The Red Lobster restaurant chain is moving their corporate headquarters and restaurant support center into the CNL I Office Tower at 450 S. Orange Avenue in Downtown Orlando. As part of their move to Downtown Orlando Red Lobster is developing a corporate identity package for the exterior of the CNL I Office Tower. The CNL I Office Tower is also home to the CNL corporate headquarters so part of the complexity of the Red Lobster identity package is merging it’s corporate identity package with the existing CNL identity signage on the site. The site is within the Downtown Core Special Sign Subdistrict of the Downtown Special Sign District (Section 64.400 of City Code). Signs within this district are exempt from the Section 64.246 requirements which halves maximum copy area of signs located below 30 feet above grade on buildings with high-rise signs. Section 64.246 allows for two high-rise signs that are dif-ferent in appearance to be located on the same building, provided they are on separate sides of the building, and not both visible at the same time from one vantage point. Total square footage for high-rise signs cannot exceed 800 square feet. Currently, there are two CNL high-rise signs on the building, one on the east façade and one on the west façade. Red Lobster has submitted this application to replace the existing CNL high-rise sign on the west façade with the Red Lobster high-rise sign. The sign replacement will be on the architectural “eyebrow.” Full dimensions of the existing CNL sign have not been provided, but it appears to be larger than the proposed Red Lobster sign. Dimensions of the proposed Red Lobster sign are 4’-6” high by 9’-7 3/4” long, for a total area of approximately 43.4 square feet. The eyebrow is approximately 5’-1” in height and 20’ in length. The sign construction will consist of aluminum backs and returns; acrylic face with digital surface print applied; with internal LED illumination. The face will be red with black border. The Downtown Design Guidelines recommend that all text for high-rise signs illuminates white at night, but allows for color illumination to be used for logos. Because the proposed Red Lobster high-rise sign in the company logo it is allowed to glow red at night.

ARB Staff recommends approval of the size, appearance and materials of the Red Lobster high-rise sign with the following con-ditions: 1. The Red Lobster high-rise sign shall be installed in the location and manner proposed. As described in the drawings, the

final height of the sign may differ slightly from the estimated 4’-6” shown based on the height of the existing eyebrow. Staff also supports a final size that may be slightly larger than the eyebrow as well.

2. Any holes or blemishes left from the removal of the CNL sign on the west façade of the building shall be patched and fin-ished to match the surrounding wall finishes prior to installation of the Red Lobster high-rise sign.

3. The existing CNL high-rise sign on the south façade of the building shall be removed to comply with the high-rise sign code that states two differing high-rise signs on the same building shall not be visible from the same vantage point. All holes and remnants of the south façade CNL sign shall be filled and repaired to match the existing building finish.

4. CNL shall be permitted to have one high-rise on the building. That sign shall be located on the east façade of the building and shall be submitted for an ARB Minor Review prior to permitting and installation.

5. ARB approval does not constitute approval to fabricate and install the sign. All required building, sign, structural , and wind load requirements shall be met and all appropriate building and sign permits shall be obtained prior to installation of the Red Lobster sign.
