he runs out for West Coast in the clash with Richmond, he will join the rare group in the WA 300 club.

Glass breaks through to join rare group There are 34 other West Australians, or 36 if you include adopted sons Haydn Bunton Jnr and Maurice Rioli, who have reached the mark by playing league matches in the major Australian competitions.

Glass made his WAFL debut with Perth in 1998. Surprisingly, he has played 48 matches for the Demons but hasn’t donned the red and black guernsey since 2004.

Only two weeks ago Glass celebrated his 250th AFL match with the Eagles.

GAME PREVIEWS

PERTH V SWAN DISTRICTS

Brownes Stadium

Perth will want to avoid getting too far out of touch with the top two against a Swan Districts side that has beaten two of the top four teams this year.

The Demons suffered just their third loss of the season last week, though Swans were two points off derailing Perth’s blazing start to the year when the teams clashed in round four.

Shutting down Brennan Stack, Paul Bevan and Michael Florio will be vital for the black and whites if they are to keep Perth quiet on the scoreboard.

The Demons will need to lock down their own defence especially in the second half, after allowing 10 goals in the last two terms last week and nine against Swans in that round four battle.

Dayle Garlett and Tim Geappen will need to shoulder some of the Swans’ scoring burden though Shaun Hildebrandt, Kirk Ugle and Tony Notte offer plenty of forward line support.

Luke Miles is in line to play his 50th WAFL game as a Swan.

EAST FREM V SOUTH FREM

East Fremantle Oval

The ladder means little when it comes to a Foundation Derby at the port.

East Fremantle rediscovered the derby tension in round seven when South Fremantle defied its lowly position to challenge the Sharks in the first battle of the arch-rivals in 2013.

The Bulldogs have since notched their first win of the year and will go into the traditional fixture with considerably more confidence.

Giving away possession has been costly for the Bulldogs this year, with three players in the top 10 for conceding frees and they will need to avoid letting the Sharks convert those opportunities.

For the Bulldogs to get on the board early they will need Paul Mugambwa, John Sgherza and Mitch Banner to keep the forward line fast paced and impactful.

East Fremantle had the benefit of the bye in the previous round but the Sharks did have the heavy workload of a mid-week Foxtel Cup win over Norwood before the break.

Brett Peake was unavailable for the interstate club match and will be keen to shine before the big crowd in the derby.

Stopping Rory O’Brien, Mark McGough and Richard Hadley will be critical to South Fremantle’s hopes of victory.

S h a n n o n Burnett could play his 50th WAFL game this week for the Bulldogs, while Bradd Dalziell could play his 50th as a Shark.

EAST PERTH V WEST PERTH

Medibank Stadium

The Perth derby will have major top-four implications for both East Perth and West Perth, albeit at different ends of finals tree.

While the Royals lost last week they are only out of the top four on percentage, with favourable results this weekend likely to open the door to fourth place.

The Falcons dominated the second half of their first game this year against the Royals in round one, with an 11-goal-to-one advantage despite lower accuracy.

Josh Mellington and Anthony Tsalikis will give the Falcons a scoring boost the Royals will need to limit without sacrificing any of their own attacking pressure.

Josh Smith, the league’s leading goalkicker, and the other Royals key forwards will need their midfield teammates to find ways to take advantage of Paul Johnson’s dominance in the ruck and use their clearances to get the ball quickly across the ground.

The Falcons can rely on their defensive play to limit the Royals up forward, with Andrew Strijk, Luke Tedesco and Dan Hunt anchoring a consistent back line.

Matt Guadagnin could line up for his 150th game as a Falcon

while Aaron Black could play his 50th senior game.

CLAREMONT V SUBIACO

Claremont Oval

The record books will come off the shelves if Claremont triumph at home.

Marc Webb’s men have nine straight wins in 2013 and another will prompt a look at where the starts sits in club history.

According to the custodians of the WAFL statistics, Greg Wardell-Johnson and Steve Davies, the Tigers’ best start to a WAFL season was 11 consecutive wins in 1994. Gerard Neesham handed over the club’s reins halfway through that season.

Subiaco will have to improve dramatically from the team’s previous encounter to stop the Claremont charge.

Their total of 33 points in the match up with the Tigers earlier this year was the Lions’ lowest against Claremont. And it was despite having more team disposals.

Defending Anton Hamp, Paul Medhurst and Ian Richardson could slow down the Tigers though the Lions will need to be able to spread the ground defensively to cover Claremont’s varied options.

Raymond Daniels, Jason Bristow and Brett Mahoney will

be keys to driving the Lions’ attack, with the latter two especially

finding success against the Tigers this year.

WAFC appoints new Subiaco District ChairThe West Australian Football Commission, in partnership with Subiaco, has appointed Cindy Dunham as chair of the Subiaco District Football Development Council to replace long-serving volunteer Wayne Morling.

Dunham is the general manager Operations, Australia West, for Rio Tinto Procurement and has worked in senior procurement roles in the resources industry within WA for the past 12 years. More recently her responsibilities have included procurement planning and execution of Newmont’s $3.3 billion Boddington Gold Mine Project.

WAFC director of game development Warren Nel said the WAFC and Subiaco District were very excited to welcome Dunham aboard and looking forward to the wealth of business knowledge and acumen she would bring to the role of district chair.

“It is fantastic to have a high calibre person such as Cindy take on the role and continue

the excellent Game Development already in progress within the Subiaco District,” Nel said. “I look forward to working with Cindy as we continue to ensure that football offers the best possible experience to our stakeholders.”

Dunham also volunteers her time as vice chairperson on the Board of Shelter WA, which is a peak body that advises the government on affordable housing for low income earners and the disadvantaged.

Nel also paid tribute to outgoing district chairman Wayne Morling for his eight years of loyal service in a key volunteer role which oversaw the implementation of the district model.

“Wayne forged professional relationships with every stakeholder and leaves enormous shoes to fill,” Nel said. “He has passionately and tirelessly served the District at all levels, leading to significant growth and a stronger reputation. His guidance he has ensured that football remains the number one sport of choice within the Subiaco District.”

Prior to Morling’sinvolvement with the Subiaco District Football Development Council, he was involved with the Sorrento Duncraig Junior Football Club as president. During this time he was involved in myriad roles and was instrumental in bringing professionalism to the club and those around him.

“Wayne will not be lost to football, as he will continue to serve on the Subiaco Football Club (WAFL) Board as the Director of Community Programs,” Nel said. “The WAFC and Subiaco District wish Wayne the very best in his future endeavours and thank him for his contribution to the game.”

SEVEN players from WA’s State under-18 Youth Girls team were named in the All Australian side at the completion of the National Championships in Shepparton, Victoria on May 11.

Caitlyn Edwards (East Fremantle), Brianna Green (East Fremantle), Hayley Miller (Joondalup), Kira Phillips (Peel), Ashley Sharp (Swan Districts), Belinda Smith (Claremont) and Emma Swanson (Peel) all received All-Australian honours after starring for WA in their narrow grand final loss against Victoria Metro.

After convincing wins over South Australia, Queensland and NSW/ACT in the qualifying rounds, WA entered the grand final full of confidence and made a strong start to lead by seven points at quarter time.

That lead was reduced to two points at half time and WA paid the price for skill errors and inaccurate kicking in front of goal in the second half, with Victoria Metro building a 12-point lead in the third term and then extending their advantage in the last quarter to claim a hard-fought 15-point win.

Final scores were WA 3.7 (25) defeated by Victoria Metro 6.4 (40).

Kira Phillips was also the leading goalkicker of the competition with 16 majors, the most by any youth girl since the inception of the national championships.

WA’s Kellie Gibson was named the best on ground in the grand final.

Umpires hit the road to visit regions

AFL umpires visited the Lower South West and Peel Regions recently as part of the 2013 AFL Umpires Roadshow.

AFL boundary umpire Callum Brown and AFL Goal umpire Matt Laycock were accompanied by WAFC umpire development manager Glenn Omodei and spent two days visiting local umpiring groups, football clubs, stakeholders and schools.

Omodei said the visit proved highly informative and successful for the local regions and umpires alike.

“Stakeholders were given the opportunity to get a greater understanding of the high demands placed on AFL umpires to perform. The AFL umpires explained their strict fitness and dietary requirements as well as the scrutiny placed on them to get every decision right. They also explained what their coaches are looking for to separate one umpire from another when it comes to the big games and finals,” he said.

“Goal umpire Matt Laycock explained the quick and accurate decision making required for goal umpiring and boundary umpire Callum Brown discussed the elite running required in his role.

“Both of them thoroughly enjoy their umpiring careers and are certainly part of an elite group with only 24 goal and 39 boundary umpires on the AFL list.

“Umpiring careers at the top level can often stretch longer than a player with numerous AFL umpires still officiating at the top level in their 40’s.”

Over and above the specifics of AFL umpiring, the opportunity was given to view the 2013 AFL Laws DVD during the Roadshow, which was a hot topic at the time with many Law and interpretation changes taking place in 2013.

Law changes such as the sliding law, separation of ruckmen at stoppages and holding the ball interpretations generated a lot of discussion and gave the stakeholders an opportunity to understand how the umpires have been instructed to enforce the new laws.

The Umpiring Roadshow is now a permanent fixture of the AFL calendar with AFL field, boundary and goal umpires visiting mainly regional centres.

The Roadshow follows on from the AFL Community Camp concept whereby AFL clubs and players visit regional centres.

The main aim of the Roadshow is to promote umpiring broadly and assist in the recruitment and development of umpires in the local community.

Kulin-Kondinin overcame an improving Narembeen to record a 23-point win and retain top place on the Eastern Districts Football League ladder.

Former West Perth player Simon Duckworth and Aiden Fotheringham were named best for the winners, while Benjamin Gasior with five goals also showed good form. Narembeen’s best were Alexander Bormolini and Benjamin Hunter who chipped in with five goals.

Wesley Curtin making their mark

By Sophie James

THIS weekend the WA Amateur Football League hosts its fi rst general bye for the season, giving all teams the opportunity to refl ect on the fi rst half of the season.

Round seven presented several highly competitive games, finishing with scores which saw an

unexpected change in the ladder for the A Grade competition.

Newly promoted Wesley Curtin have adjusted to the A Grade competition brilliantly and currently hold the top of the ladder after a solid start to the season.

With six wins and just one loss, Wesley Curtin have stamped their dominance in the top grade of the WA Amateur Football League competition, including an impressive win against Maddington by 121 points in round three.

The 2012 B Grade premiers faced off with Whitford last week, and while Wesley Curtin aimed to continue their undefeated streak, Whitford were adamant in securing the four points necessary to get themselves out of the bottom four.

In a similar position, and starting the season strong are 2012 A Grade premiers, University, who have had just two upsets for the season.

Losing only to Wesley Curtin and Maddington, University will use the bye as a chance to re-strategize to see where they faulted in the previous two rounds.

Heading into round eight, the competition will intensify as

teams fight for both points and percentage to reach the top of the ladder, and ultimately qualify for finals.

In the coming round eight, North Beach will host the match of the round against University, and although having the home ground advantage, the game holds no clear favourites.

Currently on equal points, University and North Beach will fight valiantly, with less than two percentage points difference between their current second and third positions.

At the opposite end of the ladder and after seven rounds of football, four points have never been more valuable for Swan Athletic, Mount Lawley and Collegians who sit in eighth, ninth and 10th position respectively.

A highly competitive team in 2012, and finishing third on the ladder, Collegians have struggled to make their mark in 2013 with only four points for the season.

Winning only one game against Trinity Aquinas, Collegians will be looking for the win during their round eight game against Mt Lawley.

Mt Lawley find themselves in a similar position with one win, and one draw and will also be looking to secure the four points from the match against Collegians in round eight.

With hard matches ahead of all teams, the bye will provide the time to reflect on how teams will play in their upcoming games.

Can You Help?In the 69 seasons since open football resumed in 1945, 6063 diff erent players have debuted in WAFL league football. Of these, the WAFC, after extensive research, is missing a date of birth for 245 players. Each week the Budget will list the playing records for 10 of the players for whom birth and other details are sought. These include:

Anthony Aitken (Swan Districts 2000, 1 game) – ex Fitzroy Crossing

Kevin John Crowley (East Fremantle1952, 3 games) – ex Donnybrook

John William Davy (Perth 1960-61, 3 games) – died 1995

Ryan John Dhue (Claremont 1988, 1 game)

Dane Nigel Gorn (South Fremantle1949-1951, 8 games)

William George Moffat (Claremont 1950, 9 games) – died 2011

John Wyllis Murray (Subiaco1953, 1 game) – died 2006

Desmond John Rice (West Perth 1954-57, 16 games) – ex Osborne Park Mets

Kenneth Leslie Seale (East Perth 1951-54, 43 games) – died 1995

Tony Strano (West Perth 1993, 2 games)

Any information that could help establish contact with or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson ([email protected]) or Judy Chalmers (9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission.
